Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Notions of Geography Any text on geography would be unintelligible without il lustrations, and the illustration peculiar to geography is the map. This little book lays the foundation for the study of the map by the lessons on direction and on the elevations and depressions of the earth's surface. The forces of nature, and the various phenomena connected with the sun, moon, and stars, are all closely related to geography, and cannot be overlooked in any presentation of that subject, however simple. The lessons on the materials which supply our food, clothing, and shelter are an introduction to that larger study of geography which reveals how nature and the forces of nature have been made to render service to man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Home and Its Surroundings: A First Book of Modern Geography Necessity for other basal norrons.-home ex perience alone, however, cannot afford a complete basis for the later study of geography, because no one locality presents all the features required. From this it happens that the best books have contained some definitions and illustrations, as of mountain, river, valley, harbor, and factory, and have planned to build the later text with the ideas these gave as a foundation. Such conceptions are certainly necessary in the early part of geography; but mere definitions fail to produce vivid, accurate pictures. The average pupil who has pursued geography for a year has little notion of the great importance of soil, of what a mountain or a river really is, of the value of good trade routes, and why a vessel cannot find a harbor wherever it will cast anchor along the coast. Yet such ideas are the proper basis for the study of geography in the higher grades. The fact that they are so often wanting is proof that our geography still lacks foundation. How these needs are met. - In this first volume the attempt is made to supply this foundation by treating first such common things as soil, hills, valleys, products, animal life, people, industries, climate, and government, which are part of every child's environment; and sec ondly, other features, as mountains, rivers, lakes, and the ocean, which, though absent from many localities, are still necessary as a preparation for later study. Definitions, however, are not relied upon for giving the child this extra knowledge, but detailed descriptions and discus sions instead. This by no means involves neglect of the child's-own environment from the time the unfamiliar matter is introduced, for references to home experiences in this regard are frequently used. We believe that our plan gives a fuller guarantee of fitness for advanced study than has heretofore been furnished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Relationship TO mankind. - According to the defi nition of geography, - which treats of the relation be tween man and the earth, - a hill or a lake is worthy of mention only because it bears a relation to us, the men upon the earth; considered by itself it is not a part of geography. Therefore each chapter which takes up one of the above subjects, either closes With the bearing of the given topic upon mankind, or it deals with the human relationship throughout. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morton's Elementary Geography Geography naturally resolves itself into a description of that part of the earth's surface which is within one's field of observation and of that part which is beyond the home surroundings. The child should begin to study geography as soon as he is old enough to notice to any extent the objects about him. The instruction at first must of necessity be entirely oral. It should gradually enlarge the pupil's mental horizon and lead to conceptions of things far away. The oral work should be continued until the child is prepared to consider the earth as a unit. At this stage of progress a primary book may be placed in his hands. Each lesson, however, should be preceded by oral explanations. The language of the book should be Simple, concise, and accurate. It should begin with and constantly refer to the child's experience and environment. It Should introduce, naturally and in logical order, the various topics pertaining to the earth as a whole. It Should recognize the fact that the relation of the part to the whole is an elementary principle. When the earth is first considered part by part, the parts are with great difficulty, if ever, put into a harmonious whole. While it is true that the immense Size of the earth, its movements, and their relation to' other phenomena, are facts pertaining to a phase of geography which cannot be fully grasped by. Immature minds, yet distinct ideas of the elements which together form the world may be early imparted. It is impossible for children to study their own country intelligently as a whole, or in sections, Without this preparatory world study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colton and Fitch's Primer of Geography Geography looks like a long, hard word; but you will soon get used to it, and learn its meaning very clearly. Geography teaches us all about the Earth on which we live but in this book you will only study some of the simple facts of the science. After a while you will have larger works, which will explain more fully many things that it is desirable you should learn. You all know that Land and Water, are found on the Earth's surface Some people live in the country on farms, some have their homes in cities or towns while still others sail on the sea in ships, or ride from place to place in steamboats, sloops, etc. It is quite important that we should first learn the name and nature of those objects nearest to us, and then we shall be able to form a clearer idea of such as are beyond our sight. The solid part of the Earth's surface we call Land, and the rest is Water. Farms are land rivers, lakes, etc. Are water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tarbell: Introductory Geography The principle, what is true of the whole is true of the parts, has governed the order of presentation. The book is inductive in the earlier parts, but mainly deductive in the later. The elementary notions founded upon experience and3 observation are introduced at the beginning. These are followed by a study of the methods of representing geographical facts. When the child becomes acquainted with the geographical facts that may be known through his own experience at his home and in its vicinity, he needs to learn how these facts are represented upon maps, in order that from maps he may learn the geographical facts relating to other localities. When he can do this, he is ready to study geography from a book. At this point of his advancement the earth, represented by the globe, is presented to his view as a unity to be studied, and thereafter his study is largely a descent from the general to the particular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornell's First Steps in Geography Tms little work has been prepared at the request of numerous teachers, expressly for the use of Primary Schools. It will be found, upon examination, exceedingly simple and easy to be committed to memory. The definitions of the Natural Divisions of the Earth's Surface are as brief as possible, and they are fully illustrated by means of pictures and diagrams; the former showing the object as it appears in nature, the latter the manner of rep resenting it on a map. The definitions are also given in the form of a review. This double method is designed to assist the memory of the youthful student and enable him thoroughly to master the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Geography: On the Plan of Object Teaching The plan of this little work is such, that the subject is presented in the most simple form. It treats of general features, such as the locality and description of Continents, Countries, States, Rivers, Mountains, &c., without dwelling prematurely upon details which embarrass the learner in his first effort. The Maps are free from all meridians, parallels of latitude, and any superabundance of names; thereby giving a greater prominence to the general divisions of land and water. The plan of Object Teaching, by which the mind receives impressions through the medium of the eye, is here so combined with the Map Exercises, that a child just able to read is at once interested and instructed. These relations are traced through such broad topics as surface features, climate, products, industries, trade, states, cities, etc. Commerce. - History follows routes of trade. For this reason commerce takes a leading place in this book. Products and industries leading to commerce are given many special maps and lessons. This is clearly shown on pages 55 to 65, where cities are treated in their industrial relations. United States. - Every pupil should know the leading facts about his own country. A large part of this book is devoted to the United States. Pictures. - The pictures supplement the text and are true to nature. Nearly all were engraved from photographs. Maps - Special attention is called to the number and variety of maps, as well as to their accuracy. For example, under North America see the shaded relief map on page 40; colored relief map and zone map on page 41; political map on page 43; plant and animal maps on pages 45 and 46. The great relief map of the United States on pages 140 to 141 is photographed from a raised model. The Philippine maps on pages 117 to 121 will be of great help in following current events. Helps. - The Helps after each lesson are to guide pupils towards the leading facts, as well as to help the busy teachers. Pupils should answer questions not in the words of the book but in their own language. Teachers will be pleased to note that only in rare cases is it necessary to turn a leaf to find answers to questions. Spelling - In spelling and usage of geographic names the maps and text follow the rulings of the United States Board on Geographic Names. This book adopts the best modern usage and allows the capital letter in specific names, such as Rhine and Andes, but not in common class names, such as river and mountains, - thus, Rhine river, Andes mountains.
