Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Principles of Prose Composition There are many excellent people who think that all advice about composition is useless, - that a man has only to know his subject thoroughly, and the expression will come of itself. An English Dissenting minister recently hit upon a very simple way of making a book. He wrote letters to some hundreds Of English authors more or less recognised as competent practitioners of their art, saying that he had undertaken to give a series of lectures on composition to young men, and that he would be glad to have a few words Of advice. Writers are, as a rule, a generous race, and not un susceptible of flattery, and so many Of the eminent men answered the appeal of the ingenious applicant that he was able to make a very interesting book out Of their replies. The remarkable thing was that many of them, even some Of the most eminent, seemed to hold that the less people thought about the style Of their writing, the better they were likely to write. The primary aim has been to make the work alive - close to the real needs of the youth of the present day. Added to this constant appeal to the interests of the children is the method of presentation. A clear, logical development of units of thought, with an abundance of illustrative and drill exercises, makes the progress steady and the knowledge thus acquired usable and cumulative. Only the most important and absolutely essential units of thought have been selected for study. Some of the newer phases of thought which are more and more coming to be recognized as having a place in the study of English have been used in the series of lessons on "Community Helpers" and "Dramatizing." A helpful correlation with history, geography, science, and other related school subjects is shown in the lessons on "How Books Came to Be" and "Lessons from Nature." In brief, we aim 1. To appeal to the vital, essential interests of children. 2. To develop units of thought in clear, logical order. 3. To provide ample material for study or for written exercises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Rhetoric: Embodied in Rules, Illustrative Examples, and Progressive Course of Prose Composition To amend incorrect sentences, while of course necessary, is after all a negative thing, and the mental attitude it requires is the critical. Composition is positive, requiring the construc tive attitude on the part of the writer. It seems a pity to keep the student working exclusively at crooked English, without doing something even from the outset to foster that desire to contrive, to build, to bring to pass, which is so necessary to any fruitful literary work. For this reason, there are introduced from the beginning of the book certain problems to solve, the object being to give the student all along something creative to do. As the book progresses, the relative proportion of this con structive work is increased, while the merely critical, which was so predominating at first, becomes more and more subordinate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing English Prose In order better to understand the nature of the study of formal English composition, let us give a brief account of the medium of writing in English, and of certain general conditions that accompany the act. Many of these are common, as will appear, to writing in all languages, and also to speaking. On them all sensible study of English composi tion must be based; you cannot get away from them; and any theory of writing that tried to avoid them would be wild and useless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theories of Style: With Especial Reference to Prose Composition; Essays, Excerpts, and Translations This volume, the editor imagines, may prove serviceable to teachers of English in more than one way. From its origin - and apart from the style of the editor's translations - it may be regarded first of all as a body of literary models to be used in illustration of some good handbook on English prose composition, by classes in what is technically known as Exposition, i.e. written explanation. The editor's conception of such a volume of models arose partly from his belief - which needs no discussion here - that of the three generally recognized Forms of Prose Writing, namely, Description, Narration, and Exposition, only Exposition can be advantageously taught as a practical art by the average instructor in English to the average class; partly from his objection to certain books of "standard" selections, which professed rhetoricians have seen fit to compile for similar purposes of illustration in the classroom. In his opinion these compilations suffer from one fairly obvious defect. As a rule, they seem to lack a fundamental principle which every teacher of thinking and writing is supposed to demand of every book, and to inculcate in the mind of every pupil. They seem lacking in unity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of English Prose: A Manual of Composition and Rhetoric The teacher of Rhetoric has a double office. First, and chiefly, he must make writers; secondly, he must so exhibit the laws of his art as to promote mental discipline. In other words, he must be practical, without being a mere empiricist; he must be rational, without for an instant losing sight of skill in composition. With these views in mind, I have tried to fill what seemed to me an empty place among books on Rhetoric. None of them, I thought, aimed at practical results, without sacrificing too far the principles of the art; none of them taught these principles in their fullness, without sacrificing in part or in whole the practical side of the work. I have aimed to strike the happy medium, - to make a book that shall teach composition while it forces the student to think, and shall exhibit the principles of the art at the same time that it keeps uppermost the problem How to Write. I have adopted Dr. Shedd's words quoted on my title-page, accepting fully the doctrine that Thought is more than Style, and modifying this doctrine by only one other truth - a truth to which Dr. Shedd would doubtless equally assent - that worthy thought deserves, as it promotes, an excellent form. This, by the way, is Herbert Spencer's opinion, too. Though he extols practice, he adds, "Never with the principles of style. If in no other way, yet, as facilitating revision, a knowledge of the thing to be achieved - a clear idea of what constitutes a beauty, and what a blemish - can not fail to be of service." I have also tried to exhibit the laws of Rhetoric in their entirety, - not the laws of Style alone, but also those of Invention. However we may quibble about that word Invention in its rhetorical sense, Rhetoric does teach other laws than those of Form; and these laws must be exhibited, if the art is to be taught fully. I admit freely that, in a book whose chief aim is skill in composition, Invention will occupy a considerably less number of pages than Style; and, hence, even after saying what I have said of the superior importance of Invention [ 32], I have given by far the greater portion of my whole space to Style.
