Book Synopsis Expanding Classics by : Arlene Holmes-Henderson
Download or read book Expanding Classics written by Arlene Holmes-Henderson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores innovative ways of expanding classical languages and cultures to educational and museum audiences. It shows that classical subjects have an important role to play within society and can enrich individuals’ lives in many different, and perhaps surprising, ways. Chapters present projects covering literacy and engagement with reading, empowering students to understand and use new types of vocabulary, discovering the personal relevance of ancient history and the resonance of ancient material culture and stories. Contributors demonstrate that classical subjects can be taught cost-effectively and inclusively by non-specialist teachers and in non-traditional settings. In their various ways, they highlight the need to rethink the role of Classics in twenty-first-century classrooms and communities. Recommendations are made for further development, including ways to improve research, policy and practice in the field of Classics education. Expanding Classics presents an important series of case studies on classical learning, of interest to museum educators, teacher trainers, school leaders and curriculum designers, as well as those teaching in primary, secondary and further education settings in the UK and worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To truly understand the substance and value of any great philosopher’s work, students must examine political theory against the backdrop of history, the surrounding literature, and the individual theorist’s views on human nature and rational motivation. In this third edition of his classic text, Edward Portis provides students with the framework they need to fully appreciate the original texts they are reading and apply the concepts they are learning. Fully updated since the previous edition almost a decade ago, Portis expands his coverage to include a complete chapter on Max Weber. Further, Portis strengthens his lucid introductions to the greatest theorists of Western political thought, proving them indispensable guides for both the politically engaged citizen and the practicing social scientist. He also provides suggestions, updated for this edition, for further reading in political theory.
Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Synopsis The Space and Practice of Reading by : Chin Ee Loh
Download or read book The Space and Practice of Reading written by Chin Ee Loh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirroring worldwide debates on social class, literacy rates, and social change, this study explores the intersection between reading and social class in Singapore, one of the top scorers on the Programme for International Assessment (PISA) tests, and questions the rhetoric of social change that does not take into account local spaces and practices. This comparative study of reading practices in an elite school and a government school in Singapore draws on practice and spatial perspectives to provide critical insight into how taken-for-granted practices and spaces of reading can be in fact unacknowledged spaces of inequity. Acknowledging the role of social class in shaping reading education is a start to reconfiguring current practices and spaces for more effective and equitable reading practices. This book shows how using localized, contextualized approaches sensitive to the home, school, national and global contexts can lead to more targeted policy and practice transformation in the area of reading instruction and intervention. Chapters in the book include: • Becoming a Reader: Home-School Connections • Singaporean Boys Constructing Global Literate Selves: School-Nation Connections • Levelling the Reading Gap: Socio-Spatial Perspectives The book will be relevant to literacy scholars and educators, library science researchers and sociologists interested in the intersection of class and literacy practices in the 21st century.

Book Synopsis Readers and Reading Culture in the High Roman Empire by : William A. Johnson
Download or read book Readers and Reading Culture in the High Roman Empire written by William A. Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Readers and Reading Culture in the High Roman Empire, William Johnson examines the system and culture of reading among the elite in second-century Rome. The investigation proceeds in case-study fashion using the principal surviving witnesses, beginning with the communities of Pliny and Tacitus (with a look at Pliny's teacher, Quintilian) from the time of the emperor Trajan. Johnson then moves on to explore elite reading during the era of the Antonines, including the medical community around Galen, the philological community around Gellius and Fronto (with a look at the curious reading habits of Fronto's pupil Marcus Aurelius), and the intellectual communities lampooned by the satirist Lucian. Along the way, evidence from the papyri is deployed to help to understand better and more concretely both the mechanics of reading, and the social interactions that surrounded the ancient book. The result is a rich cultural history of individual reading communities that differentiate themselves in interesting ways even while in aggregate showing a coherent reading culture with fascinating similarities and contrasts to the reading culture of today.
