Book Synopsis Flossmoor, Illinois by : Elise D. Kabbes
Download or read book Flossmoor, Illinois written by Elise D. Kabbes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Village of Flossmoor, Illinois, was incorporated in June 1924. The vote was the result of a movement that began in the furnace room of the new Leavitt Avenue school, where the men gathered for a "smoke" during a PTA dinner. At the time of incorporation, the population of Flossmoor was 265 and the Village encompassed almost two square miles. The settlement of Flossmoor, leading up to incorporation, was the outgrowth of three distinct movements. German immigrants fleeing political upheaval in the 1840s were the first European settlers in the area. The commercial ventures of the Illinois Central Railroad make up the second significant factor in the development of Flossmoor. The Flossmoor train depot was, and is, the hub of Flossmoor. The extension of the train line and the settlement of Flossmoor had one final impetus--golf! This year, the Flossmoor Country Club celebrates its 100th anniversary, still nestled in the original neighborhoods of Flossmoor with street names bearing witness to the founders' love of golf, including Evans, Caddy, Bunker, Brassie, and Hagen.

Download or read book The Egyptian Trail in Illinois written by James R. Wright and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey down one of the most important roadways in the annals of Illinois transportation history. Stretching from Chicago to Cairo, the Egyptian Trail was one of the earliest "improved" roadways in Illinois. Dating to 1915, it was the longest road in the state, running four hundred miles through 20 counties and over 60 towns. The project was the brainchild of two Mattoon men, Dr. Iverson Lumpkin and Ernest B. Tucker, who realized the southern reaches of the state should be linked with Chicago along the same path as the Illinois Central Railroad. Though long forgotten today, the trail also served as the basic template for the route of Interstate 57. Author James R. Wright takes a road trip through the fascinating heritage of the Egyptian Trail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Which neighborhood?" It's one of the first questions you're asked when you move to Chicago. And the answer you give - be it Bucktown, Bronzeville, or Bridgeport - can give your inquisitor a good idea of who you are, especially in a metropolis with so many different neighborhoods and suburbs to choose from." "Many of us know little of the neighborhoods beyond those where we work, play, and live. This is particularly true in Chicagoland, a region that spans over 4,400 square miles and is home to more than 9.5 million residents. Now, historian Ann Durkin Keating's compact guide, drawn largely from the bestselling Encyclopedia of Chicago, brings the history of Chicago neighborhoods to life."--BOOK JACKET.
