Download or read book Flight Testing Homebuilt Aircraft written by Vaughan Askue and published by Iowa State Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now that it's built, how well will it fly? Flight Testing Homebuilt Aircraft tells how to test such aircraft systematically and safely, with professional results. It defines flight testing as a four-phase step-by-step process of learning the limitations of an aircraft; defining and eliminating aircraft problems; and determining aircraft capability and optimum flying techniques - all with minimum risk to pilot and machine. With straightforward description and more than 80 illustrations, the book teaches builders to use this process to design thorough, safe flight tests customized to specific aircraft in specific testing environments.

Book excerpt: This advisory circular (AC) sets forth suggestions and safety related recommendations to assist amateur and ultralight builders in developing individualized aircraft flight test plans. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the United States Ultralight Association (USUA) are concerned and committed to improving the safety record of amateur-built and ultralight aircraft. The FAA Administrator, T. Allen McArtor, and EAA President, Paul H. Poberezny, signed a Memorandum of Agreement on August 1, 1988, which addressed the need for educational and safety programs to assist amateur-builders in test flying their aircraft. In accordance with that agreement, this AC provides guidelines for flight testing amateur built aircraft. As part of the FAA's continuing efforts to improve the safety record of all types of general aviation aircraft, this AC has been revised to include flight testing recommendations for canard-type and ultralight aircraft. This AC's purpose is the following: (1) To make amateur-built/ultralight aircraft pilots aware that test flying an aircraft is a critical undertaking, which should be approached with thorough planning, skill, and common sense. (2) To provide recommendations and suggestions that can be combined with other sources on test flying (e.g., the aircraft plan/kit manufacturer's flight testing instructions, other flight testing data). This will assist the amateur/ultralight owner to develop a detailed flight test plan, tailored for their aircraft and resources. The flight test plan is the heart of all professional flight testing. The plan should account for every hour spent in the flight test phase and should be adhered to with the same respect for the unknown that all successful test pilots share. The time allotted for each phase of a personalized flight test plan may vary, and each phase may have more events or checks than suggested in this AC. The goals, however, should be the same. The two goals for an amateur builder/ ultralight owner should be as follows: (1) At the end of the aircraft's flight test phase, the aircraft will have been adequately tested and found airworthy and safe to operate within its established operational envelope. (2) Incorporation of the flight test operational and performance data into the aircraft's flight manual so the pilot can reference the data prior to each flight.

Book Synopsis Performance of Light Aircraft by : John T. Lowry
Download or read book Performance of Light Aircraft written by John T. Lowry and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilots, aviation students, kitplane builders, aircraft fleet operators and aeronautical engineers can all determine how their propeller-driven airplanes will perform, under any conditions, by using the step-by-step bootstrap approach introduced in this book. A few routine flying manoeuvres (climbs, glides, a level speed run) will give the necessary nine numbers. High-school level calculations then give performance numbers with much greater detail and accuracy than many other methods - for the reader's individual aircraft.

Book Synopsis The Propeller under the Bed by : Eileen A. Bjorkman
Download or read book The Propeller under the Bed written by Eileen A. Bjorkman and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 25, 2010, Arnold Ebneter flew across the country in a plane he designed and built himself, setting an aviation world record for aircraft of its class. He was eighty-two at the time and the flight represented the culmination of a dream he’d cultivated since his childhood in the 1930s. Eileen Bjorkman — herself a pilot and aeronautical engineer — frames her father’s journey from teenage airplane enthusiast to Air Force pilot and Boeing engineer in the context of the rise, near extermination, and ongoing interest in homebuilt aircraft in the United States. She gives us a glimpse into life growing up in a “flying family” with two pilots for parents, a family plane named Charlie, and quite literally, a propeller under her parents’ bed. From early airplane designs serialized in magazines to the annual Oshkosh Fly-in where you can see experimental aircraft on display, Bjorkman offers a personal take on the history of building something in your garage that you can actually (and legally) fly as well as how the homebuilt aircraft movement has contributed to aviation and innovation in America.
