Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Ford's forty years of practicing and teaching architecture have focused on one area: the architectural detail. Yet, despite two hugely influential books (The Details of Modern Architecture, volumes 1 and 2), numerous articles, and lectures given from Vancouver to Vienna, there are two questions Ford has, remarkably, never answered: "What is a detail?" and more importantly, "What is a good detail?" Ford is an architect as well as a writer, so it is not surprising that rather than answering these questions in a third book, he spent six years on the design and construction of a house. Building it was not an exercise in the application of ideas about detail; it was, rather, a mechanism for answering those two simple questions.

Book excerpt: For all its emphasis on the direct experience of insight without reliance on the products of the intellect, the Zen tradition has created a huge body of writings. Of this cast literature, the writings associated with the so-called Five Houses of Zen are widely considered to be preeminent. These Five Houses—which arose in China during the ninth and tenth centuries, often referred to as the Golden Age of Zen—were not schools or sects but styles of Zen teaching represented by some of the most outstanding masters in Zen history. The writings of these great Zen teachers are presented here, many translated for the first time. These include: • The sayings of Pai-chang, famous for his Zen dictum "A day without work, a day without food" • Selections from Kuei-shan’s collection of Zen admonitions, considered essential reading by numerous Buddhist teachers • Sun-chi’s unique discussion of the inner meaning of the circular symbol in Zen teaching • Sayings of Huang-po from The Essential Method of Transmission of Mind • Excerpts from The Record of Lin-chi, a great classical text of Zen literature • Ts’ao-shan’s presentation of the famous teaching device known as the Five Ranks • Selections of poetry from the Cascade Collection by Hsueh-tou, renowned for his poetic commentaries on the classic Blue Cliff Record • Yung-ming’s teachings on how to balance the two basic aspects of meditation: concentration and insight

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread interest in constructing and restoring Victorian homes makes this a must-have volume for today's builders, homeowners, architects, and preservationists. It offers an abundance of authentic, finely detailed plans and designs for a variety of Victorian residences. Included are 100 front and side elevations, floor plans, and original designs — all to working scale — for a block of five city houses, a country house with a French roof, a summer house, various styles of cottages, a tool house, and other buildings. The plates also depict a wealth of details: roof and dormer windows, balustrades, iron fences and gates, finials, crestings, gables, brackets, paneling, mantels, front doors, an oriel window, chimneys, and many other elements. Republished directly from a rare 1877 edition, the book offers a wonderfully authentic look back to the distinctive building styles of the Victorian period. It will not only delight builders and restorationists, but any student or lover of period architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notions of culture, rituals and their meanings, the workings of ideology in everyday life, public representations of tradition and ethnicity, and the social consequences of economic transition— these are critical issues in the social anthropology of Russia and other postsocialist countries. Engaged in the negotiation of all these is the House of Culture, which was the key institution for cultural activities and implementation of state cultural policies in all socialist states. The House of Culture was officially responsible for cultural enlightenment, moral edification, and personal cultivation—in short, for implementing the socialist state’s program of “bringing culture to the masses.” Surprisingly, little is known about its past and present condition. This collection of ethnographically rich accounts examines the social significance and everyday performance of Houses of Culture and how they have changed in recent decades. In the years immediately following the end of the Soviet Union, they underwent a deep economic and symbolic crisis, and many closed. Recently, however, there have been signs of a revitalization of the Houses of Culture and a re-orientation of their missions and programs. The contributions to this volume investigate the changing functions and meanings of these vital institutions for the communities that they serve.
