Countless spirits remain between Whitefish Point and Point Iroquois in an area well known for its many tragic shipwrecks. Download or read book Cockeyed Happy written by Darla Worden and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Streamlined and impacting, Darla Worden's Cockeyed Happy could be construed as a narrative of the author himself, a compelling account of Hemingway's summers in Wyoming—and I can think of no finer compliment."—Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries In March 1928, after the phenomenal success of The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway returned to the United States with his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer—the stylish Vogue editor and scorned "other woman" who would give up everything to be with him and, in the end, lose it all. The couple fled Paris in the wake of the huge gossip storm about the American author's affair and abandonment of his wife and son. Escaping to Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains to write while Pauline recovered from the birth of their first child, he finished A Farewell to Arms and fell in love with the land around him. Pauline soon joined him in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. In Cockeyed Happy Darla Worden tells the little-known story of Hemingway and Pauline during six summers from 1928 to 1939—from smitten newlywed to bored, restless husband and ultimately to philanderer as he falls in love with another woman once again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the life and work of one of the most significant and notorious American writers of the 20th century. Ernest Hemingway's literary status alone makes him worthy of a biography. In addition, his life reads like a suspense story--it's full of action, romance, heartbreak, machismo, mishaps, celebrity, and tragedy. He had first-hand experience of several historic events of the last century, and he rubbed elbows with many other notable writers and intellectual greats of our time. Though his reputation has weathered ups and downs, his status as an American icon remains untouchable. Here, in the only biography available to young people, Catherine Reef introduces readers to Hemingway's work, with a focus on his themes and writing styles and his place in the history of American fiction, and examines writers who influenced him and those he later influenced.

Book Synopsis Ernest Hemingway by : James M. Hutchisson
Download or read book Ernest Hemingway written by James M. Hutchisson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many, the life of Ernest Hemingway has taken on mythic proportions. From his romantic entanglements to his legendary bravado, the elements of Papa’s persona have fascinated readers, turning Hemingway into such an outsized figure that it is almost impossible to imagine him as a real person. James Hutchisson’s biography reclaims Hemingway from the sensationalism, revealing the life of a man who was often bookish and introverted, an outdoor enthusiast who revered the natural world, and a generous spirit with an enviable work ethic. This is an examination of the writer through a new lens—one that more accurately captures Hemingway’s virtues as well as his flaws. Hutchisson situates Hemingway’s life and art in the defining contexts of the women he loved and lost, the places he held dear, and the specter of mental illness that haunted his family. This balanced portrait examines for the first time in full detail the legendary writer’s complex medical history and his struggle against clinical depression. The first major biography of Hemingway in over twenty years, this monumental achievement provides readers with a fresh, comprehensive look at one of the most acclaimed authors of the twentieth century.

This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway (ヘミングウェイ) is a giant among 20th-century American authors. Even during his own time, he had a cult following. His many books, The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Snows of Kilimanjaro remain well-loved classics to this day. In 1954 Hemmingway won the Nobel Prize for literature in recognition of his talent. “Papa” Hemingway possessed a bright personality and traveled incessantly. He handwrote his manuscripts in pencil and on a “good” day he could write seven pencils down to their nubs while standing in one place; moving only to shift his body weight from one foot to the other. A tragic figure, he suffered from numerous maladies and injuries throughout his life: anthrax, malaria, amoebic dysentery, pneumonia, skin cancer, hepatitis, and diabetes amongst them. Additionally, he experienced ruptured internal organs (kidneys, spleen, and liver), a cracked vertebra, and a fractured skull. His passions were three: literature, alcohol, and fishing. Among his favorite books, Hemingway listed Flaber’s Madam Bovary, Stendhal’s The Red and the Black, Joyce’s Dubliners, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, and Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov as must-reads for all. Book Synopsis Facing the Crises by : Ljubica Matek
Download or read book Facing the Crises written by Ljubica Matek and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the diverse research interests of the contributors, this collection of essays offers a varied picture of the current approaches to Anglo-American literature and culture, and points to the need for a deeper understanding of current cultural, economic and social processes in the globalizing and globalized culture of the West. Because “crisis” seems to be the key word of contemporary Western culture, the first part of the book, titled “In the Face of Crises”, explores the implicit or explicit idea of a crisis between the real and the simulated, suggesting that one of the major issues for the contemporary man is how to deal with the virtual or with the “absence of the real”. Our fast-paced, technology-laden and materialist-oriented existence brings about the need to rethink our human identity, putting into perspective our relationship to technology, the impact of capitalist economy and colonial past, as well as consequences of constant warfare. The second part of the book, “New Perspectives on Literary Genres”, analyzes forms, topics and styles in literary texts belonging to specific, sometimes marginalized, genres. Literary analyses in this section also touch upon the idea of crisis: be it the crisis of understanding and redefining a particular genre, or a crisis that is inherent in the controversial topic or form of the text. As a reaction to recent allegations concerning the crisis of humanities as “non-profitable”, this book shows that humanist research is indispensable and crucial for understanding the human condition, making this book a relevant addition to the contemporary discussion of literature and culture.
Book Synopsis Re-Covering Modernism by : David M Earle
Download or read book Re-Covering Modernism written by David M Earle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the twentieth century, modernist works appeared not only in obscure little magazines and books published by tiny exclusive presses but also in literary reprint magazines of the 1920s, tawdry pulp magazines of the 1930s, and lurid paperbacks of the 1940s. In his nuanced exploration of the publishing and marketing of modernist works, David M. Earle questions how and why modernist literature came to be viewed as the exclusive purview of a cultural elite given its availability in such popular forums. As he examines sensational and popular manifestations of modernism, as well as their reception by critics and readers, Earle provides a methodology for reconciling formerly separate or contradictory materialist, cultural, visual, and modernist approaches to avant-garde literature. Central to Earle's innovative approach is his consideration of the physical aspects of the books and magazines - covers, dust wrappers, illustrations, cost - which become texts in their own right. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, Earle's study shows that modernism emerged in a publishing ecosystem that was both richer and more complex than has been previously documented.
