Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Alone in the World? -- first given as the 2004 Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh -- J. Wentzel van Huyssteen develops the interdisciplinary dialogue that he set out in The Shaping of Rationality (1999), applying this methodology to the uncharted waters between theological anthropology and paleoanthropology. Among other things, van Huyssteen argues that scientific notions of human uniqueness help us to ground theological notions of human distinctiveness in flesh-and-blood, embodied experiences and protect us from overly complex theological abstractions regarding the "image of God." Focusing on the interdisciplinary problem of human origins and distinctiveness, van Huyssteen accesses the origins of the embodied human mind through the spectacular prehistoric cave paintings of western Europe, fifteen of which are reproduced in color in this volume. Boldly connecting the widely separated fields of Christian theology and paleoanthropology through careful interdisciplinary reflection, Alone in the World? will encourage sustained investigation into the question of human uniqueness.

Book excerpt: This book formulates a nomiotic-wave theory of the mind grounded in six fundamental aspects: 1) the mind is different from the brain as a whole because its processes directly involve the neocortex; 2) the mind generates significant processes and configurations; 3) the mind possesses an architecture and works with operational modalities; 4) the mental processes work with the transmission of informational waves; 5) the mind consists of several minds or mental units that operate independently or in synergy with each other in a parallel and syntotic way; and 6) the mind possesses a logic that is called inherent logic. Chapter One introduces the concept of monist dualism, while Chapter Two explores the differences between brain processes and configurations and mind processes and configurations. Chapter Three presents the nomiotic theory of the mind, the fundamental characteristic of which is the generation and processing of significances (nomiosis). Chapters Four and Five take into consideration the architecture of the mind and the formation of mental structures that are called nomiotic or bearers of significances (nosemes, menemes, propagemes and noograms), and introduce inherent logic. Chapters Six to Nine analyse various topics that complete the nomiotic-wave theory of the mind, including awareness, mind-body relations, history of the mind, other minds, and the relations between the mind and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things threaten the faith of youth today, but none more than science. The commitments of science and Christianity seem to be at odds—science makes truth claims based on experiments and proofs, while religion asks for belief and trust. But Andrew Root demonstrates that, in fact, the two are not incompatible. Root, a renowned expert on adolescent spirituality, shows how science overstates its claims on truth, while faith often understates its own claims. Both faith and science frame the experience and reality of teenagers, and both have something valuable to offer as adolescents develop. Drawing on a fictional account of a youth pastor and the various students he encounters, Root paints a compelling picture of how faith can flourish, even in our scientific age.

Book excerpt: In her study of eighteenth-century literature and medical treatises, Mary McAlpin takes up the widespread belief among cultural philosophers of the French Enlightenment that society was gravely endangered by the effects of hyper-civilization. McAlpin's study explores a strong thread in this rhetoric of decline: the belief that premature puberty in young urban girls, supposedly brought on by their exposure to lascivious images, titillating novels, and lewd conversations, was the source of an increasing moral and physical degeneration. In how-to hygiene books intended for parents, the medical community declared that the only cure for this obviously involuntary departure from the "natural" path of sexual development was the increased surveillance of young girls. As these treatises by vitalist and vitalist-inspired physiologists became increasingly common in the 1760s, McAlpin shows, so, too, did the presence of young, vulnerable, and virginal heroines in the era's novels. Analyzing novels by, among others, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot, and Choderlos de Laclos, she offers physiologically based readings of many of the period's most famous heroines within the context of an eighteenth-century discourse on women and heterosexual desire that broke with earlier periods in recasting female and male desire as qualitatively distinct. Her study persuasively argues that the Western view of women's sexuality as a mysterious, nebulous force-Freud's "dark continent"-has its secular origins in the mid-eighteenth century.
