Book excerpt: Collaborative information services on Web 2.0 are used by Internet users to produce digital information resources, and to furnish the contents of the resources with their own keywords, so-called tags. This book deals with collaborative information services and folksonomies as a method of representing knowledge and a tool for information retrieval. Collaborative information services on Web 2.0 are used by Internet users not only to produce digital information resources, but also to furnish the contents of the resources with their own keywords, so-called tags. Whilst doing so the user is not required to comply with rules, as is necessary with a library catalogue. The amount of user-generated tags in a collaborative information service is referred to as folksonomy. Folksonomies allow users to relocate their own resources and to search for other resources. This book deals with collaborative information services and folksonomies both as a method of representing knowledge and a tool for information retrieval.
Book Synopsis Folksonomies. Indexing and Retrieval in Web 2.0 by : Isabella Peters
Download or read book Folksonomies. Indexing and Retrieval in Web 2.0 written by Isabella Peters and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-23 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Web 2.0 users not only make heavy use of Col-laborative Information Services in order to create, publish and share digital information resources - what is more, they index and represent these re-sources via own keywords, so-called tags. The sum of this user-generated metadata of a Collaborative Information Service is also called Folksonomy. In contrast to professionally created and highly struc-tured metadata, e.g. subject headings, thesauri, clas-sification systems or ontologies, which are applied in libraries, corporate information architectures or commercial databases and which were developed according to defined standards, tags can be freely chosen by users and attached to any information resource. As one type of metadata Folksonomies provide access to information resources and serve users as retrieval tool in order to retrieve own re-sources as well as to find data of other users. The book delivers insights into typical applications of Folksonomies, especially within Collaborative Information Services, and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of Folksonomies as tools of knowl-edge representation and information retrieval. More-over, it aims at providing conceptual considerations for solving problems of Folksonomies and presents how established methods of knowledge representa-tion and models of information retrieval can successfully be transferred to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with information is one of the vital skills in the 21st century. It takes a fair degree of information savvy to create, represent and supply information as well as to search for and retrieve relevant knowledge. How does information (documents, pieces of knowledge) have to be organized in order to be retrievable? What role does metadata play? What are search engines on the Web, or in corporate intranets, and how do they work? How must one deal with natural language processing and tools of knowledge organization, such as thesauri, classification systems, and ontologies? How useful is social tagging? How valuable are intellectually created abstracts and automatically prepared extracts? Which empirical methods allow for user research and which for the evaluation of information systems? This Handbook is a basic work of information science, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of information retrieval and knowledge representation. It addresses readers from all professions and scientific disciplines, but particularly scholars, practitioners and students of Information Science, Library Science, Computer Science, Information Management, and Knowledge Management. This Handbook is a suitable reference work for Public and Academic Libraries.

Book Synopsis Concepts and Methods for a Librarian of the Web by : Mario Kubek
Download or read book Concepts and Methods for a Librarian of the Web written by Mario Kubek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Wide Web can be considered a huge library that in consequence needs a capable librarian responsible for the classification and retrieval of documents as well as the mediation between library resources and users. Based on this idea, the concept of the “Librarian of the Web” is introduced which comprises novel, librarian-inspired methods and technical solutions to decentrally search for text documents in the web using peer-to-peer technology. The concept’s implementation in the form of an interactive peer-to-peer client, called “WebEngine”, is elaborated on in detail. This software extends and interconnects common web servers creating a fully integrated, decentralised and self-organising web search system on top of the existing web structure. Thus, the web is turned into its own powerful search engine without the need for any central authority. This book is intended for researchers and practitioners having a solid background in the fields of Information Retrieval and Web Mining.

Book Synopsis The Two Revolutions by : Avery Dame-Griff
Download or read book The Two Revolutions written by Avery Dame-Griff and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internet origins of the American transgender movement The Two Revolutions explores how the rise of the internet shaped transgender identity and activism from the 1980s to the present. Through extensive archival research and media archeology, Avery Dame-Griff reconstructs the manifold digital networks of transgender activists, cross-dressing computer hobbyists, and others interested in gender nonconformity who incited the second revolution of the title: the ascendance of “transgender” as an umbrella identity in the mid-1990s. Dame-Griff argues that digital communications sparked significant momentum within what would become the transgender movement, but also further cemented existing power structures. Covering both a historical period that is largely neglected within the history of computing, and the poorly understood role of technology in queer and trans social movements, The Two Revolutions offers a new understanding of both revolutions—the internet’s early development and the structures of communication that would take us to today’s tipping point of trans visibility politics. Through a history of how trans people online exploited different digital infrastructures in the early days of the internet to build a community, The Two Revolutions tells a crucial part of trans history itself.

Book Synopsis Competence Management for Open Innovation by : Joachim Hafkesbrink
Download or read book Competence Management for Open Innovation written by Joachim Hafkesbrink and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2010 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medium and small sized enterprises are increasingly reliant on innovation to be successful. A new paradigm to exploit joint forces for creating innovative products and services is Open Innovation, in which companies open specific phases of their innovation process to collaboration with others in order to profit from novel ideas, or alternative external paths to market. Especially in the field of the digital economy, which is highly innovation-driven, successful examples of value-creating open partnerships can be found: customers, researchers or partners join the innovation process, and thus may complement a necessary competency portfolio that a single company may be unable to provide. Managing and facilitating Open Innovation processes does, however, require appropriate competencies and experiences. In that regard, support in terms of infrastructure and analytical frameworks can be very helpful and even necessary. This book includes theories, tools and support mechanisms that were presented at the International Symposium on Support for Open Innovation processes. Researchers and practitioners active in the field of Open Innovation describe their experiences and ideas in this area. The first part of the book elucidates several approaches to support the management of Open Innovation processes. Special attention is given to the topics of competence development and management, awareness and the reputation of Open Innovation community members, and the implementation of the Open Innovation paradigm in enterprises. Furthermore, social software based services to foster and facilitate the Open Innovation process are proposed. The second part of the book focuses on case studies in Open Innovation conducted within SMEs in the digital economy sector. Three case studies - on Web 2.0 learning, Open Source Innovation and Virtual Worlds platforms - are introduced and analysed with theoretical frameworks that are described in the first part of the book.
