Book excerpt: The focus of Lake Superior to Rainy Lake is the fur trade along Northwestern Ontario's southern margins, the Voyageurs' Highway from Lake Superior to the Manitoba border. Spanning over three centuries ? from the French era to the 21st century ? the book covers such aspects of North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company history as fur trade rivalry and relationships, trade goods and transportation logistics, mixed-blood families and daily life, and the strategic roles of Michipicoten, Fort William and Rainy Lake. It concludes with a brief look at issues facing the fur trade since 1900.The writings of academics and post-graduate students, of professional researchers and keen amateurs are gathered here to honour the 200th anniversary of the founding of Fort William by the North West Company in 1803 and the 30th anniversary of Fort William Historical Park. Culled largely from journals and government files, these articles and reports together make a noteworthy contribution to the literature of theNorthwestern Ontario fur trade.

Book excerpt: People living in the Great Lakes region are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Shifts in seasonal temperatures and precipitation patterns could have dramatic impacts on the economy, ecology, and quality of life. In this illuminating and thorough volume, leading scholars address the challenge of preparing for climate change in the region, where decision makers from various sectors—government, agriculture, recreation, and tourism—must increasingly be aware of the need to incorporate climate change into their short- and long-term planning. The chapters in this revealing book, written by some of the foremost climate change scholars in North America, outline the major trends in the climate of the Great Lakes region, how humans might cope with the uncertainty of climate change impacts, and examples of on-the-ground projects that have addressed these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a 2002 fall walleye index netting (FWIN) project in South Sector 5, Lake of the Woods, Ontario were compared with those from a previous FWIN survey of this sector in 1997. Improvement in the status of sauger and northern pike populations were observed, but walleye abundance, based on a geometric mean catch of 12.6 walleye per lift, remained largely unchanged from 1997. Although the number of mature fish, along with the contribution of older age and size classes, had increased slightly, several factors indicated that this population was still in recovery from past overexploitation.
