Book excerpt: First published in 1872, this two-volume memoir by explorer, ethnographer and diplomat Sir Richard Burton (1821–90) was written while Burton and John Hanning Speke were making preparations for their expedition to solve one of the major geographical mysteries of the nineteenth century - the location of the source of the Nile. Burton and Speke arrived in Zanzibar in December 1856, and spent several months in preparations for their journey. During this time, Burton made detailed notes on his surroundings which were later developed into this book. Volume 1 focuses on 'The City and the Island'. Burton discusses the significance of the 'Nile question' as well as recording geographical, botanical, meteorological, and ethnographic observations. Volume 2 concerns the two expeditions of 1857–9, including the discovery of Lake Tanganyika and Speke's later independent discovery of Lake Victoria, which gave rise to a notorious dispute between the two men.
Book Synopsis Death of a Century by : Daniel Robinson
Download or read book Death of a Century written by Daniel Robinson and published by Arcade. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenwich, Connecticut, 1922. Newspaperman Joe Henry finds himself the primary suspect when his friend and fellow reporter Wynton Gresham is murdered. Both were veterans of French battles during World War II—the war that was supposed to end all wars. Unanswered questions pile up in the wake of a violent night: Gresham lies dead in his home; a manuscript he had just completed has gone missing; three Frenchmen have been killed in a car wreck less than a mile from Gresham’s home; and a trunk full of Gresham’s clothes sits neatly packed in his bedroom. When Henry discovers a one-way ticket reserved in his friend’s name aboard a steamship to France, he assumes Gresham’s identity and slips away from the grasp of the town sheriff to pursue the truth about his friend’s death. In Paris, he becomes a hunted man. To clear his name he must find Gresham’s murderer while evading his own demise and discover the secret revealed in the lost manuscript. In the process, with the help of other shattered expat veterans living in Paris, he finds hope in a world irrevocably altered by war. With cameos from Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein, Death of a Century is at once a playful romp that brings the Paris of the Lost Generation to life and a compassionate story of the enduring impact of war on a generation.

Book excerpt: AMERICAN FREEDOM AND JUSTICE VS. THE TYRANNIES OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY The new government in central Europe, called the Confederated Principalities of Europe, was formed by an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and the West Virginians led by Mike Stearns who were transplanted into 17th-century Germany by a mysterious cosmic accident. The new regime is shaky. Outside its borders, the Thirty Years War continues to rage. Within, it is beset by financial crisis as well as the political and social tensions between the democratic ideals of the 20th-century Americans and the aristocracy which continues to rule the roost in the CPE as everywhere in Europe. Worst of all, the CPE has aroused the implacable hostility of Cardinal Richelieu, the effective ruler of France. Richelieu has created the League of Ostend in order to strike at the weakest link in the CPE's armor¾its dependence on the Baltic as the lifeline between Gustav Adolf's Sweden and the rest of his realm. The greatest naval war in European history is about to erupt. Like it or not, Gustavus Adolphus will have to rely on Mike Stearns and the technical wizardry of his obstreperous Americans to save the King of Sweden from ruin. Caught in the conflagration are two American diplomatic missions abroaRebecca Stearns' mission to France and Holland, and the embassy which Mike Stearns sent to King Charles of England headed by his sister Rita and Melissa Mailey. Rebecca finds herself trapped in war-torn Amsterdam; Rita and Melissa, imprisoned in the Tower of London. And much as Mike wants to transport 20th-century values into war-torn 17th-century Europe by Sweet Reason, still he finds comfort in the fact that Julie, who once trained to be an Olympic marksman, still has her rifle . . .
