This book was released on 1980 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flutter analysis is performed for a MBB A-3 supercritical airfoil at transonic Mach numbers. Two degrees of freedom, pitching and plunging, are considered. The unsteady aerodynamic data are obtained by using two separate transonic aerodynamic computational codes: (1) LTRAN2 based on the time integration method and (2) STRANS2 and UTRANS2 based on the harmonic analysis method. The steady aerodynamic results are shown in the form of upper and lower surface pressure curves. The unsteady aerodynamic coefficients are obtained and tabulated for various values of low reduced frequency by pitching the MBB A-3 airfoil about the quarter chord axis. For the case of zero mean angle of attack, the coefficients obtained by the two computer codes are directly compared and discussed. At design Mach number of 0.765 and zero mean angle of attack, flutter results are obtained by both methods and compared. They are presented as plots of flutter speed and the corresponding reduced frequency vs. one of the four parameters: airfoil - air mass ratio; position of mass center; position of elastic axis; and plunge-to-pitch frequency ratio.

Book excerpt: Flutter analyses at transonic Mach numbers are performed for three supercritical airfoils: (1) MBB A-3; (2) CAST 7; and (3) TF-8A wing section at the 65.3% semispan station. For all airfoils, two degrees of freedom, pitching and plunging, are considered. The unsteady aerodynamic coefficients are obtained for various values of low reduced frequencies by pitching the airfoils about the quarter chord axis. Unsteady results are presented as plots of unsteady coefficients versus angle of attack for the MBB A-3 airfoil and versus Mach number for the CAST 7 and TF-8A airfoils.

Book excerpt: Flutter analyses are performed for an NACA 64A006 and an NACA 64A010 airfoil by simultaneously using two transonic aerodynamic computational codes: (1) STRANS2 and UTRANS2 based on the relaxation method and (2) LTRAN2 based on the indicial and time-integration methods. Flutter results are obtained as plots of flutter speeds and the corresponding reduced frequencies versus one of the four parameters; airfoil-air mass ratio; position of the mass center; position of the elastic axis; and free stream Mach number. On each figure, several sets of curves for different values of plunge-to-pitch frequency ratios are shown simultaneously. The flutter results obtained by using relaxation and the indicial methods are, in general, in good agreement. The present flutter results for a special case of a thin parabolic airfoil at a low transonic Mach number of 0.7 compare favorably with that obtained by using linear flat plate theory. The trend of each flutter curve and the effect of each parameter are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: A systematic analytical procedure has been developed for computing flutter characteristics of rectangular panels with stream-aligned side edges, based on air forces from three-dimensional linearized supersonic unsteady potential flow. The procedure has particular usefulness in the low supersonic speed range where static and quasi-static aerodynamic approximations are considered to be least valid and can provide bases of comparison for some of the simpler types of analysis. The panel is considered to be finely divided into many boxes, and the aerodynamic influence coefficients between all pairs of boxes are obtained by numerical integration. The flutter analysis is a modal type, which readily coordinates with the aerodynamic box method, and can be used for calculating the flutter stability of any flat or nearly flat panel, whether of isotropic or anisotropic stiffness, and of buckled panels for which the flutter is a small-amplitude, simple harmonic, superimposed motion to which linear theory is applicable. A number of results are presented for flat unstressed, isotropic panels with simply supported edges and with clamped edges. For clamped-edge aluminum panels with length-width ratio of 2 at sea level, the panel flutter parameters are tabulated for eight Mach numbers ranging from 1.02 to 2.0. For Mach 1.3, fluter boundaries are plotted for length-width ratios from 0 to 10 for simply supported edges and from 0 to 4 for clamped edges so that design values can be read for a wide range of panel materials and air densities. Appendix A delineates the way in which the natural mode characteristics were developed for calculating the presented flutter results without the need for double-precision arithmetic. Appendix B provides formulas for conversion among a number of types of flutter solution parameters in current use. Appendix C describes a way to economize computer time for the large matrix multiplication required.

Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with a discussion of some of the problems of flutter and aeroelasticity that are or may be important at high speeds. Various theoretical procedures for treating high Mach number flutter are reviewed. Application of two of these methods, namely, the Van Dyke method and piston-theory method, is made to a specific example and compared with linear two- and three-dimensional results. It is shown that the effects of thickness and airfoil shape are destabilizing as compared with linear theory at high Mach number. In order to demonstrate the validity of these large predicted effects, experimental flutter results are shown for two rectangular wings at Mach numbers of 6.86 and 3. The results of nonlinear piston-theory calculations were in good agreement with experiment, whereas the results of using two- and three-dimensional linear theory were not. In addition, some results demonstrating the importance of including camber modes in a flutter analysis are shown, as well as a discussion of one case of flutter due to aerodynamic heating.

A previously developed unsteady panel code for single airfoil bending torsion flutter analysis was compared to Theodorsen's classical theory. The panel code agrees with Theodorsen's bending-torsion flutter analysis for natural frequency ratios (Omega sub h/Omega sub alpha) less than 1.2. Also, a two airfoil unsteady panel code was modified for one degree of freedom flutter analysis. Code verification was completed by first comparing flat plate theory to the unsteady aerodynamic force and moment coefficients and then using the equation of motion to determine regions of instability. The possibility of active flutter control was investigated by positioning a small control airfoil in front of a neutrally stable reference airfoil. Results show that the flutter boundary may be changed through the placement, oscillation or scaling of a second airfoil upstream. A comparison with pitch damping curves published by Loewy confirms that the code is capable of predicting wake-induced airfoil flutter.
