Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Winneshiek County The investigations upon which this report is chie y based were carried on largely during the spring, summer and fall of 1903. Every township in the county was visited, and certain typical localities were more thoroughly studied. Thus Moneek and Ft. Atkinson were selected for the study of the ora of the rougher territory of the two principal river systems in the southern part of the county; the vicinity of Calmar for the southerly prairie, and Orleans township and Bluffton for that in the western part of the county; for the rougher wooded region the entire gorge of the. Oneota was traversed a number of times across the county, Decorah, Bluffton and Kendallville being the main centers of investigation, while the hilly country bordering Canoe creek and Bear creek received some attention; and the vicinity of Hesper, with its woods and prairies, and unique exposures of St. Peter sandstone proved the richest and most interesting single locality in the county. The ora of this county had received some previous attention. Arthur's Flora of Iowa* contains numerous references to plants from this county, Which are based, at least in large part, on material furnished by Mrs. M. 0. Carter of Hesper, and Mr. E. W. D. Holway, formerly of Decorah; individual references are also made to Winneshiek county plants by a number of other authors who did not secure the material themselves, but received it from others - chiefly from Mrs. Carter, and Messrs. E. W. D. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Flora of Westchester County The botanists of New York city are active, industrious collectors, and have absolutely exhausted most of the localities within walking distance of the city; especially such portions of New Jersey, Staten Island and parts of Long Island. The Harlem River, however, seems to have been, to a great extent, the limit to their excursions in this direction, hence, this county is less known to New York botanists than any other region within the same distance of the city. The collecting of information has, therefore, been more formidable than suspected. The State of New York has a remarkably large Flora but it has a territory extending about 3 50 miles from north to south, and nearly the same distance from east to west - giving it a wide range of climate and temperature. It has plains along the coast elevated just a little above the sea level, and mountains on the eastern border rising feet above the ocean, it possesses every variety of soil, from the sands of the Saranac region to the alluvial plains of the western slope and the rich bottom lands of the head waters of the Susquehanna, and the val leys of the Mohawk and the Upper Hudson. Dr. Torrey, in his report of the Flora of the State, stated that the number of owering plants would reach 5 and the Ferns and Lycopodiaceae, sixty. There will be great reason, then, for wonder, when it is found that the number of plants growing without cultivation in Westchester County a territory about fifty miles in extent from north to south, and whose average width from east to west is not half so much - is more than a thousand. There are owering plants enumerated in this catalogue, and forty-six ferns and their allies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key and Flora: Northern and Central States In the matter of nomenclature it seems best for those who do not wish to be hopelessly sectional to follow the rulings of the Vienna Congress. The author deems himself fortunate to have been able in this connection to avail himself of the deci sions of the staff of the Gray Herbarium, as embodied in the seventh edition of Gray's Manual of Botany, and to get advice from the same source in regard to names of cultivated plants not described in the Manual. His most sincere thanks are hereby tendered for this invaluable assistance. At the risk of sometimes seeming pedantic the writer has adopted the practice of discarding, for the most part, such un scientific expressions as stemless plants, radical leaves, calyx adnate to the ovary, and several others. It is certain that if the plant descriptions which contain such terms were now being framed for the first time on the basis of present day morphology, these terms would not be used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Northeastern Pennsylvania In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Doctor Ever'hart, as a supplement to the collection of woods and seeds of Lackawanna County, which he was making at the time he was stricken with his last illness, labeled and now on exhibition in the Museum, I presented my Herbarium of over specimens to the institution which bears its founder's name. Incorporated in the Herbarium is a practically complete collection of the Flora of this part of the state, particularly of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. In further carrying out the wishes of Doctor Everhart I have prepared this check list of the Flora of the above region for publication. A preliminary list of the plants in the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys, of which Prof. W. R. Dudley, then of Cornell University, was the author, was published under the auspices of the Lackawanna Institute of History and Science, in 1887. This volume named 769 species as reported and classified. In 1892, Professor Dudley, then connected with the Leland Stanford Uni versity of California, and Prof. Charles 0. Thurston of the Wyoming Seminary Scientific Department combined their per sonal notes, observations and collections with those of other students of local botanical research and issued a very complete catalog of The Flowering Plants and vascular Cryptogams found in and near the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys. This volume contained the names of 107 orders and 974 species, to which there were later addenda of 88 species, - a total of Of this number several have since been considered doubtful, while others have become exterminated through forest fires or advance of cultivated areas and are not represented in this check list. The check list herewith presented contains the names of 115 orders and species. The specimens have very largelybeen collected by myself, mounted and preserved in the Alfred Twining Herbarium in the Everhart Museum. With few exceptions every plant named in this Flora is represented in the above Herbarium. There is also in this Herbarium a col lection of Filices and fern allies, - an almost complete representa tion of the ferns of the United States, and many foreign ferns with rare and odd varieties and forms. The Orchidaceae, Liliaceae and Violaceae of the eastern half of the United States are largely represented as well as the Cyperaceae and Gramineae. The classifications of the more important genera have been veri fied by such expert authority as Prof. Charles S. Sargent, the late Dr. Thomas C. Porter, the late Dr. Thomas Morong, the late Prof. James A. Graves, and Prof. E. Brainerd. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora Cestrica: An Herborizing Companion for the Young Botanists of Chester County, State of Pennsylvania Wan this revised Edition was commenced, it was contemplated with the aid of kind Friends - to insert a brief description of all the indigenous species of the Vegetable Kingdom which had been detected in our County, - together with such introduced plants as had become naturalized, or were cunt-warn) for useful purposes. It soon became apparent, however, that the lower Orders (especially the Mgr) were so multitudinous, as well as obscure, that it would require more time to accomplish the undertaking, than I at least, had any right to reckon upon. It was found, also, that to include the whole, would render the work inconveniently voluminous. A descriptive enumeration of the hagi, alone, would make a respect able volume. It was therefore concluded to omit all below the Lichem, - and leave thfl portion of our Botany to the future enter prise of our Chester County Naturalists. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller Winner of the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize Winner of the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism Named a best book of the year by: the Los Angeles Times the San Francisco Chronicle the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch the Chicago Tribune the Seattle Times "A stunning look at a problem that has dire consequences for our country.”-New York Post The dramatic story of Methamphetamine as it comes to the American Heartland-a timely, moving, account of one community's attempt to confront the epidemic and see their way to a brighter future. Crystal methamphetamine is widely considered to be the most dangerous drug in the world, and nowhere is that more true than in the small towns of the American heartland. Methland is the story of the drug as it infiltrates the community of Oelwein, Iowa (pop. 6,159), a once-thriving farming and railroad community. Tracing the connections between the lives touched by meth and the global forces that have set the stage for the epidemic, Methland offers a vital and unique perspective on a pressing contemporary tragedy. Oelwein, Iowa is like thousand of other small towns across the county. It has been left in the dust by the consolidation of the agricultural industry, a depressed local economy and an out-migration of people. If this wasn't enough to deal with, an incredibly cheap, long-lasting, and highly addictive drug has come to town, touching virtually everyone's lives. Journalist Nick Reding reported this story over a period of four years, and he brings us into the heart of the town through an ensemble cast of intimately drawn characters, including: Clay Hallburg, the town doctor, who fights meth even as he struggles with his own alcoholism; Nathan Lein, the town prosecutor, whose case load is filled almost exclusively with meth-related crime, and Jeff Rohrick, who is still trying to kick a meth habit after four years. Methland is a portrait of a community under siege, of the lives the drug has devastated, and of the heroes who continue to fight the war. It will appeal to readers of David Sheff's bestselling Beautiful Boy, and serve as inspiration for those who believe in the power of everyday people to change their world for the better.
