Book excerpt: Pediatric obesity is rising in epidemic proportions in the United States and the implications cause social, physical, psychosocial, and emotional burdens on the children and their families. The causes of pediatric obesity are multifaceted and the effect on the children can be profound. There is a need for intervention for these children, yet few studies have been done on the available intervention for the obese pediatric patient. Once the pediatric patient is identified as being obese through the use of the BMI, the patient can then be referred to the appropriate intervention based on the patient and families readiness for change. A literature review was conducted on identification, risk factors, and interventions for pediatric obesity. In addition, a national pediatric weight management program, SHAPEDOWN was examined. Information regarding the Transtheorhetical Model of Change, and The Health Promotion Model of Health was also reviewed. The program was developed with the Health Promotion Model as the framework. The finished product is an 8-week fitness and nutrition program for overweight children and their parents. The program will be for the families who are ready to make a commitment to a plan of care and demonstrate a readiness to make lifestyle changes. The program will be implemented in a military pediatric clinic in southwestern Ohio. At conclusion of the program, the outcomes will be compared to the SHAPEDOWN outcomes. An evaluation by the referring providers and the participants will be used to make changes to the program. If the program shows improvement in the child's weight, behaviors, activity and nutrition; the program will then be distributed to other pediatric clinics in the military.

Book excerpt: This book explores what obesity is, its causes and implications for health, and the many issues and controversies surrounding it, both in the medical community and within society as a whole. Obesity is defined as the state of having a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. Although it may be easy to identify what obesity is, however, identifying its causes and effects can be more challenging. Genetic, hormonal, environmental, and behavioral factors all play a role in defining our weight, and the consequences of obesity go far beyond medical complications, to include impacts on psychological well-being and social health, and how we think about and address this growing epidemic has become just as controversial as it is important. This second edition of Obesity offers a wealth of new information and features. Coverage of genetic and hormonal causes of obesity has been greatly expanded, as has discussion of medications and surgical techniques to manage obesity. The book reflects our expanded scientific understanding of obesity and delves into medical and societal debates about weight that have emerged in recent years. Also new in this edition is a collection of case studies, each of which helps to make the topics discussed in the book more accessible to readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on decades of scientific research and clinical experience, Safe and Effective Exercise for Overweight Youth provides a scientifically supported and clinically relevant source of information that clinical health care providers, educators, public health, and fitness professionals may use to promote physical activity in overweight and obese youth of all ages, including those with significant obesity and chronic health conditions, such as hypertension, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. It presents a best practices model for implementing clinical- and recreational-based physical activity interventions. The first five chapters offer an overview of the existing scientific literature supporting individualized, tailored exercise prescriptions for overweight and obese children with and without comorbidities. They also contain exercise instructions, illustrations, and sample lesson plans to improve cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength, power and endurance, and muscular flexibility. This information provides the basis for the recommendations provided in the subsequent chapters, which include specific guidelines for prescribing exercise to overweight children along with verbal cues or "talking points," clinical reminders, and handouts to assist health care providers. The text provides a 40-week exercise curriculum with lesson plans, discusses the importance of regular medical and self-monitoring, and offers easy tools and techniques for health care providers to track a child’s progress. Chapters also supply detailed clinical and field protocols to aid in measuring health and fitness outcomes, describe realistic expectations, and present the U.S. recommendations for promoting physical activity and fitness in youth. The final chapter summarizes current studies to support future research on physical activity for the prevention and management of pediatric obesity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's health has made tremendous strides over the past century. In general, life expectancy has increased by more than thirty years since 1900 and much of this improvement is due to the reduction of infant and early childhood mortality. Given this trajectory toward a healthier childhood, we begin the 21st-century with a shocking developmentâ€"an epidemic of obesity in children and youth. The increased number of obese children throughout the U.S. during the past 25 years has led policymakers to rank it as one of the most critical public health threats of the 21st-century. Preventing Childhood Obesity provides a broad-based examination of the nature, extent, and consequences of obesity in U.S. children and youth, including the social, environmental, medical, and dietary factors responsible for its increased prevalence. The book also offers a prevention-oriented action plan that identifies the most promising array of short-term and longer-term interventions, as well as recommendations for the roles and responsibilities of numerous stakeholders in various sectors of society to reduce its future occurrence. Preventing Childhood Obesity explores the underlying causes of this serious health problem and the actions needed to initiate, support, and sustain the societal and lifestyle changes that can reverse the trend among our children and youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experts at America's 'Hospital of the Future' provide a comprehensive approach to helping parents control their children's weight while developing a healthy, active lifestyle. Studies show that as many as one in four American children is overweight, and childhood obesity rates have doubled since the late 1970s. Medical problems that doctors once saw only in adults aged 50 or older are now striking individuals in their 20s and younger, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, joint problems, and arthritis. In this essential new book, a pediatric endocrinologist and a respected dietician present a step-by-step, medically sound, and achievable weight-control program that will benefit the whole family. Poor diet and sedentary lifestyles-as well as a lack of parental guidance-are at the root of this child obesity epidemic. Studies show that approximately 40 % of obese children will grow up to be obese adults. This book seeks to break this alarming pattern.
