Book Synopsis Floodplain Management by : Bob Freitag
Download or read book Floodplain Management written by Bob Freitag and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flooding river is very hard to stop. Many residents of the United States have discovered this the hard way. Right now, over five million Americans hold flood insurance policies from the National Flood Insurance Program, which estimates that flooding causes at least six billion dollars in damages every year. Like rivers after a rainstorm, the financial costs are rising along with the toll on residents. And the worst is probably yet to come. Most scientists believe that global climate change will result in increases in flooding. The authors of this book present a straightforward argument: the time to stop a flooding rivers is before is before it floods. Floodplain Management outlines a new paradigm for flood management, one that emphasizes cost-effective, long-term success by integrating physical, chemical, and biological systems with our societal capabilities. It describes our present flood management practices, which are often based on dam or levee projects that do not incorporate the latest understandings about river processes. And it suggests that a better solution is to work with the natural tendencies of the river: retreat from the floodplain by preventing future development (and sometimes even removing existing structures); accommodate the effects of floodwaters with building practices; and protect assets with nonstructural measures if possible, and with large structural projects only if absolutely necessary.

Book Synopsis Understanding Options for Agricultural Production by : G.Y. Tsuji
Download or read book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production written by G.Y. Tsuji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first premise of this book is that farmers need access to options for improving their situation. In agricultural terms, these options might be manage ment alternatives or different crops to grow, that can stabilize or increase household income, that reduce soil degradation and dependence on off-farm inputs, or that exploit local market opportunities. Farmers need a facilitating environment, in which affordable credit is available if needed, in which policies are conducive to judicious management of natural resources, and in which costs and prices of production are stable. Another key ingredient of this facilitating environment is information: an understanding of which options are viable, how these operate at the farm level, and what their impact may be on the things that farmers perceive as being important. The second premise is that systems analysis and simulation have an impor tant role to play in fostering this understanding of options, traditional field experimentation being time-consuming and costly. This book summarizes the activities of the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT) project, an international initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). IBSNAT was an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of understanding options through systems analysis and simulation for the ultimate benefit of farm households in the tropics and subtropics. The idea for the book was first suggested at one of the last IBSNAT group meetings held at the University of Hawaii in 1993.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Azolla on Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Rice-wheat Rotations of Nepal by : Junoo Kamal Tuladhar
Download or read book The Effect of Azolla on Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Rice-wheat Rotations of Nepal written by Junoo Kamal Tuladhar and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low productivity of the rice-wheat cropping system in Nepal is associated with a low efficiency of applied mineral N in rice. The aquatic fern Azolla was used to reduce N losses via ammonia volatilization from the flooded lowland rice in farmers' field conditions in Nepal. The Azolla cover changed the floodwater chemistry, thus reducing ammonia volatilization losses. The use of Azolla in combination with Urea increased rice yields by 15% and reduced urea-N losses from 17-38% to 2-8%. A combined use of Azolla and urea is a viable option to enhance the productivity of rice-wheat systems in Nepal.
