Book Synopsis The Politics of Verification by : Nancy W. Gallagher
Download or read book The Politics of Verification written by Nancy W. Gallagher and published by . This book was released on 1999-03-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to evaluate compliance is among the most difficult questions that arise during treaty negotiations and ratification debates. Arguments over verification principles and procedures are increasingly common for accords about the environment, human rights, and economics, but they have been especially important in the arena of national security. Nancy Gallagher explains, "In a world in which states face conflicting pressures to maximize military capabilities and negotiate mutual restraints, the prospects for arms control often hinge on verification . . . In the standard American formulation, verification is the 'critical element of arms control.'" In The Politics of Verification, Gallagher explores the causes of verification controversies and the processes through which they are perpetuated or provisionally resolved. By examining nuclear test ban negotiations from the Eisenhower through the Clinton administrations, Gallagher finds that the assumptions about verification that have dominated U.S. policy shape domestic debates in ways that hinder stable agreement on significant test restrictions. She focuses on the dynamic interconnections between domestic and international politics, and analyzes the slow process of coalition building when conflicting interests and ideas create divisions both among and inside states. Gallagher concludes that the end of the Cold War has altered the arms control context without resolving basic questions about the appropriate amount and type of verification. Thus, the negotiation and ratification of major cooperative accords will continue to be shaped by verification compromises and coalitions.
Download or read book Start Your Engines written by Sam Briggs and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INCLUDES AN UPDATED CHAPTER ON THE 2020 SEASON You don't get biceps like Briggs by giving up when the going gets tough... CrossFit superstar Sam Briggs, aka 'The Engine', is a true hero in the sport, with a level of endurance unparalleled in the game. This is the story of how she got to the top, and battled with everything she had to stay there. Sam's memoir takes in the whole story, from being kicked out of ballet lessons as a child but being accepted on the boys' sports teams, to working as a firefighter in West Yorkshire for ten years, tackling dangerous and adrenaline-fueled situations on a daily basis, and to taking up CrossFit at the comparatively ancient age of 27. Sam tells of what it took to become champion a mere three years later, and after a year out with a broken patella. Despite the numerous setbacks and debilitating injuries that have plagued her in the years that followed, when most other athletes would have thrown in the towel, Sam has fought, and continues to fight, to be the very best that she can be. Start Your Engines is the story of how, with a combination of grit, training and dogged motivation, it's never too late to achieve your dreams.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban by : Eric H. Arnett
Download or read book Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban written by Eric H. Arnett and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than three decades of on-off negotiations, a CTB treaty was signed in 1996. This book describes how the CTB will affect nuclear programmes and decision-making in the nuclear weapon states, the threshold states and the non-nuclear weapon states of proliferation concern. While some states will maintain their nuclear weapon arsenals and options under the CTB - and some weapon modernization may be undertaken - the CTB will foreclose a number of technologies and will probably be signed and ratified. Further the CTB will codify a norm against nuclear modernization and strengthen the norm against nuclear proliferation in a way that reinforces other efforts to restrict nuclear activities. The book examines the significance of treaty provisions that may be intended to accommodate existing nuclear weapon stockpiles or options and how these provisions may function as modernization or proliferation loopholes. It concludes with a review of practical steps that can be taken - both unilaterally and multilaterally - to further strengthen these norms and reinforce the CTB regime.

Book Synopsis Communities in Action by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Communities in Action written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
