Book Synopsis The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks, 3rd Edition by : Paul S Johnson
Download or read book The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks, 3rd Edition written by Paul S Johnson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.

Book Synopsis Regeneration of Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L.) Using Shelterwood Systems by : Dan Dey
Download or read book Regeneration of Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L.) Using Shelterwood Systems written by Dan Dey and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1996 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to review the scientific literature on red oak biology and silviculture as it pertains to the use of shelterwood systems in oak regeneration and management. Sections of the report describe oak ecophysiology and succession; growth characteristics; environmental requirements (light, water, nutrients, temperature) and response to stress (pests, competition); and oak regeneration ecology (acorn production and dispersal, seeding and germination requirements, artificial regeneration). The final section reviews oak management by shelterwood systems, including prescriptions for residual overstory, control of understory vegetation, stocking targets, and final overstory removal.

Book Synopsis Hardwood Reforestation and Restoration by : Daniel Gagnon
Download or read book Hardwood Reforestation and Restoration written by Daniel Gagnon and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardwood-dominated temperate forests (mostly in Eastern North America, Europe, North East Asia) provide valuable renewable timber and numerous ecosystem services. Many of these forests have been subjected to harvesting or conversion to agriculture, sometimes over centuries, that have greatly reduced their former extent and diversity. Natural regeneration following harvesting or during post-agricultural succession has often failed to restore these forests adequately. Past harvesting practices and the valuable timber of some species have led to a reduction in their abundance. The loss of apex predators has caused herbivore populations to increase and exert intense browsing pressure on hardwood regeneration, often preventing it. Particularly important are fruit, nut and acorn bearing species, because of their vital role in forest food webs and biodiversity. Restoring hardwood species to natural forests in which they were formerly more abundant will require a number of forest management actions (e.g., resistant hybrids, deer exclosures/protectors, enrichment planting, underplanting, etc.). Similarly, reforesting areas that were once natural forests will also require new silvicultural knowledge. Global warming trends will intensify the need for interventions to maintain the diversity and function of temperate hardwood forests, as well as for increase hardwood reforestation.

Book Synopsis Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options by : James M. Vose
Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options written by James M. Vose and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.

Book Synopsis Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems by : Helmut Lieth
Download or read book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Helmut Lieth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1914 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the tropical forests continues rapidly. We all know that this has global, ecological and economic consequences. The problem is of such magnitude that it can only be compared to warfare. The destruction of tropical forests is both detrimental to the global ecology as well as posing a serious threat to the people living in these areas. Furthermore, the overutilization of such a valuable resource poses a serious threat to the next generations. Besides the problem generated for the people in these regions, and for the earth in general, there is a moral obligation to preserve the vast biological diversity in the tropical forests. We have a commitment to all species on earth as well as man and, therefore, need to preserve as many as possible, if not all. This book discusses the problem from different angles: from forestry, ecology and nature conservation. The two main problem areas are: first the wise utilization of that portion of the forest which will be used - especially the introduction of planned forestry in such areas and second the development of a good plan for nature conservation in the tropics.
Book Synopsis Wild Urban Woodlands by : Ingo Kowarik
Download or read book Wild Urban Woodlands written by Ingo Kowarik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a first overview of the phemonemon of post-industrial urban wilderness: urban landscapes once shaped by heavy industry that are being re-colonized naturally by forests. These new types of urban woodlands are often overlooked by ecologists, foresters and planners. Individual chapters consider urban woodlands from the perspectives of ecology, environmental sociology, forestry, nature conservation and landscape architecture.
