This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on prec'entations at the conference on Culture of Marine Invertebrate Animals which was held in Green port, New York in October, 1972. The conference was sponsored by the Middle Atlantic Natural Sciences Council, Inc., a non profit educational corporation, together with the Marine Science Centers of Adelphi University, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island University, Suffolk County Community College, and the Shelter Island Oyster Company. The purpose of the conference was to provide a needed ex change of knowledge among scientists of various specialties whose information would be invaluable to others confronted with similar problems, even with different marine animals. Part I considers supportive techniques -- general isolation and culture methods, problems of disease and feeding. Specific techniques employed in the culture of a wide range of invertebrate organisms is covered in Part II. We want to thank the contributors for their cooperation in preparing the manuscripts based on their conference presentations. Walter L. Smith Matoira H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected freshwater invertebrates of various trophic levels are grown at the Freshwater Institute for studying basic physiological and nutritional relationships, effects of toxic materials on morphological and physiological phenomena and effects of continued laboratory culture on population dynamics, physiology and morphology, tetrahymena vorax, helisoma trivolvis, Artemia sp., Daphnia magna, D. pulex, Hyalella azteca, Gammarus lacustris lacustris, Orconectes virilis, Chironomus tentans and Hexagenia rigida have been cultured. Procedures for culturing organisms on various nutritional bases are outlined. Techniques such as storage of partly developed eggs or over-wintering animals, artificial insemination of insect egg masses, washing procedures and production of given life phases specifically for use in toxicological studies are described. Methods for collecting and transporting organisms from the field are outlined. Specific environmental preferences, diseases and parasites and geographic distribution are described.

Book Synopsis Physiology of Fish in Intensive Culture Systems by : Gary A. Wedemeyer
Download or read book Physiology of Fish in Intensive Culture Systems written by Gary A. Wedemeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish culture in hatcheries and other aquacultural facilities is becoming much more intensive all over the world. The success of all kinds of fish rearing depends on the quality of management and this depends, in turn, on understanding the biology of fishes and the aquatic environment in which they live. This book directly addresses the relationship between the aquatic environment and the fishes. An understanding of this by the reader will result in a reduction of disease outbreaks through improved management.

Book Synopsis Squid as Experimental Animals by : W.J., Jr. Adelman
Download or read book Squid as Experimental Animals written by W.J., Jr. Adelman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The predecessor to this book was A Guide to the Laboratory Use of the Squid Loligo pealei published by the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1974. The revision of this long out of date guide, with the approval of the Marine Biological Laboratory, is an attempt to introduce students and researchers to the cephalopods and particularly the squid as an object of biological research. Therefore, we have decided to expand on its original theme, which was to present important practical aspects for using the squid as experimental animals. There are twenty two chapters instead of the original eight. The material in the original eight chapters has been completely revised. Since more than one method can be used for accomplishing a given task, some duplication of methods was considered desirable in the various chapters. Thus, the methodology can be chosen which is best suited for each reader's requirements. Each subject also contains a mini-review which can serve as an introduction to the various topics. Thus, the volume is not just a laboratory manual, but can also be used as an introduction to squid biology. The book is intended for laboratory technicians, advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and all others who want to learn the purpose, methods, and techniques of using squid as experimental animals. This is the reason why the name has been changed to its present title. Preceding the chapters is a list of many of the abbreviations, prefixes, and suffixes used in this volume.

Book Synopsis Culture of Animal Cells by : R. Ian Freshney
Download or read book Culture of Animal Cells written by R. Ian Freshney and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the sixth edition of this benchmark text, numerous advances in the field have been made – particularly in stem cells, 3D culture, scale-up, STR profiling, and culture of specialized cells. Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Applications, Seventh Edition is the updated version of this benchmark text, addressing these recent developments in the field as well as the basic skills and protocols. This eagerly awaited edition reviews the increasing diversity of the applications of cell culture and the proliferation of specialized techniques, and provides an introduction to new subtopics in mini-reviews. New features also include a new chapter on cell line authentication with a review of the major issues and appropriate protocols including DNA profiling and barcoding, as well as some new specialized protocols. Because of the continuing expansion of cell culture, and to keep the bulk of the book to a reasonable size, some specialized protocols are presented as supplementary material online. Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Applications, Seventh Edition provides the most accessible and comprehensive introduction available to the culture and experimental manipulation of animal cells. This text is an indispensable resource for those in or entering the field, including academic research scientists, clinical and biopharmaceutical researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, cell and molecular biology and genetics lab managers, trainees and technicians.
