Book excerpt: The focus of this research is in the area of African American male superintendents and their leadership in diverse settings. The research approach adopted in this dissertation used semi-structured interviews with five African American male superintendents that consisted of three main issues: (1) personal; (2) leadership quality/effectiveness and (3) impact on student academic performance. The findings from this research provide evidence that: superintendents believed they gained their focus on education by having strong parental influences; each superintendent believed that their involvement in sports helped them to sharpen their leadership skills at an early age; they believed in having systems in place to monitor and track the performance of their district; being visible in the community has helped to garner support from all stakeholders; and being educated during the civil rights era taught the superintendents a lot about equity issues. The main conclusions drawn from this research were that superintendent efficacy, professional development and a goal toward academic success for all students were the components demonstrated by these district leaders. This research recommends that superintendents have professional development to strengthen strong people skills, create mentorships and shadow-mentoring programs for both African American male superintendent candidates and practicing African American male superintendents new to the job or new to their district, emphasize diversity in leadership, investigate superintendency preparation programs at the university level to address racial issues, and research studies should be more specific on the office of the superintendency. The study also explored how some African American male superintendents successfully navigate the system to gain access and continue to serve. The study contributed to the body of knowledge by revealing through the perception of the participants their lived experiences to navigate and continue in a vocation with a deficient number of African American males. The study employed a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological research design to conduct the research project. The theoretical framework employed was social justice leadership. The researcher selected 4 participants using purposive sampling from a shallow population of African American male superintendents in Texas. Data collection was through semistructured, phenomenological interviews. The participants served as the primary units of analysis to obtain perception on navigation and continuation in the superintendency for African American male superintendents. The findings revealed 3 themes: (a) ascension to the superintendency, (b) continuation in the superintendency, and (c) leadership for social justice. The key findings in the theme of ascension to the superintendency were spiritual capital and job proficiency. The key findings in the theme of continuing in the superintendency were operations problem solving, hiring the most qualified, and board relationships. The key findings in the theme of leadership for social justice were social justice leadership, student focus, and mentoring future leaders.

The data indicates that there are few African American superintendents leading districts, not only in New York State, but nationally as well. There have been significant gains in the number of women obtaining this key educational leadership position in the last twenty-five years, but this increase is much less for African Americans. This study was limited to seven African American superintendents who were currently serving as superintendents in New York State. The results of this study reflect only the experiences, views and perceptions of the seven African American superintendents that participated in this research. Nevertheless, this study contributes to a better understanding of the contexts by which African American superintendents are obtaining their coveted positions. The intent for this study was to contribute to the body of knowledge concerning African American superintendents in this White, male-dominated educational position. The findings of this study revealed that African Americans encountered race and racism, as they sought the position of the superintendency. All of the participating superintendents acknowledged that they had encountered issues of race and racism in the pursuit of the superintendency. However, this study's findings show that the issues of race or racism were experienced differently for each of the participants. What became evident in the findings were their perceptions of and reactions to racism. The findings also revealed that African American superintendents gained access to the superintendency, despite the barriers and challenges they encountered.

Book excerpt: This transformative phenomenological study involved exploring how Black females serving as superintendents in the United States experienced the journey into their roles, the state of the school districts as they began their roles, and their lived experiences as superintendents. I used Black feminist thought as part of answering the following research questions: (a) How do Black female superintendents describe their personal and professional lived experiences while ascending to the position of school district superintendent? (b) How do Black females appointed to the role of school district superintendent describe their lived experiences with leading a school district? Black feminist thought is an evolution of standpoint theory, which challenges the exclusivity and chauvinism of the dominant culture. This study followed a phenomenological approach, the primary method involved conducting semi-structured interviews. This study was comprised of 11 Black female superintendents across the United States who participated in one-on-one Zoom-based interviews. This transformative phenomenological study captured the lived experience of the Black female superintendents that have successfully navigated the prevailing phenomena of glass ceiling, glass cliff, and gatekeeping provided a platform for aspiring Black female superintendents to glean from their predecessors’ experiences. The 11 participants’ responses to questions in their individual interviews revealed the following five themes that answered the first research as (a) preparation, (b) exceptionalism, (c) sponsorship, (d) spirituality, and (e) need to check every box. The five themes that emerged for answering the second research question and describing the 11 Black women’s superintendent experiences were (a) diverse school boards, (b) turnaround school districts, (c) equity warriors, (d) sacrifice, and (e) support system. The participants disclosed that the discriminatory practice that remains evident in the role as superintendent is the gender role expectations that continues to drive Black female superintendents from the profession. The participants were hopeful that their leadership could change American public education for the better as they promoted educational excellence among all students. Thus, the participants’ rich narratives led to implications for policy and practice as well as opportunities for further investigation

Book excerpt: In the post Brown vs. Board of Education era, racial-ethnic minorities are not limited to urban neighborhoods; their migration to suburban areas has been steadily increasing. Although, student demographics of suburban schools have changed, the demographics of school principals have not; in the school year 2007-08, only 17.6% of principals in all US schools were people of color (Keigher & Gruber, 2009). This is statistics is important in context of findings by scholars (e.g., Ronfeldt, Lankford, Loeb, & Wyckoff, 2011; Fullan, 1991) that Principals with diverse backgrounds bring their unique cultural experiences to school community. Principal turnover has a negative effect on student achievement, and, school improvements. In this paper we examine, a) the changes in suburban principal demographics (race/ethnicity, gender, and age) over a 20 year time span and compare these changes to changes in schools in other geographical settings; b) principal turnover and compare the turnover rates to principals in other locales; and c) whether a principal's race/ethnicity or gender was related to the probability of leaving a school in a suburban setting. Using data from the Texas Education Agency, we examine changes in the characteristics of 24,000 Texas principals, with almost 9,500 in suburban districts between 1990 and 2010. The data included race/ethnicity, gender, age, and years of experience. Additionally, we examined characteristics of the 10,798 schools that existed over this time period, with 3,945 identified as suburban schools. The study used descriptive statistics, ANOVA, OLS regression, and logistic regression. We found that from 1990 to 2010, the percentage of White principals in suburban schools has decreased by 20 percentage points to 72%. The increase in non-White principals was shared equally between African American and Latino leaders. However, most of these gains were made in schools with increasing racial diversity. Very few principals of color were located in low-poverty, predominantly White schools. We also find a dramatic increase in the percentage of female principals, with the percentage increasing from 45% to 71%. Finally, we find that principal turnover was statistically significantly lower than schools in urban or rural settings, even after controlling for personal and school characteristics. The probability of leaving, however, was not different than schools in other locales.

(2000) in 'The study of the American school superintendency : a look at the superintendent of education in the New Millennium, ' points out that African American males are under-represented in the superintendency. Glass et al. (2000) further argues that the limited number of African American male superintendents is a reflection of discrimination, public perception of African American administrators, and the hiring practices of a school district's policy makers. This qualitative research study examined the phenomena highlighting the limited number of African American male superintendents in Texas. Specifically, this study identified the barriers and bridges faced in their ascension of African American males to the superintendency in Texas. Using a narrative inquiry research method, responses from six practicing African American male superintendents were collected and analyzed. Using in-depth interviews, narratives were transcribed to capture their perceptions. The themes that emerged relative to barriers included: 1) perception of incompetence, 2) fear of inferiority, 3) barriers embedded in the selection process, 4) fewer African American board members, 5) higher standards for African American superintendents, 6) the under-representation of African American male superintendents, and 7) a lack of mentors. Relative to the bridges that overcome these barriers, the following themes emerged: 1) credibility and competency; 2) flexibility and mobility; 3) ethics and spirituality; 4) building relationships and strong communication; and 5) increase African American membership in the board of trustees.

When schools were integrated as a result of Brown v. The Board of Education, the number of African American males in positions of educational leadership began a rapid decline. Even as the demographics of the United States have become much more diverse, the gap between African American male educational leaders and their white male counterparts remains significant. This study examines the perceptions of African American male K-12 educational leaders about their positions, why they chose to become educational leaders, and the paths they travelled in attaining those positions. The researcher will use a semi-structured interview protocol to collect data from eight African American male educational leaders from within the state of Georgia who hold, or have held the position of principal or assistant principal. The participants will be selected using a stratified purposeful sampling strategy, and come from urban, rural, and suburban districts. Each interview will be recorded and transcribed in order to accurately reflect the perceptions of each participant. The researcher will utilize the modified Van Kaam phenomological approach to analyze the perceptions and attitudes of participants collected during the interviews. Through the interview process, the researcher will be able to correlate the experiences of the participants into common themes and ideas related to the perceptions that African American males bring to the position of educational leadership. These common themes and ideas will be organized in such a manner as to provide school districts insight for providing strategies, services, or support systems that may help African American male educators move into positions of educational leadership.

Suburban school districts were defined as residential areas on the outskirts of metropolitan areas that often have higher standardized test scores and successful programs with higher rates of college attendance. The area also has higher family incomes and few African American residents. Using a phenomenological design allowed the researcher to inquire and gather data through open-ended, face-to-face, interviews with study participants. Critical Race Theory was used to frame this study. The researcher identified 10 African American male school leaders from suburban school districts located in central Alabama. These school leaders served as assistant principals, principals, and central office administrators. Data analysis revealed five emergent themes: (a) family support and influence, (b) work-family balance, (c) race and perception in school leadership, (d) mentoring and motivation, and (e) communication and relationships. Study participants spoke candidly about their challenges and successes as African American male school leaders. Additionally, study participants were humble and determined to help others reach their own unique potential. The findings of this study may help educational practitioners, educational leadership programs, and school districts examine their practices as well as African American males who may be interested in pursuing opportunities as school leaders in suburban school districts. Finally, this research study may contribute to the overall conversation of African American males in educational leadership.
