Book excerpt: This new biography of Maurice Ravel (1875–1937), by one of the leading scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French music, is based on a wealth of written and oral evidence, some newly translated and some derived from interviews with the composer’s friends and associates. As well as describing the circumstances in which Ravel composed, the book explores new evidence to present radical views of the composer’s background and upbringing, his notorious failure in the Prix de Rome, his incisive and often combative character, his sexual preferences, and his long final illness. It also contains the most detailed account so far published of his hugely successful American tour of 1928. The world of Maurice Ravel—including friendships (and some fallings-out) with Debussy, Faur, Diaghilev, Gershwin, and Toscanini—is deftly uncovered in this sensitive portrait.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Ravel, as composer and scenario writer, collaborated with some of the greatest ballet directors, choreographers, designers and dancers of his time, including Diaghilev, Ida Rubinstein, Benois and Nijinsky. In this book, the first study dedicated to Ravel's ballets, Deborah Mawer explores these relationships and argues that ballet music should not be regarded in isolation from its associated arts. Indeed, Ravel's views on ballet and other stage works privilege a synthesized aesthetic. The first chapter establishes a historical and critical context for Ravel's scores, engaging en route with multimedia theory. Six main ballets from Daphnis et Chlo?hrough to Bol? are considered holistically alongside themes such as childhood fantasy, waltzing and neoclassicism. Each work is examined in terms of its evolution, premiere, critical reception and reinterpretation through to the present; new findings result from primary-source research, undertaken especially in Paris. The final chapter discusses the reasons for Ravel's collaborations and the strengths and weaknesses of his interpersonal relations. Mawer emphasizes the importance of the performative dimension in realizing Ravel's achievement, and proposes that the composer's large-scale oeuvre can, in a sense, be viewed as a balletic undertaking. In so doing, this book adds significantly to current research interest in artistic production and interplay in early twentieth-century Paris.

Book excerpt: Maurice Ravel: A Life is the first convincing attempt to paint a portrait of the life and work of the hitherto enigmatic composer of Bolero, Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and L'enfant Et Les Sortileges. Ivry offers here a convincing solution to the much-discussed "mystery" of Ravel's sexuality. More than simply "outing" Ravel as a gay man for the first time among numerous writers on this composer, this book discusses how his secretive sexuality impacted his work. Using unpublished documents, letters, articles and memoirs, many of which were previously unknown even to Arbie Orenstein, universally considered the world's leading scholar of Ravel studies, Ivry presents a more rounded view of Ravel, man and musician. Descriptions of musical works are in non-technical language, friendly to the reader with no specialized knowledge of classical music. Like Ivry's widely acclaimed biography of Poulenc, universally seen as the standard life of this composer in any language, his new Ravel is likely to become a classic of contemporary musical biography.

Book excerpt: "This biography of Maurice Ravel is the result of several years' penetrating research, not only on the influences and meanings of Ravel's particular genius, but on the carefully guarded personal life of the great French musician. It is the only study of the modern French master available in English. Although born in the Basque village of Ciboure near the border of Spain, Ravel was raised in the Montmartre district of Paris and became the epitome of the sophisticated, elegant Parisian. He was a fastidious and sartorially resplendent little man (he was but five feet tall) who, aside from his music, delighted in children, in Parisian night life, and in travels to Spain, Africa, England, and the United States. But Ravel the composer studied and worked and developed as though oblivious of the ferment his 'division of the laws of harmony' caused. A mild man, he nevertheless perpetrated violent reactions and caused three famous affaires Ravel. The first was his unfair exclusion from the Prix de Rome contest. The second, the celebrated newspaper controversy of Ravel and Debussy, is available here in book form for the first time. Ravel's third affaire was his sensational refusal of the Légion d'Honneur. Ravel's undeniable gifts as a musical innovator were inspired by his teachers, Fauré and Satie, and developed during one of the most artistically productive and revolutionary periods of the twentieth century. Compared to many composers, Ravel's musical output was small. He was an extremely careful and painstaking worker, but his working habits did not curb his own inventiveness nor affect his infinite versatility. A list of Ravel's compositions is both distinguished and varied, ranging from small pieces for the piano (Pavane pour une Infante défunte, the three pieces that comprise the Gaspard de la Nuit) to piano concertos (one of the two being the miraculous Concerto for the Left Hand Alone); art songs (in the Spanish, Hebraic, Greek, Russian, Italian, Scottish, and Madagascan manners); music for the theater (Daphnis et Chloë, La Valse, Boléro); orchestrations (Schumann's Carnaval, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition); and chamber music (one trio, one quartet)." --Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: ""There is probably no one in the gallery of modern composers who is more of a key figure than Maurice Ravel," writes H. H. Stuckenschmidt, the noted German critic, who has here devoted all his energies to this much revered but enigmatic giant of French music. Ravel was a composer of exquisite taste and with a complementary ability to execute his ideas. In his private life he exercised some of this same meticulousness, with the result that there has never been enough information to take the curious music-lover much beyond surface knowledge of his character and temperament. Ravel, the man of Paris, the musical spokesman for the period during which he produced his greatest works (1890 to 1932) is shown by Stuckenschmidt to be a product of two contrasting elements in his heritage: the precision and clock-like exactness that came from his Swiss father and the warmth and sensuality that were the gifts of his Basque mother. Stuckenschmidt develops this theme with great skill, offering it as the key insight into both the composer's life and his creative efforts. The author does not scant analysis, however, and he supplies detailed descriptions of all the great works: L'Heure Espagnole, Gaspard de la Nuit, Daphnis and Chloë, La Valse, Bolero, the piano concerti, and many others." --
