Book excerpt: A production type computer program has been developed which is capable of analyzing the supersonic flow fields associated with aximmetric nozzle-base-boattail assemblies. Using the method of characteristics, an analysis for both the nozzle and boattail flow fields was developed. The analysis is based on the governing gas dynamic equations for a rotational flow of a frozen or equilibrium gas mixture. The transonic method developed by Kliegel was used to obtain the initial-value line for the nozzle flow field analysis. If desired, axisymmetric tabular data can be input for the nozzle initial-value line. Either uniform flow or axisymmetric tabular data can be used to specify the initial-value line for the boattail flow field analysis. The nozzle and boattail contours can be specified as conical, second-order polynomial or tabular contours. (Author).

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental investigation of the transonic flow over a turbojet boat-tail including the effects of the nozzle exhaust flow are presented. A new type of transonic facility with controllable infection and porosity at the tunnel wall was developed. It was used in the present investigation to simulate accurately both the inviscid and viscous flow fields so as to best represent the complex interaction prevalent at these conditions. The operation and performance of the facility is described here. The AGARD 15 degrees boat-tail nozzle was used in the present study since the flow field over this nacelle has been reported extensively by several investigators. Therefore it established a reference configuration that serves to check proper facility operation and for comparison of the results. The present tests were conducted at a Mach number of approximately .90 in a test section of 23.25 inch (59.0 cm) diameter. Detailed measurements of the static pressure distribution on the boat-tail in the facility indicate a significant upstream movement of the separation point and shock with small to moderate changes in the nozzle pressure ratio while increases in the Reynolds number cause a downstream movement of the separation point and of the shock wave.

The flow field analysis is based on the governing equations for the rotational flow of a frozen or equilibrium gas mixture. The contour optimization is based on the direct optimization of a nonlinear function of several (three or less) geometric variables. The nozzle and boattail contours are modeled as a second-order polynomial and a cone, respectively. For fixed initial contours and nozzle and boattail lengths, the second-order polynomial nozzle contour is uniquely specified by the nozzle throat attachment angle and the nozzle exit lip radius, and the conical boattail is uniquely specified by the boattail exit lip radius. These three independent parameters are varied to determine the unique nozzle-base-boattail configuration that yields maximum thrust. Three methods are included in the program to determine the maximum thrust contour. Each method requires an initial estimate of the geometry that produces maximum thrust. The three methods were also applied to the design of nozzle-base-boattail configurations. The three-dimensional optimizations were found to be practical for finding the maximum thrust attainable for a nozzle-base-boattail assembly. Each of the three methods converged efficiently to the maximum thrust nozzle-base-boattail contour.

Book excerpt: A new technique is presented for the numerical solution of quasi-one-dimensional, vibrational and chemical nonequilibrium nozzle flows including nonequilibrium conditions both upstream and downstream of the throat. This new technique is a time-dependent analysis which entails the explicite finite-difference solution of the quasi-one-dimensional unsteady flow equations in steps of time, starting with assumed initial distributions throughout the nozzle. The steady-state solution is approached at large values of time. A virtue of the present time-dependent analysis is its simplicity, which prevails from its initial physical formulation to the successful receipt of numerical results. Also, the present solution yields the transient as well as the steady-state nonequilibrium nozzle flows. To exemplify the present analysis, results are given for several cases of vibrational and chemical nonequilibrium expansions through nozzles. (Author).
