Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Physics - Mechanics, , language: English, abstract: In this study, numerical simulations of a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor involving a two-fluid Eulerian multiphase model and incorporating the Kinetic Theory of Granular Flow (KTGF) for the solids phase have been performed using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The fluidized bed setup consists of 1,5 m height and 0,2 m diameter in which a series of experiments were performed using Helium tracer to determine the Residence Time Distribution (RTD) at various normalized velocities i.e., with different degrees of gas-solids mixing. Both 2D and 3D simulations of the fluidized bed reactor are performed. The main purpose of this study is to understand the hydrodynamic behavior of a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor through a framework of Eulerian multiphase model and to analyze hydrodynamic behavior of the gas-solids mixing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fluidized-bed reactor is the centerpiece of industrial fluidization processes. This book focuses on the design and operation of fluidized beds in many different industrial processes, emphasizing the rationale for choosing fluidized beds for each particular process. The book starts with a brief history of fluidization from its inception in the 1940’s. The authors present both the fluid dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds and the extensive experimental studies of operating systems and they set them in the context of operating processes that use fluid-bed reactors. Chemical engineering students and postdocs as well as practicing engineers will find great interest in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful as a reference for engineers in industry and as an advanced level text for graduate engineering students, Multiphase Flow and Fluidization takes the reader beyond the theoretical to demonstrate how multiphase flow equations can be used to provide applied, practical, predictive solutions to industrial fluidization problems. Written to help advance progress in the emerging science of multiphase flow, this book begins with the development of the conservation laws and moves on through kinetic theory, clarifying many physical concepts (such as particulate viscosity and solids pressure) and introducing the new dependent variable--the volume fraction of the dispersed phase. Exercises at the end of each chapterare provided for further study and lead into applications not covered in the text itself. Treats fluidization as a branch of transport phenomena Demonstrates how to do transient, multidimensional simulation of multiphase processes The first book to apply kinetic theory to flow of particulates Is the only book to discuss numerical stability of multiphase equations and whether or not such equations are well-posed Explains the origin of bubbles and the concept of critical granular flow Presents clearly written exercises at the end of each chapter to facilitate understanding and further study

Book excerpt: An in-depth experimental study of the fluid dynamics of turbulent fluidized beds with particles of Geldart’s Group B was carried out. For this purpose, fluidization behavior was investigated in different fluidized bed plants having diameters in the range of 0.05 m to 1 m. Pressure fluctuation analysis has been used as an identification tool for the turbulent fluidized bed regime. Different fluidization conditions have been investigated by variation of the fluidized bed properties, the bed material properties, and the gas properties. Based on the measured data, a correlation predicting the transition velocity from bubbling to turbulent fluidization is introduced. To investigate the local flow structure, capacitance probe measurements have been carried out. Using this measurement technique, local solids concentrations and properties of rising bubbles have been determined and analyzed. Finally, an empiric fluid dynamic model was developed using the local measurement data. It is mainly based on capacitance probe measurements and shows high accuracy in comparison to pressure data.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive mechanistic interpretation of the transport phenomena involved in various basic modes of gas-liquid-solid fluidization. These modes include, for example, those for three-phase fluidized beds, slurry columns, turbulent contact absorbers, and three-phase fluidized beds, slurry columns, turbulent contact absorbers, and three-phase transport. It summarizes the empirical correlations useful for predicting transport properties for each mode of of operation.Gas-Liquid-Solid Fluidization Engineering provides a comprehensive account of the state-of-the-art applications of the three-phase fluidization systems that are important in both small-and large-scale operations. These applications include fermentation, biological wastewater treatment, flue gas desulfurization and particulates removal, and resid hydrotreating. This book highlights the industrial implications of these applications. In addition, it discusses information gaps and future directions forresearch in this field.

Book excerpt: Fluidization Dynamics has been written for students and engineers who find themselves involved with problems concerning the fluidized state. It presents an analysis that focuses directly on the problem of predicting the fluid dynamic behaviour of a proposed fluidized system for which empirical data is limited or unavailable. The second objective is to provide a treatment of fluidization dynamics that is readily accessible to the non-specialist. The linear approach adopted in this book, starting with the formulation of predictive expressions for the basic forces that act on a fluidized particle, offers a clear way into the theory. The incorporation of the force terms into the conservation equations for mass and momentum and subsequent applications are presented in a manner that requires only the haziest recollection of elementary fluid-dynamics theory. The analyses presented in this book represent a body of research that has appeared in numerous publications over the last 20 years. L.G. Gibilaro has taken the opportunity to reorder much of the material in the light of subsequent knowledge, to correct minor errors and inconsistencies and to add detail and clarification where necessary. This material helps to form the basis for university course modules in engineering and applied science at undergraduate and graduate level, as well as focused, post-experienced courses for the process, and allied industries. · Bridges the gulf between observed behaviour and fluid-dynamic theory· Clear account of basic theory of fluidization· Accessible treatment of fluidization analysis
