Book excerpt: Foothold in the Heavens, the second volume in the A History of Human Space Exploration series, focuses upon the 1970s, the decade in which humanity established real, longterm foothold in the heavens with the construction and operation of the first space stations. It marked a transitional phase between the heady, race-to-the-Moon days of the Sixties and efforts to make space travel more economical, more frequent and more 'routine.' Space exploration in the Seventies, although dominated by Soviet achievement, saw the first efforts of mankind to really 'live' and work in space, producing results of direct benefit to humans on Earth. The emphasis changed from the gung-ho, 'strap-it-on-and-go' pioneers of the Sixties to the more practical exploitation of space for science, medicine, and technology. This book focuses on each mission launched between April 1971 and April 1981: from the launch of the world's first space station to the end of operations of Salyut 6, and from the expanded, lengthy exploration of the Moon on Apollo 15 to the first flight of the Shuttle.

Book excerpt: Where are the dead? What are they doing? What kind of a process is dying? What relationships exist among the dead themselves, and between the dead and those in the world they have left behind? Modern philosophers argue that the idea of disembodied survival - to which many believers pay lip service - is incoherent, and that there can be evidence neither for nor against something incoherent. By contrast, this book argues, the idea of an embodied survival (albeit a form of embodiment differing from our present embodiment) makes perfect sense in itself and fits much better with the alleged evidence for post-mortem survival. Exploring post-mortem survival, Where are the Dead? uses a variety of empirical data, alongside mythological, legendary and purely fictional material, to illustrate how the less familiar idea of embodied post-mortem survival might actually ’work’ in some real afterlife environment. By asking questions about the nature and whereabouts of the afterlife, and about what it might be like to be dead, the book explores themes nowadays relatively neglected even in disciplines explicitly concerned with ideas about death, dying and life after death.

With immense labor he has gathered together all that previous commentators, ancient and modern, foreign and native, have contributed to the interpretation of these sacred 'memoirs,' and in so far as it is of value has given it a place in his work. Samuel Cox in 'The Expositor' We are happy to call attention to this painstaking and exhaustive work. No student can well do without it. It is a marvelous display of learning and labor. C.H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2Cor.10:3-4 Today, the church has neglected to teach about the spiritual realm, for fear of being judged archaic. It has denied a key Scriptural truth: that the whole world is under the control of Satan. The church has forgotten that angels were created to serve Gods people. It has also rejected the authority Christians have as ambassadors of Christ. Finally, the church has sacrificed its power to impact the world in order to gain credibility with the world. People have chosen the religion of science. Consequently, if science and Scripture disagree, even people within the church believe science to be the truth. There are three main pillars in science: observable, repeatable, and irrefutable. Any scientific fact must fulfill these pillars to be presumed true. Since the spiritual realm is invisible and not observable, science deems that this realm does not exist. When the spiritual realm manifests itself in an event, science excuses the anomaly to be something they have yet to understand. The Scriptures teach that Christians have overcome sin, Satan, and the world. Through the Holy Spirit, we can discern both the spiritual realms presence and its activities. We are not called to be demon-slayers, but we are called to engage the enemy in order to bring freedom and wholeness to people. The Bible teaches that a war exists between Satans kingdom and Gods kingdom. Every war has Rules of Engagement. The purpose of this book is to identify the spiritual realm, recognize its methods of operation, and ultimately learn the rules that enable us to effectively engage our enemy Satan.

Book excerpt: In response to the intellectual movement of New Atheism, this volume articulates a "New Theist" response that has at its core a desire to engage in productive and depolarizing dialogue. To ensure this book is of interest to atheists and theists alike, a team of experts in the field of philosophy of religion offer an assessment of the strongest New Atheist arguments. The chapters address the most pertinent questions about God, including politics and morality, and each essay shows how a reflective theist might deal with points raised by the New Atheists. This volume is a serious academic engagement with the questions asked by New Atheism. As such, it will be of significant interest to scholars working in the philosophy of religion and theology, as well as those engaged in religious studies generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heaven's Wrath explores the religious thought and religious rites of the early Dutch Atlantic world. D. L. Noorlander argues that the Reformed Church and the West India Company forged and maintained a close union, with considerable consequences across the seventeenth century. Dutch merchants, officers, sailors, and soldiers found in their faith an ideology and justification for mercantile and martial activities. The West India Company supported the Reformed Church financially in Europe and helped spread Calvinism to other continents, while Calvinist employees and colonists benefitted from the familiar aspects of religious instruction and public worship. Yet, Noorlander argues, the church-company union also encouraged destructive military operations against Catholic enemies abroad and divisive campaigns against sinners and religious nonconformers in colonial courts. Religious fervor, violence, and intolerance imposed financial and demographic costs that the small Dutch Republic and its people-strapped colonies could not afford. At the same time, the Reformed Church in the Netherlands undermined its own religious mission by trying to control colonial hires, publications, and organization from afar. Noorlander's argument in Heaven's Wrath questions the core assumptions about why the Dutch failed to establish a durable empire in America. He downplays the usual commercial explanations and places the focus instead on the tremendous expenses incurred in the Calvinist-backed war and the Reformed Church's meticulous, worried management of colonial affairs. By pinpointing the issues that hampered the size and import of the Dutch Atlantic world, Noorlander is poised to revise core notions about the organization and aims of the Dutch empire, the culture of the West India Company, and the very shape of Dutch society....
