Book excerpt: George Steinberger (1865-1904) lived a relatively brief life, and during those years he suffered much, as the reader will clearly discern in this book. However, God's grace taught and sustained this thirsty-hearted follower of the Lamb in the midst of many difficulties. Suffering can either make us or break us; Steinberger chose to take the former route. He lived by the truth of 1 Peter 5:10: "But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you." While this is a relatively small volume, it is packed with divine truth, written by a master of the devotional life. The book must be read and reread slowly, allowing the Spirit of God to penetrate one's heart with this biblically-based truth. As Christians, we are exhorted to "imitate the faith" of those worthies who have gone before us (Heb. 13:8). The faith of George Steinberger is worthy to be imitated, as he challenges us to "follow the Lamb wherever He goes (Rev. 14:4).Ole Hallesby, author of the classic volume "Prayer," said about this book: "I know of no devotional book that I have reread so many times. It is to an unusual degree filled with words of eternal life. Book excerpt: How to interpret meteorological measurements made at a given level over a surface with regard to characteristic properties such as roughness, albedo, heat, moisture, carbon dioxide, and other gases is an old question which goes back to the very beginnings of modern micrometeorology. It is made even more challenging when it is unclear whether these measurements are only valid for this point/region and precisely describe the conditions there, or if they are also influenced by surrounding areas. After 50 years of field experiments, it has become both apparent and problematic that meteorological measurements are influenced from surfaces on the windward side. As such, extending these measurements for inhomogeneous experimental sites requires a quantitative understanding of these influences. When combined with atmospheric transport models similar to air pollution models, the ‘footprint’ concept – a fundamental approach introduced roughly 20 years ago – provides us with information on whether or not the condition of upwind site homogeneity is fulfilled. Since these first models, the development of more scientifically based versions, validation experiments and applications has advanced rapidly. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of these developments, to analyze present deficits, to describe applications and to advance this topic at the forefront of micrometeorological research.
