Book excerpt: A Riveting Journey and Quest to Save Democracy From the flames of a Ku Klux Klan cross burning in his home’s front yard, to dealing with the aftermath of Martin Luther King’s assassination, to knowing and working with some of our nation’s most effective public servants, this book shares the passion of reasoned and reasonable people working together to resolve problems and meet opportunities at the global, national, state, and local levels. Highly praised, published columns dig into issues big and small, vital to those interested in improving their community, state, and nation. The book describes, praises, and encourages specific leaders of both parties in our extremely difficult task of making this democracy work for everyone. It concludes with a specific recommendation of action by the reader and others that, the author believes, could contribute to addressing not only the survival of the American dream, but embolden our effort to do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the 2016 presidential election there was widespread shock that the Midwest, the Democrats’ so-called blue wall, had been so effectively breached by Donald Trump. But the blue wall, as The Conservative Heartland makes clear, was never quite as secure as so many observers assumed. A deep look at the Midwest’s history of conservative politics, this timely volume reveals how conservative victories in state houses, legislatures, and national elections in the early twenty-first century, far from coming out of nowhere, in fact had extensive roots across decades of political organization in the region. Focusing on nine states, from Iowa and the Dakotas to Indiana and Ohio, the essays in this collection detail the rise of midwestern conservatism after World War II—a trend that coincided with the transformation of the prewar Republican Party into the New Right. This transformation, the authors contend, involved the Midwest and the Sunbelt states. Through the lenses of race, class, gender, and sexuality, their essays explore the development of midwestern conservative politics in light of deindustrialization, environmentalism, second wave feminism, mass incarceration, privatization, and debates over same-sex marriage and abortion, among other issues. Together these essays map the region’s complex patchwork of viable rural and urban areas, variously subject to a wide array of conflicting interests and concerns; the perspective they provide, at once broad and in-depth, offers unique historical insight into the Midwest’s political complexity—and its status as the last real competitive battleground in presidential elections.

Book excerpt: Chapters 1 and 2 deal with the campaign (especially the myths the Clintonites created about themselves and the failings of the press) and Clinton's first year in office (including the failed nominations, communication crises, and the budget debate). A comprehensive third chapter gives the first usable outline of Clintonism, describing the ideology that lies behind the president's contradictory statements, broken promises, mutating policies, and claims to rise above ideology. Chapters 4 and 5 first dissect the Washington system and its immutability and then, with numerous examples, show how the American political culture frequently opposes its own interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Develop accurate computer models to determine wildfire risks and controlled-burn benefits! Although scientists now recognize that fire is essential to many ecosystems, the ecological and political issues of managing wildfire continue to be vexing. Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks offers multiple perspectives on using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for more effective wildfire management. This innovative technology is the ideal tool to organize and display all the information available, so authorities can make informed judgments based on all the facts. Because the authors are not merely theorizing but discussing the GIS they are actually building and using, Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks offers practical ideas and perspectives, including: specific information on the modeling approach and kinds of data utilized valuable discussions of the social and environmental factors included in the model techniques for predicting the effects of wildfire on neighborhoods, soil erosion, sedimentation, and air quality predictions of long-term ecosystem recovery given wildfires of different sizes and intensities maps, charts, tables, and formulas to make the process of building a GIS understandable and accessible Mapping Wildfire Hazards and Risks is a compilation of the ideas of federal and state agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations on how to rank and prioritize forested watershed areas that are in need of prescribed fire. This book provides the essential information for deciding how to set priorities for wildfire management that might reduce risks or lower future damages.
