Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bermuda in Periodical Literature: With Occasional References to Other Works a Bibliography By far the greater part of what has been written con cerning Bermuda has appeared in various periodicals and the publications of learned societies. These writings may roughly be divided into historical and descriptive, and those relating to natural history. Of history, properly speaking, little has appeared; but many descriptive articles have been written by tourists and others who have visited those beautiful islands. Their geographical situation and subtropical fauna and flora early attracted the attention of those interested in scientific phenomena. Soon after beginning this work it became apparent to the compiler that the Bermudas have for the past half century been a favorite field of the zoologist, botanist, and geologist. Bearing this in mind, a special effort has been made to render the record of their labors as complete as possible. In order to do this, references are made to some works which are not periodicals, mostly, however, by authors who have also made contributions to periodical literature concerning the flora and fauna of those islands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants of the Bermudas: Or Somers' Islands More important cultivated plants which have been introduced are referred to under their respective orders, and a list of those of less importance will be found at the end of the book. Some few technical terms have, of necessity, been used, but an explanation of these will be found in the Glossary. As an apology for introducing this work, I may state that, hitherto, the only attempt in this direction has been an alphabet ical catalogue of plants compiled by Dr. Hinson from a list left in the Public Library by Governor Lefroy. To this Catalogue I have now added about one hundred and fifty species of indigenous and naturalized plants - a large number considering the small area (twenty square miles) of our Islands. It focused on the detailed problems of animal dispersal and speciation. Like Darwin, Wallace classified islands as either oceanic (no previous connection to a land mass) or continental (previously connected to a land mass). He considered the means by which each class of island might become colonized, the types of animals most likely to perform the necessary migrations, and the conditions-such as major climactic or geologic change-under which the migrations might have been made. Wallace was the first to use the new knowledge of Pleistocene ice ages to explain certain phenomena of animal distribution, and in Island Life he speculated about the possible causes of glaciation. He was one of the few 19th-century scientists to realize that astronomical causes alone would not suffice, but had to be combined with a corresponding elevation in the northern land mass -- Abe books website.

I presented the results of my study of the leaf structure of the sand dune plants of Bermuda. So many points of interest developed in the course of that investi gation, that I undertook a study of the leaf structure of the char acteristic species growing along the sea shores of New Jersey. This investigation was also in part a continuation of those previously conducted on the geographic distribution of the New Jersey strand ora begun in 1892 and continued down to the present year. Book excerpt: The inspiring story of David Wingate, a living legend among birders, who brought the Bermuda petrel back from presumed extinction Rare Birds is a tale of obsession, of hope, of fighting for redemption against incredible odds. It is the story of how Bermuda’s David Wingate changed the world—or at least a little slice of it—despite the many voices telling him he was crazy to try. This tiny island in the middle of the North Atlantic was once the breeding ground for millions of Bermuda petrels. Also known as cahows, the graceful and acrobatic birds fly almost nonstop most of their lives, drinking seawater and sleeping on the wing. But shortly after humans arrived here, more than three centuries ago, the cahows had vanished, eaten into extinction by the country’s first settlers. Then, in the early 1900s, tantalizing hints of the cahows’ continued existence began to emerge. In 1951, an American ornithologist and a Bermudian naturalist mounted a last-ditch effort to find the birds that had come to seem little more than a legend, bringing a teenage Wingate—already a noted birder—along for the ride. When the stunned scientists pulled a blinking, docile cahow from deep within a rocky cliffside, it made headlines around the world—and told Wingate what he was put on this earth to do. Starting with just seven nesting pairs of the birds, Wingate would devote his life to giving the cahows the chance they needed in their centuries-long struggle for survival — battling hurricanes, invasive species, DDT, the American military, and personal tragedy along the way. It took six decades of obsessive dedication, but the cahow, still among the rarest of seabirds, has reached the hundred-pair mark and continues its nail-biting climb to repopulation. And Wingate has seen his dream fulfilled as the birds returned to Nonsuch, an island habitat he hand-restored for them plant-by-plant in anticipation of this day. His passion for resuscitating this “Lazarus species” has made him an icon among birders, and his story is an inspiring celebration of the resilience of nature, the power of persistence, and the value of going your own way.

Book excerpt: Flora of Madeira is the first book to describe fully all of the vascular plants of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands. It covers over 1360 species of native and naturalized plants, many of them little known. A high proportion of taxa, some 16%, are endemic to the islands themselves or are restricted to Macaronesia (the collective name for the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Salvages, Canaries and Cape Verdes). Isolated from other land-masses, the Madeiran islands are botanically rich and diverse, and the rugged and beautiful landscape embraces a broad range of habitats. Madeira also contains the most extensive remaining areas of laurisilva, the evergreen forest which is the last representative of the ancient Tethyan forests of S. Europe and N. Africa. The remote Salvage Islands have a smaller but equally interesting flora. Flora provides descriptions and keys for taxa at all levels, as well as information on habitats, distributions and flowering times. Local names are also cited. Fifty-seven plates of original drawings illustrate 212 of the Madeiran and Macaronesian endemic taxa, some of them depicted for the first time. Introductory chapters describe the geography of the islands, the main vegetation types and the extensive measures being implemented to conserve this unique flora. Flora of Madeira is the only fully comprehensive publication on the wild flora of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands, for use as both a reference work and a field guide. This book is a digital reprint of ISBN 0-11-310017-5 (1994).
