Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Carter (1887-1968) wrote this book in London during World War II. It was his first book in more than a dozen years. In this book, Carter turns his attention to fundamentals. Why the planets are what they are. How the Sun differs from the Moon. How Jupiter and Mercury are interrelated. Having had his fill of aspects in terms of the planets, in this book Carter tells us of aspects in terms of signs and the elements they represent. A planet in a fire sign, in square to a planet in an earth sign, Carter says, is an obviously difficult combination: Fire consumes earth, or, earth smothers fire. On the other hand, air/water squares are much less stressful. Carter was particularly fascinated by the nativities of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, his contemporaries. Charts for both men are given. Mussolini he declares to be a "bombastic Italian dictator", but Hitler remained a puzzle. ___________________ Charles E.O. Carter, one of the leading astrologers of the 20th century, was President of the Astrological Lodge at the Theosophical Society from 1920 to 1952. He was first Principal of the Faculty of Astrological Studies, which he helped found in 1948. He edited The Astrologer's Quarterly from 1926 until 1959. Essays on the Foundations of Astrology was first published in 1947.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrology is both Science and Art. Hence only the talented can appreciate and understand it. Rightly Visnugupta declares that nobody other than a sage can master the ocean-like science of astrology. The great Varahamihira declares, No sin will creep into a place that is sanctified by the presence of a true astrologer. No person who studies and divines the course of destiny will ever be found in hell, but will reside permanently in the world of Brahman. This book brings to the fore not only the rationality of astrology but also the nature and structure of the correct knowledge that our forefathers possessed regarding the predictable influences of planets on human beings, and gives a spiritual bias to astrology. The reader is taken step by step in this work from the rudiments Viz., the distribution of constellations in the Zodiacal belt which is divided into twelve Signs, and the planetary hierarchy, through the method of calculating the ascendant and other houses of a natal chart, assessment of the strengths, influences, aspects, affliction, mutual relations etc., of the planets, to the final stage of reading the brighter and darker sides of the subject`s life, his chances of success and failure, their periods, ingress of the soul into the mortal coil and exit thereform as well as its departure to other worlds according to its karma. In this book an attempt has been made to give a good account of the science of astrology, with a view to making the reader a good and true astrologer. It also shows that astrology does not make man a fatalist, a helpless automation in the hands of a merciless Fate. It should, on the other hand, help him to take to self-exertion and self-help. This hoary lore, according to the author, is to be practised not for selfish ends, but to guide the needy and the distressed, to remove the cause of their suffering and to turn their attention towards God. Contents Preface to the First Edition, Preface to the Third Edition, 1. General Principles, 2. Planets' Characteristics, 3. Lagna and other Houses, 4. Planetary Strength, 5. Moon's States and Constellations, 6. Rectification of Birth time, 7. Span of Life, 8. Rasi Effects, 9. On Bhavas, 10. Conception and Birth, 11. Ududasas, 12. Yogas, 13. Rajayogas, 14. Issue, 15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest ages of the world’s history the subject of Astrology has excited the interest of, and exercised a great influence over, the minds of a certain order of thinking men. The science has never been universal in its acceptance, though it is safe to say that, with its countless adherents in the East and the ever-increasing number of its advocates in the West, there is no faith which has a more universal application than the belief in the influence of the heavenly bodies over the destinies of human beings. It is not possible within the limits of a small handbook such as this to adequately consider the philosophic paradox which makes of Freewill in man a “necessity in play”; but it is obvious that the concept is not altogether unscientific, seeing that it is customary to speak of the “free path of vibration” in chemical atoms while at the same time it is known that these atoms have their restricted characteristics, modes of motion, &c., and are all subject to the general laws controlling the bodies of which they form integral parts. Let it suffice that if we can trace an actual connectedness between the disposition of the heavenly bodies at the moment of a birth and the known life and character of the individual then born, and an exact correspondence between the course of events in that life with the changes occurring in the heavens subsequent to the moment of birth, we shall do well to accept the fact for what it is worth, and arrange our philosophic notions accordingly. As far back as the year B.C. 2154, we find mention of the great importance attaching to the celestial phenomena in the minds of Chinese rulers. It is recorded in the Historical Classic of China that at that time the astrologers Hi and Ho neglected their duties so that when, on the 10th of October, there was a great eclipse of the Sun at Peking between seven and nine o’clock in the morning, the people were wholly unprepared for it, and “ran about here and there in the utmost consternation.” For this offence Hi and Ho were deprived of their offices, their estates were confiscated and they were driven from the kingdom. Among the Hindus we have the classical writers Garga, Parashara, and Mihira, together with their legions of commentators. The Assyrian records are full of astrological allusions regarding the influence of planetary conjunctions and stellar positions. The Greek mythology is nothing but a vast system of cosmographical astrology, and there is no other history in it than what you may read in the constellations of the heavens and the corresponding evolution of the human race. Aristotle made it a part of his philosophy. Hipparchus, Hippocrates, Thales, Galenius, and others subscribed an intelligent belief in its principles. To Claudius Ptolemy, however, we are indebted for the first concise and scientific statement of its principles and practice, so far as Europe is concerned. He wrote the Tetrabiblos, or Four Books, and laid the foundations of a true astrological science. Julius Firmicus confirmed Ptolemy and enlarged upon his observations. The subsequent discovery of the planets Uranus and Neptune by Herschel and Adams, widened the field of research and gave to later astrologers the clue to much that hitherto had been imperfectly understood. Not that these discoveries overturned the whole system of astrology, as some have imagined and foolishly stated, or that they negatived the conclusions drawn from the observed effects of the seven anciently known bodies of the solar system, but it became possible after a lapse of time to fill in the blank spaces and to account for certain events which had not been traced to the action of any of the already known planets.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the historical age, evidenced by cave arts, ancient scriptures, popular myths, customs and study of ruins and monuments, humans have shown an intense desire to peek into the "non evident" universe. Mere acknowledgement of this fact compels us to agree that we as species have a strong intuitive agreement to the concept of existence of a parallel universe or another dimension not perceived through normal senses clouded by overindulgence and overinvestment in learning and practicing survival skills of the physical world. Whether backed by the results of a "double blind, placebo controlled, randomised studies," a hallmark of the objective modern sciences, or not, human brain is wired and tempted to believe on the faintest and the earliest sign of the existence of the so called supernatural. Quantum of Likes and views of videos on youtube tagged with "Supernatural" are a self explanatory proof of this. Authors are of the opinion that supernatural exists and flourishes only and ONLY in ignorance. More you seek, less is miraculous and supernatural around you. Astrology is one such logical way to dispel the cloud of supernatural from consciousness. Astrological sciences, developed by different civilizations and societies have many things in common. Apart from stellar positions and zodiac signs and houses, relying on objectivity has been one of the most important variables to predict accuracy of a system. Jyotish or Hindu system of Astrology, too depends upon such mathematical calculations, though many astrologers boast of an intuitive or "gut feeling" of an event in the life of someone being discussed. However, they fail to understand that such feeling can't come without a sincere hard work of years together on understanding and practicing a system. Then such intuition is not sixth sense, but a result end of background calculations done by the developed subconscious which both client and the astrologer are not aware of. The present book is attempted to present such principles and techniques to an inquisitive reader or a beginner in the field of the divine science, astrology. Although the dogma of astrology does not allow us to go beyond such principles, but I am sure, readers will be tempted to experiment with their automatic founded principles, they will develop easily after a practice of a couple of months with such established principles. Authors don't find any harm in doing so, as the real knowledge comes not only by cramming and following the fixed principles, but in experimenting with something which only comes as a subjective conclusion in a researcher's conscious mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a long time ago and few alive now remember what life was like in England in the years after World War II. Yes, the Luftwaffe and Vengeance weapons had made a fine mess in the south of the country, but during the war years the Yanks were there, millions of them, seducing the womenfolk, brawling in pubs, and, most importantly, spending their pay with local shopkeepers. May, 1945, the war ended and all the Americans left. Most went home, but a sizeable contingent set up shop in Germany, where, to the best of their ability given the local ruins, they carried on as before, seducing the womenfolk, brawling in pubs and spending their pay with the surviving shopkeepers. The Americans were joined by contingents of English, French and Soviet troops. As a result, the surprising fact, long forgotten, is that after the war, conditions in England were even worse than they were in post-Third Reich Germany. Some in Britain rued winning the war, as deprivation became their fate. In London after the war books were so scarce that used vendors had long lists of people waiting for the few books that turned up. For schools in London which taught astrology, the situation was impossible. Responding to the post WWII book shortage, Margaret Hone published this ultimate Astrology Text-Book. She was born in Birmingham, England, on October 2, 1892, at 2-13 am. Her ascendant was 27 Leo; her Sun was 9 Libra; her Moon was 13 Aquarius. Her midheaven was 15 Taurus. Of Ms Hone, James Holden wrote, English astrologer, educator, and author. She was a professional astrologer and private teacher for many years and later was Principal and Director of Studies of the Faculty of Astrological Studies 1954-1969 and Vice President of the Astrological Lodge of London. Mrs. Hone was an advocate of the Equal House system of house division. She is best known in the U.S. for her two instruction manuals. This book is dedicated to Charles E.O. Carter, 1887-1968. Carter succeeded Alan Leo as head of the Astrological Lodge (1920-1952) and was First Principal of the Faculty of Astrological Studies, which he helped found in 1948. Hone succeeded Carter at FAS. She passed away on October 14, 1969. In his Preface, while quick to praise Hone, a personal friend, Charles Carter also pointed out that this book's high price was justified, that padding has been rigorously excluded. He goes on to praise the workmanship, the carefully worded definitions, as well as the fact that the book was complete and entire in itself. Save for ephemeris and tables of houses, this one book would suffice beginning as well as advanced students for some years. In addition, Hone also includes one of the earliest modern histories of astrology, short biographies of leading astrologers past and present, astrology and public opinion (daily horoscopes in the newspapers were a recent innovation). On a more practical side, Hone gives a thorough analysis of the principal house systems of the day (Equal, Campanus, Regiomontanus, Placidus), and even mentions C.G. Jung's recently developed Depth Psychology.
