Book excerpt: Abstract: A reference text for food and nutrition policy focuses on the role of the US federal food assistance programs and on various emergency food efforts that have been developed to deal with hunger emergencies existing in many US communities. The 4 text chapters cover: the basic aspects of hunger and malnutrition and how federal and private programs are dealing with hunger; a chronological historical review of food programs developed to combat US hunger in the past; evidence for the reoccurrence of hunger in the US; and requisite programmatic and fiscal strategies for combating US hunger in the 1980's. Ancillary data and information are provided in 8 appendices. Personal comments by individuals and organizations concerning US hunger are entered in the margin of each of the pages of the text.

Book excerpt: This book was developed from the papers presented at a symposium on "Water Relationships in Foods," which was held from April 10-14, 1989 at the 197th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Dallas, Texas, under the auspices of the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division of ACS. The editors of this book organized the symposium to bring tagether an es teemed group of internationally respected experts, currently active in the field of water relationships in foods, to discuss recent advances in the 1980's and future trends for the 1990's. It was the hope of all these con tributors that this ACS symposium would become a memorable keystone above the foundation underlying the field of "water in foods. " This strong foundation has been constructed in large part from earlier technical conferences and books such as the four milestone International Symposia on the Properties of Water (ISOPOW I-IV), the recent IFT BasicSymposium on "Water Activity" and Penang meeting on Food Preservation by Maisture Control, as well as the key fundamental contributions from the classic 1980 ACS Symposium Series #127 on Water in Polymers, and from Felix Franks' famous seven-volume Comprehensive Treatise on Water plus five subsequent volumes of the ongoing Water Science Reviews. The objective of the 1989 ACS symposiumwas to build on this foun dation by emphasizing the most recent and maj or advanc.

Book Synopsis Redesigning the Process for Establishing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Redesigning the Process for Establishing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What foods should Americans eat to promote their health, and in what amounts? What is the scientific evidence that supports specific recommendations for dietary intake to reduce the risk of multifactorial chronic disease? These questions are critically important because dietary intake has been recognized to have a role as a key determinant of health. As the primary federal source of consistent, evidence-based information on dietary practices for optimal nutrition, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) have the promise to empower Americans to make informed decisions about what and how much they eat to improve health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The adoption and widespread translation of the DGA requires that they be universally viewed as valid, evidence-based, and free of bias and conflicts of interest to the extent possible. However, this has not routinely been the case. A first short report meant to inform the 2020 review cycle explored how the advisory committee selection process can be improved to provide more transparency, eliminate bias, and include committee members with a range of viewpoints. This second and final report recommends changes to the DGA process to reduce and manage sources of bias and conflicts of interest, improve timely opportunities for engagement by all interested parties, enhance transparency, and strengthen the science base of the process.

Book Synopsis Feeding Children by : United States. Congressional Budget Office
Download or read book Feeding Children written by United States. Congressional Budget Office and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Child nutrition programs have been increasingly supported by the federal government, but the recent concerns about inflation and government expenditures have necessitated a thorough program review, including costs, purposes, nutritional effectiveness, resource allocation and available alternatives. There are currently 10 programs under scrutiny, including WIC, breakfast, lunch and summer meal programs, commodity supplements and nutrition education, which are funded by reimbursements as if they were entitlements. Existing policies at state, local, and federal levels are examined as well as the anticipated impact of changing policy and funding. Each program is analyzed according to target population, type of benefit, number of participants, and costs. The commodity program is examined from 2 aspects: the impact of expenditures on agriculture and the impact of food programs on child health. These analyses are supported with statistical data on diet analysis, technical tables and food distribution authorization legislation.
Book Synopsis Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A handbook for policy makers and program analysts describes a prototype inventory of US federal food, agriculture, and nutrition programs, and how this prototype inventory can be used to analyze data across program, functional, and organizational lines. This handbook does not represent an all-inclusive inventory of all food, agriculture, and nutrition programs, but is rather intended as an example for executive branch agencies to use in building similar program inventories in their areas and for building a government-wide program inventory. The inventory contains data on 359 federal programs in 28 different US departments and agencies. This handbook describes the inventory and what information it contains, some related information systems, and identifies future opportunities for further developing this and other program inventories.
