Download or read book Tuna written by Barbara Ann Block and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Tuna are biologically fascinating, with many specializations such as endothermy (warm-bloodedness), aerobic capacity, and migratory abilities. The primary focus of this book is the physiology of tuna with respect to biomechanics, thermoregulation, and morphology. An evolutionary and phylogenetic backdrop illustrates the importance of comparative perspectives. Because of the economic importance of tuna, a secondary focus of the book is tuna aquaculture and conservation.

Download or read book The Birds World written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by MultiMedia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 1478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds are among the most extensively studied of all animal groups. Hundreds of academic journals and thousands of scientists are devoted to bird research, while amateur enthusiasts (called birdwatchers or, more commonly, birders) probably number in the millions. Birds are categorised as a biological class, Aves. The earliest known species of this class is Archaeopteryx lithographica, from the Late Jurassic period. According to the most recent consensus, Aves and a sister group, the order Crocodilia, together form a group of unnamed rank, the Archosauria. Phylogenetically, Aves is usually defined as all descendants of the most recent common ancestor of modern birds (or of a specific modern bird species like Passer domesticus), and Archaeopteryx. Modern phylogenies place birds in the dinosaur clade Theropoda. Modern birds are divided into two superorders, the Paleognathae (mostly flightless birds like ostriches), and the wildly diverse Neognathae, containing all other birds.

Download or read book Commerical Fishing written by G. Moore and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing provides food, income and employment for millions of people. However, fishing has environmental costs that threaten rare species, marine ecosystems and the sustainability of the resource. Based on the research expertise of leading scientists, Commercial Fishing: the Wider Ecological Impacts provides a lively, timely and accessible account of fishing activities and their impacts on marine habitats, biodiversity and species of conservation concern. It covers fishing methods that range from trawling in the Antarctic to fishing with dynamite in the tropics. The authors show how habitats such as the muddy sea beds of the deep sea, kelp forests and coral reefs are affected by fishing and how birds, mammals, turtles and sea snakes both suffer and benefit from fishing activities. They also look to the future, highlighting ways to make fishing gear 'environmentally friendly' and asking whether marine reserves will improve conservation.

Book Synopsis Global Environment Outlook 2000 by : United Nations Environment Programme (Unep)
Download or read book Global Environment Outlook 2000 written by United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The continued poverty of the majority of the planet's inhabitants and excessive consumption by the minority are the two major causes of environmental degradation The present course is unsustainable and postponing action is no longer an option. Inspired political leadership and intense cooperation across all regions and sectors will be needed to put both existing and new policy instruments to work. ' From the Synthesis Global Environment Outlook 2000 (GEO-2000) is a comprehensive and authoritative review and analysis of environmental conditions around the world. It is the flagship publication of the world's leading environmental organization, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and is based on information provided by more than 30 regional and international collaborating centres. The book presents a region-by-region analysis of the state of the world's environment, highlighting key global concerns and making recommendations for policy action. The regions covered include Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia and the Polar Areas. Chapter 1: Global Perspectives describes the main drivers of environmental change, such as the economy, population growth, political organization and regionalization, as well as potential impacts of recent global developments including the growth of the consumer culture, trade and international debt. Chapter 2: The State of the Environment provides a global and region-by-region overview of the environment at the end of the second millennium. The chapter covers global issues such as ozone, climate change, El Nifio and nitrogen loading, and universal issues of land and food, forests, biodiversity, freshwater, marine and coastal areas, atmosphere and urban areas. Chapter 3: Policy Responses reviews the broad range of policy instruments and responses being used to address environmental issues, including multilateral environmental agreements, and analyses the difficulties of compliance, implementation and assessment. Chapter 4: Future Perspectives looks at environmental issues that will require priority attention in the 21st century and some alternative policy options that could be used in the regions. Chapter 5: Outlook and Recommendations makes recommendations for future action based on the environmental legacy left by past and present policy and management systems. GEO-2000 will be the benchmark reference and guide to the state of the global environment. Written in clear, non-technical language and supported throughout by informative graphics and tables, it is essential reading for all those involved in environmental policy making, implementation and assessment, and for researchers and students of regional and global environmental issues. Book Synopsis Mankind and the Oceans by : Nobuyuki Miyazaki
Download or read book Mankind and the Oceans written by Nobuyuki Miyazaki and published by United Nations University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, and we are equally responsible for wise use and protection of their resources. The relationship between mankind and the oceans has been crucial since prehistoric times, but with population growth, especially in coastal zones, there is a growing threat to the marine environment from land-based activities including industrial waste and municipal sewage, as well as pollution from ships and the excessive exploitation of fish stocks. This publication examines the role and future of our oceans, drawing on evidence from regional and national case studies, and considers approaches that can help mitigate our impact on them and protect marine biodiversity.
