Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Surprising Work of God tells the story of how America’s mid-twentieth-century spiritual awakening became a worldwide Christian movement. This seminal study brings a unique perspective to the history, personalities, and institutions of that period and offers an intimate look at evangelicalism through the window of the life, ministry, and writings of Harold John Ockenga and his long friendship with Billy Graham. Ockenga was pastor of the historic Park Street Congregational Church in Boston and cofounder of Fuller Theological Seminary, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, the National Association of Evangelicals, and Christianity Today. As such, he was a central figure in the birth and development of American neo-evangelicalism. This lively, engaging story will be of value to anyone with an interest in the American church of the last century.

Book excerpt: This work is a fresh, unusually lucid approach to Christian theology and interfaith dialogue fromÊIndia.ÊIts basic aim is to examine the Christian consciousness of God's work in history--redemption history within the entire Êhistory of the world.ÊIt uses Christian Faith by Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) as its main text, so as to view this theme in a reversed order from the way it is presented there. This approach, which centers on God's new creation in Christ, leads to an incisive understanding of Christianity's relation to other modes of faith.ÊThroughout, Dr. Kunnuthara compares the thought of another Indian Christian leader steeped in Hindu thought, Pandippedi Chenchiah (1886-1959), to enable renewed interfaith dialogue across a wide spectrum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is the place where we spend the majority of our lives— yet it is the place where God is experienced the least. Experiencing God in Your Work gives inspirational perspectives and practical ideas on how to discover God in the normal flow of your everyday work life. Compelling personal stories, anecdotes, and quotations from both classic and modern Christian thinkers, makes this biblical based guide a great choice for either personal study or group discussion. “Joe Carroll skillfully addresses the key issues every worker faces – practically, biblically and with understanding of the dilemma of work and life. His writing has the aroma of reality and the empathy of one who has lived what he writes. This is a vital book for everyone who works… ” Jerry White, PhD • Major General, USAF, Ret, International President Emeritus – The Navigators “As a workplace follower of Christ, Joe brings a unique perspective to men and women who would like to experience the joy of seeing God at work in their work but all too often fall asleep spiritually. Using both workplace and biblical examples, this study will help you awaken to and enjoy Christ’s presence in your work.” Bill Peel, DMin • Executive Director, Center for Faith & Work at LeTourneau University “This book looks at how to work effectively and wisely from a myriad of angles. It is loaded with solid practical and biblical advice. It will change the way you work, not just by answering why you work but showing how meaningful work can be.” Darrell Bock, PhD • Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies Executive Director for Cultural Engagement, Dallas Theological Seminary “I know from experience that Joe Carroll lives and writes with the same aim--to help us connect with God in our work. It is easy to see myself in the real world stories he shares. While the book provides God’s perspective on work from a Biblical perspective, almost everyone will benefit from the chapters on experiencing God’s presence in your work. For me, the chapters on living courageously and living with integrity were the most helpful in giving me perspective for my own work and for the students who ask my advice.” Michael K. Shaub, PhD • Clinical Professor of Accounting, Texas A & M University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Miller was the founder of the modern American millennial tradition. Using various dates found in scripture, he sought to calculate the chronology of Christ's return to earth. Although his prediction that Christ would visibly return in 1843 failed spectacularly, followers reinterpreted his message and laid the basis for the modern Seventh-day Adventist Church. In this book, David L. Rowe utilizes the vast collection of Miller primary materials to reconstruct Miller's life. He relies on information found in correspondence. Rowe gives special attention to the Miller family connections and to Miller's personal identity struggles, documenting a deep tension between proclivities for both obedience and rebellion.

Book excerpt: If you know God loves your work, you can—as Paul put it—“work at it with all your heart.” But too often even Christians find it hard to engage fully with what occupies them for hours every day. This book will help you relate your work to God’s eternal kingdom purposes. Here you will find not just one or two but several biblical reasons for getting up and going to work. During your lifetime you will spend, perhaps, 100,000 hours working in paid or unpaid work. Will you see spiritual significance in those hours? In the end, will they really matter? These easy-to-read chapters will help you view your daily work within a new and much larger perspective. For example, what if you were to begin seeing your work as a worship offering that God gladly receives? Or what if you were to discover how he intends to use your work to further your own spiritual growth? Get set to move from “Thank God, it’s Friday!” to “Wonderful, it’s Monday again!”

Book excerpt: Common Worship is ten years old. In this volume, Nicholas Papadopulos gathers contributions from distinguished liturgical practitioners to assess its development and reflect upon its usage in this first decade. In a series of penetrating and thought-provoking essays, ten authors consider Common Worship's emergence from earlier liturgical revisions. They examine its provisions for the Eucharist, baptism and ordination, as well as for the Service of the Word. The effective use of music and architecture is also considered, as are the training needs of worship leaders and the Church's liturgical future.

Book excerpt: “When I felt God leading me out of journalism toward missions, I reflected on the following: By evening, the newspapers we worked so hard to produce were being used to wrap garbage. We had to go back and do the whole thing again the next day. Winning a person to the Lord lasts for eternity. That contrast weighed heavily in my decision to ‘trade’ journalism for church-planting.” --Dick Buck

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ came into this world to bring God’s influence into man’s situations and circumstances, so that man may regain his God-given ability (dominion) which was once lost in the Garden of Eden. I believe the letter ’g’ in the word ‘grace’ stands for God. When you remove that letter ‘g’ then what you will have is ‘race’. Running the race of life without God can be frustrating; it is a life of hardship. Jesus therefore came to pave way for man to combine divinity with humanity in order to conquer satan and the world system. We live under grace dispensation, but not all Christians enjoy the grace of God. This book therefore teaches us the basic steps, attitudes, characters and decisions we must take in order to bring to manifestation the grace of God that is already placed upon our lives through redemption. The word of God says; “Arise, shine, for thy light is come ...” (Isaiah 60:1). The light is there, but it will not shine without an input from you, if the light must shine, then you must arise. In the same vein, grace to become all that God programmed you to become in life is upon your life, but there are some practical steps you will need to take that will automatically set grace at work in your life.
