Book Synopsis Productivity and Performance in the Paper Industry by : Gary Bryan Magee
Download or read book Productivity and Performance in the Paper Industry written by Gary Bryan Magee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering 1997 study examines the economic development of the British paper industry between 1860 and 1914 - an era in which it is often claimed that the origins of Britain's relative economic decline are first witnessed. For paper-making, this was also a period in which an array of important new forces, including inter alia the development of new raw materials and the move to ever larger scales of production, came on the scene. Gary Bryan Magee looks at the effect of these changes and assesses how effectively the industry coped with the new pressures, drawing upon an extensive range of quantitative and archival sources from Britain, America, and other countries. Along the way, Dr Magee addresses issues central to the understanding of industrial competitiveness, such as technological change, entrepreneurship, productivity, trade policy, and industrial relations.
Book Synopsis The Rise of a Central Authority for English Education by : A. S. Bishop
Download or read book The Rise of a Central Authority for English Education written by A. S. Bishop and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1971-03-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the nineteenth-century formation, growth and structure of the central authority for education in England. The author uses a wide variety of published and unpublished material and describes the influences - religious, social, political and economic and others that moulded the authority. He considers the effect of the form of the three bodies that - originally held authority for education - the Education Department, the Science and Art Department and the Charity commission - on educational provision and progress throughout the Victorian era. In particular the author considers the impact of the machinery of government on the developing educational system. Dr Bishop discusses such questions as: to what extent was the provision and content of institutionalized education determined by essentially administrative considerations? What factors caused the fragmentation of such educational services as were then provided; and was the lack of unity of supervision at the centre the product of chance or design?
Book Synopsis England in the Eighteen Eighties by : H. M . Lynd
Download or read book England in the Eighteen Eighties written by H. M . Lynd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1945, this volume compares the theoretical panic and practical confusion of its present time to that of the eighteen-eighties and looks to it for direction and inspiration. Following the decade, the Reynolds’ Newspaper commented that "Eighteen seventy-nine is gone, and we all have reason to be thankful that it is now only a record". The decade faced challenges in agriculture, a bitter parliament, war on two continents, stagnant commerce and changing social norms. 1879 in particular was a year combining more circumstances of misfortune and depression than any within general experience at the time. Then, as in 1945, there was a new sense of being in the dark, surrounded by the unknown. H.M. Lynd hoped to gain some insight into possible directions of change from a study of this critical period.

Download or read book Boardroom Scandal written by James Taylor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should businessmen who commit fraud go to prison? This question has been asked repeatedly since 2008. It was also raised in nineteenth-century Britain when the spread of corporate capitalism created enormous new opportunities for dishonesty. Historians have presented Victorian Britain as a haven for white-collar criminals, beneficiaries of a prejudiced criminal justice system which only dealt harshly with offences by the poor. Boardroom Scandal challenges these beliefs. Based on an unparalleled sample of legal cases - many examined here for the first time - James Taylor presents a radical new interpretation of the relationship between capitalism and the law. Initially, there were no criminal sanctions against publishing false prospectuses, concealing losses in balance sheets, and even misappropriating company money. But parliament became convinced of the need to criminalize these practices to protect the culture of stock market investment on which mid-Victorian prosperity increasingly rested. Persuading judges to play along was harder, with many invoking the principle of caveat emptor to exonerate defendants. But by the end of the century, successful prosecutions of company executives were commonplace. These trials performed multiple functions: they stabilized confidence in times of crisis; they dramatized the class blindness of the law; and they were increasingly seen as essential as faith in a self-regulating economy ebbed. The criminalization of fraud, therefore, has far-reaching implications for our understanding of nineteenth-century Britain. It also has relevance today in light of the on-going economic crisis and the issues it raises regarding business ethics and the role of the state.
