This book was released on 1973 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-flight flying qualities experiment using the variable stability X-22A aircraft investigated longitudinal flying qualities requirements for STOL aircraft in terminal area operations. Emphasis was placed on defining minimum requirements for the short-term response in VFR and IFR landing approaches at representative steep STOL approach conditions of 65 and 80 knots. Evaluation flights were conducted in negligible and moderate turbulence for a wide range of short-term frequencies and dampings. Identification of the dynamics of the evaluation configurations was performed, to a large extent, by a new, advanced digital identification technique developed for the X-22A aircraft.

Book excerpt: A flight investigation of the influence of lateral-directional dynamics and control power requirements on flying qualities for STOL aircraft in terminal area operations was conducted using the X-22A variable stability aircraft. The primary dynamic variables of the experiment were roll mode time constant, Dutch roll undamped natural frequency, roll-to-sideslip ratio, and yaw due to aileron; in addition, the roll control power available was varied by electrically limiting the lateral stick command of the evaluation pilot. Three pilots performed 102 evaluations of various combinations of these variables at a representative STOL approach condition of gamma = -7.5 degrees, V = 65 kts. During the evaluations, a qualitative separation of ambient turbulence level was made through approximate measurements from the aircraft. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Three pilots performed 102 evaluations of various combinations of variables at a representative STOL approach condition of gamma = 7.5 degrees, V = 65 kts. During the evaluations, a qualitative separation of ambient turbulence level was made through approximate measurements from the aircraft. The configuration dynamics were identified and verified with a digital identification technique developed for the X-22A, and data analyses include statistical measurements of pilot workload and performance, as well as correlation of pilot rating data with these measures, the configuration dynamics, and the roll control power available. Book Synopsis Flight Evaluation of Various Short Period Dynamics at Four Drag Configurations for the Landing Approach Task by : Charles Ray Chalk
Download or read book Flight Evaluation of Various Short Period Dynamics at Four Drag Configurations for the Landing Approach Task written by Charles Ray Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The T-33 variable stability and variable drag airplane was used in a flight program to evaluate various longitudinal short period characteristics at each of four drag configurations for the landing approach task. Pilot rating and comment data were collected and used to determine short period requirements for the landing approach task. The importance of the slope of the thrust required vs. velocity curve is discussed and related to pilot comments and control difficulties. The longitudinal control gain selected by the pilot was a function of short period frequency and damping ratio. Curves relating control authority and short period frequency and damping ratio are derived from these data. The power spectral density of the pilot's elevator stick motion was found to be significantly affected by short period dynamics and atmospheric turbulence.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight investigation was undertaken of the longitudinal handling qualities of the STOL class of aircraft controlled through the modulation of pitch and normal thrust, and flown on steep, instrument landing approaches at low airspeed. Pilots' assessments of the characteristics resulting from independent variations in both short and long term longitudinal dynamics were obtained. It was found that the pitch control characteristics dominated the handling qualities. The more easily and precisely pitch could be controlled, the more adverse the control characteristics of the other degrees of freedom the pilot would accept. When precise long-term control of airspeed through pitch modulation was not difficult, the pilots were prepared to tolerate operation well along the backside of the power-required curve.

Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to determine the minimum acceptable level of longitudinal stability for a representative turbofan STOL (short take-off and landing) transport airplane during the landing approach. Real-time digital simulation techniques were used. The computer was programed with equations of motion for six degrees of freedom, and the aerodynamic inputs were based on measured wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was an instrument approach to a breakout at a 60-m (200-ft) ceiling.
