Book excerpt: As a rare remnant of unregulated Great Plains rivers, the Powder River is a hydrologically-dynamic system with wide-ranging flows that contribute to the maintenance of the physical environment and biological community. It has been hypothesized that steady inputs of water produced in association with coal bed natural gas development could alter the hydrologic dynamics and habitat conditions to which native fishes have adapted. This is a concern as the fish assemblage of the Powder River has been considered an ecological legacy. I conducted a suite of sampling and modeling analyses in order to make predictions as to how fish habitat and species occurrences could change with alterations of summer flows. Modeled incremental increases in summer flow suggested potential habitat effects, the most substantial being instability of shallow-water habitats believed to be critical for spawning and rearing of native fishes. Modeling further suggested that a wide range in flows is necessary to sustain Powder River fishes and that alteration in summer flows may affect both habitat and fish assemblages. Additionally, sampling of small-bodied fishes suggested that factors associated with invasive fish species may also be acting upon the native Powder River fish assemblage.

Book excerpt: Ecohydraulics: An Integrated Approachprovides a research level text which highlights recent developments of this emerging and expanding field. With a focus on interdisciplinary research the text examines:- the evolution and scope of ecohydraulics interactions between hydraulics, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology and aquatic ecology the application of habitat modelling in ecohydraulic studies state of the art methodological developments and approaches detailed case studies including fish passage design and the management of environmental flow regimes research needs and the future of ecohydraulics research The contributions offer broad geographic coverage to encapsulate the wide range of approaches, case studies and methods used to conduct ecohydraulics research. The book considers a range of spatial and temporal scales of relevance and aquatic organisms ranging from algae and macrophytes to macroinvertebrates and fish. River management and restoration are also considered in detail, making this volume of direct relevance to those concerned with cutting edge research and its application for water resource management. Aimed at academics and postgraduate researchers in departments of physical geography, earth sciences, environmental science, environmental management, civil engineering, biology, zoology, botany and ecology; Ecohydraulics: An Integrated Approach will be of direct relevance to academics, researchers and professionals working in environmental research organisations, national agencies and consultancies.

Book excerpt: A comparison of sampling techniques and investigation of fish assemblage structure is greatly needed to improve management of western river systems. The objective of this thesis was to compare the efficacy of several gears (hoop nets, boat-mounted electrofishing, benthic trawls) for sampling fish assemblages of western rivers (Green River, Wyoming; Kootenai River, Idaho) and to investigate patterns of fish assemblage shifts in relation to habitat in the Kootenai River. In general, species-specific detectability varied by system and habitat, but was most influenced by gear. Electrofishing and hoop nets had the highest detection probabilities for most species, whereas detectability of most fishes was low with trawls. Transitions in fish assemblage and habitat structure were apparent among river sections in the Kootenai River. This thesis provides information that will improve sampling efficiency and our understanding of factors that structure fish assemblages and populations in coldwater rivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yellowstone River remains the longest unimpounded river in the conterminous United States. However, bank stabilization and floodplain dikes have altered its fish habitat. Therefore, I surveyed fish habitat and fish from Laurel to Sidney, Montana, to (1) quantify changes to side channels attributable to linear bank stabilization and floodplain dikes, (2) compare the habitat use of side channels to main channels by small fish during runoff and base flow, and (3) determine if bank stabilization and side channels influenced main-channel fish assemblages during base flow. Floodplain dike frequency, but not linear bank-stabilization extent, directly correlated to a net loss of side channels from the 1950s to 2001. However, side channels provided important fish habitat. Fish habitat use was similar between side and main channels during base flow, but not during runoff when catch rates in side channels were several times higher than in main channels and assemblage structure differed between side and main channels. Shallow, slow-current velocity (SSCV) habitats were slightly slower in side channels and SSCV patches were larger in side channels than in main channels during runoff, but not during base flow. These habitat differences partially explained the patterns in fish catch rates between channel types. During base flow, fish assemblages in main channels varied with bank-stabilization extent and side-channel availability in alluvial (unconfined) and bluff (confined) river bends. Bank stabilization and side channels had different and sometimes opposite influences on fish assemblage structure. Influences of bank stabilization and side channels on fish relative abundances varied depending on species and river bend geomorphology. Assemblage responses to side channels were more consistent and widespread than to bank stabilization, and more fish species associated with side channels than bank stabilization. Physical differences probably contributed to the assemblage differences between reference and stabilized river bends; stabilized alluvial pools were deeper than reference alluvial pools. The strengths of the relationships among fish assemblages, bank stabilization, and side channels were spatial scale-dependent; optimum scales ranged from less than 200 m to 3,200 m up- and down-stream, suggesting that bank stabilization and side channels influenced fish across multiple spatial scales.

Book excerpt: The distribution and abundance of the stream fishes are determined by a combination of historic, regional, and local factors. However, much of our understanding of how these factors affect stream fishes is based on taxonomic organization and not functional organization. I characterized taxonomic and functional organizations of fish assemblages from four sites along the Paluxy River across all four seasons. I used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to examine patterns of spatial and temporal variation in taxonomic and functional organization among stream-fish assemblages. The analyses indicate the structure of stream-fish assemblages changes spatially along the river and temporally among seasons mostly due to the overabundance of red shiner in the most downstream locality. Substrate, more than any other environmental variable, structured the fish-assemblages at this small scale.
