This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible electronics is a multidisciplinary research topic which covers the entire spectrum, from materials and processes for manufacturing thin layers of organic and inorganic semiconductors, dielectrics and other functional layers on thin and flexible substrates, to dedicated concepts and design methods for implementing complete electronic systems on flexible substrates. Specifically, this includes research and development in the fields of flexible interconnects, organic and inorganic TFT processes and displays, and sensor and photovoltaics concepts. All must find compatibility with the constraints of flexible substrates, such as low thermal budget, low dimensional stability and mechanical stresses. The synergy between materials, device and system technologies will be the primary driver for pushing large-area flexible electronics and optoelectronics into mass-market applications with bright commercial prospects. While the primary emphasis of the book is on materials and device technologies, several presentations focus on business aspects of flexible electronics. Topics include: silicon TFT processing and characteristics; flexible Si TFT circuits; organic TFTs; flexible displays - OLEDs; and organic electronics and optoelectronics.

Book excerpt: Silicon carbide (SiC) is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that can operate at temperatures well above 300ºC, where silicon cannot perform. In addition, due to a high thermal conductivity equal to copper at room temperature, SiC is an ideal candidate for operation in harsh environments and at high-power levels. Rapid advances in SiC materials and devices have recently resulted in implementation of SiC-based electronic systems, and the impact of these devices is expected to significantly increase in the next several years. This book documents the most recent results on growth of bulk and epitaxial layers, physical and structural properties, process technology, and device development obtained since the 10th International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials 2003 (ICSCRM2003) held in Lyon, France. Extended defects in silicon carbide are highlighted. The nature of defects induced by forward biasing of bipolar devices, as well as methods to suppress the degradation, are addressed.

Book excerpt: Interest in hybrid materials has accelerated recently, in particular because tailoring materials properties through organization of organic/inorganic composites at nanometer length scales is now an important focus for numerous diverse research domains. This book's objective here is to create a communal forum for researchers involved in all areas of organic/inorganic hybrid materials to share perspectives, to learn about leading-edge science and engineering occurring around the world, and to develop new ideas. The book is divided into focus areas that address synthesis and characterization methods, functional hybrid materials, hybrid materials influenced by biology, structured mesoporous materials and materials with multiscale organization. Topics include: methods of patterning hybrid materials; hybrid materials for photonic applications; mesoporous films and monoliths; biofunctional materials; layered hybrid materials; applications-oriented hybrid materials; hybrid materials for electronics, optoelectronics and semiconductor applications; methods of characterizing hybrid materials; and novel synthetic methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special interest afforded biological and bioinspired materials and devices lies in the fact that many biological materials, as diverse as bone and teeth and spider silk, have highly refined and sophisticated platforms of structure that are well organized at hierarchical levels spanning nanoscale to microscale measures. There is absolutely strict and precise control of materials synthesis exerted by these natural systems, and vigorous study and advancement in the fields of biomineralization, molecular biology, and DNA technology, for instance, have brought increasing understanding of such control in ever expanding fashion. This knowledge has been quickly transferred into the design and development of synthetic materials that mimic their biological counterparts. In this context, an explosion in research in the past few years has centered on the identification and synthesis of 1) unique ceramics or composites for biomaterials, magnetic and optical use, 2) self-assembled biopolymeric systems for biomaterials and biosensor application, and 3) colloidal and amphiphilic systems for relevance in biomedicine, nanotechnology, and biosensor fabrication. Therefore, new nanocrystalline composites, nanofibers, biosteel fibers, novel biosensors, distinctive drug-delivery systems, exceptional tissue engineering scaffolds, exclusive molecular imprinting matrices, and innovative photonic crystals are suddenly available. Given this backdrop, the papers in this volume involve biology, medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry, and materials science. Topics include biomineralization and the structure and mechanical, magnetic, and optical properties of biominerals; implant materials for dental, maxillofacial, orthopaedic, urological, and ophthalmic applications; tissue adhesives and cements; material degradation and implant failure; organic modification of surfaces and their biocompatibility; tissue engineering with cells and scaffolding to generate extracellular matrices for tissue regeneration; emerging technologies in tissue engineering, including application of stem cells and gene therapy; in situ and ex situ characterization techniques and imaging of biomaterials; pharmaceutical crystallization and materials for drug and gene delivery; supramolecular and biological self assembly; and structure and dynamics of organic/inorganic interfaces.

This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scaling of device dimensions with a simultaneous increase in functional density has imposed tremendous challenges for materials, technology, integration and reliability of interconnects. To meet requirements of the ITRS roadmap, new materials are being introduced at a faster pace in all functions of multilevel interconnects. The issues addressed in this book cannot be dispelled as simply selecting a low-k material and integrating it into a copper damascene process. The intricacies of the back end for sub-100nm technology include novel processing of low-k materials, employing pore-sealing techniques and capping layers, introducing advanced dielectric and diffusion barriers, and developing novel integration schemes. This is in addition to concerns of performance, yield, and reliability appropriate to nanoscaled interconnects. Although many challenges continue to impede progress along the ITRS roadmap, the contributions in this book confront them head-on. It provides a scientific understanding of the issues and stimulate new approaches to advanced multilevel interconnects.

This book was released on 2004-09-03 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates 20 years of MRS symposia on the topic of amorphous silicon. Contributors showed that the simplified theories developed to explain the limited experimental information available in the early eighties have spurred more sophisticated experimentation - either refining the early understanding or making it irrelevant. The differences of opinion that continue to exist and emerge are probably the hallmark of the amazing vitality of this field. Applications range from 'mature' thin-film transistors, solar cells and image sensors, to the 'emerging' possibility of erbium-doped nanocrystalline silicon-based materials for lasers and amorphous silicon quantum dots for luminescent devices. The book discusses material characterization, growth processes and devices. Each chapter is further subdivided into sections that group papers around common themes. Topics include: nanomaterials; electronic structure; metastable effects; understanding of growth processes; laser-induced crystallization; metal-induced crystallization; other growth techniques; newer devices; solar cells and thin-film transistors.
