Book excerpt: After twenty-five years of 'sex, drugs, bad behaviour and haute cuisine', chef and novelist Anthony Bourdain has decided to tell all. From his first oyster in the Gironde to his lowly position as a dishwasher in a honky-tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown; from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop the Rockefeller Center to drug dealers in the East Village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain's tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable, as shocking as they are funny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of Rudyard Kipling's letters, now collected and edited for the first time, continues the story of his life from the end of the Edwardian era through the Great War, a crisis in Kipling's life as well as in that of the world. The years before the war saw the publication of Rewards and Fairies and Songs from Books. In politics, the great issue was Irish home rule and the fate of Ulster. At the outbreak of the war Kipling devoted himself to the struggle. He wrote patriotic verse, made recruiting speeches, and traveled as a correspondent to the French and Italian fronts. He published no new fiction, only what he wrote as correspondent and propagandist: France at War, The Fringes of the Fleet, and The Eyes of Asia. In 1915 his only son, John, was killed in the Battle of Loos; at the same time Kipling began to suffer from the undiagnosed ulcer that would torment him for the rest of his life. His last volume of poems, The Years Between, published in 1919, embodies the suffering and bitterness of these years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dining out used to be considered exceptional; however, the Food Standards Authority reported that in 2014, one meal in six was eaten away from home in Britain. Previously considered a necessary substitute for an inability to obtain a meal in a family home, dining out has become a popular recreational activity for a majority of the population, offering pleasure as well as refreshment. Based on a major mixed-methods research project on dining out in England, this book offers a unique comparison of the social differences between London, Bristol and Preston from 1995 to 2015, charting the dynamic relationship between eating in and eating out. Addressing topics such as the changing domestic divisions of labour around food preparation, the variety of culinary experience for different sections of the population, and class differences in taste and the pleasures and satisfactions associated with dining out, the authors explore how the practice has evolved across the three cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we make choices in an information-saturated world? Prior studies often assume that the problem is coping with the volume of information. They rarely ask how people judge the validity of new information. But we are all forced to depend on secondary sources that no one has the time or resources to verify. In Critics, Ratings, and Society Grant Blank confronts these issues through an investigation of independent evaluations and reviews. Reviews are widespread; they rank products ranging from books and films to automobiles and computers. They are important not just because they influence success and failure of products, they also make or break reputations and careers, and often play a critical role in stratification, power, and status. Reviews are shaped by the interaction of media editors, product makers, and consumers into credible cultural objects. These are processed into two types of rating systems: connoisseurial reviews that depend on the unique skills and experience of a single reviewer, a connoisseur; and procedural reviews that are based on the results of tests, well-defined procedures that allow reviewers to rank groups of similar products. Both rating systems construct hierarchies of products. Blank develops a new theory explaining the circumstances where economic concerns like price are overshadowed by review-constructed hierarchies. When this happens, culture constructs markets. He argues that review-constructed hierarchies are widespread as a consequence of inherent structural characteristics of contemporary capitalism and, as a result, reviews will become more important in the future.

The main character, Jim Arnot, is a computer programmer who works for a company in the state of Maine. After running into some health issues, he decides to take a vacation to Salem, Massachusetts. There, he has an unexpected heart attack and he dreams that he travels back in time to the Salem witch trials of 1692. Shortly thereafter, he realizes Leila was nothing more than the spectra of his imagination, so he turns his attention to Dee Ann Nicewell, the nurse who saves his life. Anyway, as fate would have it, after being smitten by her absolutely stunning beauty, he lives one of the most memorable years of his life until tragedy strikes. An automobile accident takes her life, and when that happens, Jim turns to her sister, Sarah, for support in his time of grief. From there, a deep, everlasting bond is made between them, and that paves the way for a brand new chapter in his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is based on our full Bolivia Adventure Guide, which is 440 pages. It focuses on the area between the two major spines of the Bolivian Andes, the Western Cordillera and the Cordillera Real. This is a dry plain, the world's largest, called the Altiplano. Starting at Lake Titikaka, the Altiplano runs 490 miles/800 km to the south. Some geographers believe that the Altiplano is a dried lake bed and that Lake Titikaka is the shrinking remnants of the ancient lake. Standing at 11,000 ft/3,660 m above the sea, the Altiplano has been cultivated to grow high-altitude crops like potatoes, barley and quinoa. Half of the nation's population lives in the Altiplano, the main theater of Bolivia's history. All of the detailed information you need is here about the hotels, restaurants, shopping, sightseeing. But we also lead you to new discoveries, turning corners you haven't turned before, helping you to interact with the world in new ways. That's what makes our Adventure Guides unique. An excellent addition to the Adventure Guide series, packed with detail, from where to stay and eat, to where to shop for local crafts and how to enjoy historic sites. This guide surveys the wildlife and outdoor opportunities of the country, which range from tropical jungle to high plains deserts. Hiking and viewing opportunities blend with cultural insights. Highly recommended. -- The Midwest Book Review. A country with a smorgasbord of landscapes, Bolivia is a unique destination. Tropical jungles in the Amazon Basin give way to beautiful deserts in the altiplano. The Andes, with four of the world's highest peaks, offer some of the best hiking, climbing and caving on earth. Water covers 14 per cent of the country's territory, including stunning Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Throughout, Bolivia is sprinkled with ruins of pre-Inca civilizations ripe for exploration. Here, Vivien Lougheed shares her passion for Bolivia, telling you about the history, geography, landscape, hidden treasures and top highlights. Comprehensive background information - history, culture, geography and climate - gives you a solid knowledge of each destination and its people. Regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts - it's all here! Detailed regional and town maps feature walking and driving tours. Then come the adventures - fishing, canoeing, hiking, rafting, llama trips and more. Never galloped along a beach on horseback, trekked up a mountain, explored ancient sites? Adventure Guides include extensive lists of recommended outfitters, with all contact details - e-mail, website, phone number and location.

Each chapter offers discussion points, possible assignments, and guided further reading.
