It is man's love of loveliness carried to excess man's craving for the ideal grown to a fine lunacy. It is piquant won derment; culminated beauty that, for all its combination of telling and select items, can still contrive to look natural, debonair, native to its place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers and the Flower Garden: With Instructions on the Culture of Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, &C One great merit in horticulture is, that it confines itself to no rank, and that it may form the amusement or the pursuit alike of great and small, rich and poor; only, the kind of garden we choose, what we do with the land which we have at command, must depend on those extraneous circumstances to which we all have to submit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower Garden, or Chapters on Flowers: A Sequel to Floral Biography This habit may be unconsciously acquired while life itself is but a gay garden of sweets, and the secret language of inexperienced confidence is, I shall see no sorrow: but it needs somewhat more than a sip of the bitters mingled for God's children in this mor tal state to excite a relish for the mysterious sweetness thus reserved to qualify the unpalatable draught. God has given us richly all things to enjoy: the worldling' may possess, but the Christian alone can enjoy these gifts. And as through the merely me chanical arrangement of types and paper, ink and pasteboard, into certain forms, a book is produced which shall contain a correct transcript of the reveal ed word, and become, under divine operation, the means of bringing life eternal within the grasp of its readers, so on many an inanimate object, formed, like our. Many - perhaps too partial - friends have urged me to reprint this article. They have reminded me that, when the immediate circulation of any one number of a Review has ceased, its articles are virtually lost and buried, and they assure me that there are readers who may not have already seen, and who would yet care to read, this Essay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour in the Flower Garden I am strongly of opinion that the possession of a quantity of plants, however good the plants may be themselves and however ample their number, does not make a garden it only makes a collection. Having got the plants, the great thing is to use them with careful selection and definite intention. Merely having them, or having them planted unassorted in garden. Spaces, is only like having a box of paints from the best colourman, or, to go one step further, it is like having portions of these paints set out upon a palette. This does not constitute a picture; and it seems to me that the duty we owe to our gardens and to our own bettering in our gardens is so to use the plants that they shall form beautiful pictures; and that, while delighting our eyes, they should be always training those eyes to a more exalted criticism to a state of mind and artistic conscience that will not tolerate bad or careless combination or any sort of misuse of plants, but in which it becomes a point of honour to be always striving for the best. It is just in the way it is done that lies the whole difference between commonplace gardening and gar dening that may rightly claim to rank as a fine art. Given the same space of ground and the same material, they may either be fashioned into a dream of beauty, a place of perfect rest and refreshment of mind and body - a series of soul-satisfying pictures - a treasure of well-set jewels; or they may be so misused that everything is jarring and displeasing. To learn how to perceive the difference and how to do right is to apprehend gardening as a fine art. In practice it is to place every plant or group of plants with such thoughtful care and definite intention that they shall form apart of a harmonious whole, and that successive portions, or in some cases even single details, shall show a series of pictures. It is so to regulate the trees and undergrowth of the wood that their lines and masses come into beautiful form and harmonious proportion; it is to be always watching, noting and doing, and putting oneself meanwhile into closest acquaintance and sympathy with the growing things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a Flower Garden A beautiful arrangement of the planting would be to run a triple row of tulips, hyacinths or narcissi along the edges of all the beds and sow English daisy seed, pansies, ageratums or other low-growing plants among them to cover the ground when they are through blooming. On the less sunny borders the lobelias would be beautiful, as would the dwarf morn ing glories which remain open all day. The tufted pansies are permanent and beautiful border plants, especially the yellow ones, and one can compose very artistic color schemes by using flowers that harmonize with the edging plants in the different beds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alpine Flowers for English Gardens Alpine plants fringe the vast fields of snow and ice of the high hills, and at great elevations have often scarcely time to flower and ripen a few seeds before they are again im bedded; while sometimes, if the' previous year's snow has been very heavy, and the present year's sun is weak, numbers of them may remain beneath the surface for more than a year. Enormous areas of ground, inhabited by alpine plants, are every year covered by a deep -bed of snow. Where the tall tree or shrub cannot exist from the intense cold, at deep soft mass of downy snow settles upon these minute plants, like a great cloud-borne quilt, under which 'they rest un tortured by the alternation of frost and biting wind with moist, balmy, and spring-like days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook to the Flower Garden and Greenhouse The third edition of this work presented such a total change from the first two that it could hardly be recognised, and at the eleventh hour I had merely an Opportunity of disclaiming all the alterations. In revising the work for the fourth edition I have removed nearly eighty pages which were taken from, and belonged to, botanical dictionaries, and have restored much that had been taken away to make room for matter not original. I have not disturbed the alphabetical arrangement, although I have expunged the names of many genera and species of no earthly use to the florist; for I consider the work belongs to the popular flowers, and not to botanical collections, besides which I have a thorough deep-rooted aversion to Copying from others. I trust I have improved even upon the original edition, and at least have the satisfaction of knowing it is all my own. N.o., llnlracm. Linnean: 16, lionadclp/i 8, - The mallows are endogenous plants. Com prising herbs, shrubs, and trees, with simple leaves which are usually lobed, and with showy owers which, with very few exceptions, have five sepals and five petals. The recognition of mallow worts by the beginner in botany is extremely easy, as the family likeness is preserved all through in a con spicuous way. The manner in which the owers are spirally twisted before they expand is peculiar, and the union of the filaments of the stamens into a tube which sheathes the style is equally peculiar and characteristic. The ovary consists of numerous carpels arranged in a whorl around a central axis; they are one-celled the seeds are somewhat three-sided, and are sometimes covered with a cottony down. In this family we find the mallow, the hibiscus, the hollyhock, the cotton plant, the side, and the abutilon, all more or less familiar owers. The silk cotton tree (bumbam) is closelv related to the mallows, although properly placed in a separate order. It is from its seed-vessels that the soft fibre is derived, precisely as in the common cotton which is strictly malvaceous. P, 33. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ladie's Flower-Garden: Perennials Tan plants I propose to treat of in the present work are principally those which remain several years in the ground without requiring to be taken up and replanted; owering every summer, and generally dying down to the ground in winter, but when they do so, springing up again from the root in spring. These plants are seldom raised from seed, and when they are, they do not ower till the second or third year; but they are generally propagated by dividing the roots either in autumn, when the plants have done owering and are in a state of repose, or in spring, just before the young shoots begin to grow. The latter is the most general period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
