Beth Malone can’t believe a date request with the 1Night Stand service morphed into an arranged marriage offer. But after a heartbreaking divorce and no knight in shining armor coming to sweep her off her feet, her desire to find that knight and have a family is looking more like a dream than a reality. After filling out a 1Night Stand questionnaire worthy of the CIA, Christian Ramos is stunned when Madame Eve offers to arrange more than a date for one night: she suggests a wife! What the hell? After his best friend Jackson Castillo stops laughing, he advises him to consider the offer. Between the fortieth birthday looming on the horizon and his Latino upbringing, Chris is forced to take a hard look at his life. Reality check—time is running out for what he wants—a family and a woman to share his life. First comes love, then comes marriage isn’t part of their matrimonial situation, but neither Beth nor Christian anticipated the immediate attraction and contentment that comes with saying, “I do.”

Book excerpt: Midshipman Ariadne Jin is a USNA student with everything going for her: smarts, looks, a good attitude, and a great boyfriend. Anya Factor is an agent in an international antiterrorism organization known only as the Network, whose ability to fit in everywhere is the perfect cover for not being truly known anywhere. But when a mission goes badly, she ends up fighting for her life in the care of the one doctor in the world who knows her past while her partner is fighting the clock to track down the biggest threat in the Network's post-9/11 existence, and the lives of everyone involved converge in a way that nobody would have thought possible. The Foreword Reviews September 11, 2001, changed the United States forever. Terrorism became a much larger and more realistic fear, and many people began to look to the government for reassurance and protection. The story follows two female secret agents, Anya Factor and Charlotte Lawson. Early in the book, the two are sent to India to assassinate a member of the British parliament named Alastair Lane, who has been selling secrets to the enemy. At some point during the operation, their cover is blown and they end up fleeing the country. Anya is seriously wounded with a gunshot wound and when they reach the safety of a military hospital in DC, they run into another major snafu. The surgical intern on staff is Jeremias Geist, who was once in love with Anya Factor (albeit, when she was known by a different name). He unknowingly blows her cover by providing the hospital with her real identity, Ariadne Jin. As Ariadne fights first for her life, and then to reconcile with Jeremias, Charlotte tries to figure out who was purchasing information from Lane. Convergence is a fast-paced, well-constructed, highly-entertaining story. The author does an excellent job of weaving together many strands in a complex plot, offering the reader a little bit of everything: action, intrigue, politics, betrayal, and romance. Hesse has created a very intriguing world in The Network. The convergence is ultimately about Ariadne and Jeremias, and the reader will be completely satisfied with the conclusion of their story. 5 stars out of 5

Book excerpt: This book examines Swedenborg's spiritual experiences of Heaven and Hell from an esoteric perspective as a feeling, the language of angels and spirits. To perceive this spiritual feeling, begins the regeneration process that develops an inner perception of celestial love, as spiritual light. When we can perceive love and light as a feeling as it expresses through our physical senses, we can start to affect our own psycho-spiritual development to evolve from a sensual to a spiritual feeling of conjugial love. As we examine love and light as a spiritual feeling through heaven and hell, we too begin to experience a deeper spiritual awareness, which can initiate a personal communication with the Divine, as a Conjugial Love experience. With creative self-expression as our goal, we can take regeneration into our own hands to speed-up our own evolution, while we transmute the forces that block the spiritual feeling of the Brotherhood of Mankind, and thereby, together, manifest the feeling of Heaven on Earth.

Book excerpt: A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by longtime All Things Considered commentator and author of The Glen Rock Book of the Dead charts the trajectory of a marriage so impossible that it became inevitable. "Gritty, funny, moving, horrific, outrageous—and, above all, fearlessly honest.... ultimately a joyous story." —Newsday When Marion Winik fell in love with Tony Heubach during a wild Mardi Gras in New Orleans, her friends shook their heads. For starters, she was straight and he was gay. But Marion and Tony's impossible love turned out to be true enough to produce a marriage and two beautiful sons, true enough to weather drug addiction, sexual betrayal, and the AIDS that would kill Tony at the age of thirty-seven, twelve years after they met.

Book excerpt: With the prominence of one-name couples (Brangelina, Kimye) and famous families (the Smiths, the Beckhams), it is becoming increasingly clear that celebrity is no longer an individual pursuit-if it ever was. Accordingly, First Comes Love explores celebrity kinship and the phenomenon of the power couple: those relationships where two stars come together and where their individual identities as celebrities become inseparable from their status as a famous twosome. Taken together, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways these alliances are bound up in wider cultural debates about marriage, love, intimacy, family, parenthood, sexuality, and gender, in their particular historical contexts, from the 1920s to the present day. Interdisciplinary in scope, First Comes Love seeks to establish how celebrity relationships play particular roles in dramatizing, disrupting, and reconciling often-contradictory ideas about coupledom and kinship formations.

Book excerpt: First published in 1966, The Dangerous Sex shows how the irrational concept of the "dangerous sex" evolved and how it was – and is – used by man to maintain his dominance. He examines sexual practices and beliefs, marriage customs and rituals, and social behaviour in every society and every age from pre-historic times to the present day. The result is a revealing picture of the deep-seated male hostility that generates the way of the sexes and has fed it throughout human history. It is also a blazing indictment of this ingrained psycho-social pattern, as it unconsciously destroys and disrupts huge areas of human happiness. In this enquiry into misogyny, H. R. Hays suggests that men must face their own compulsions before a true and balanced relation between the sexes is achieved. This book therefore throws a new light on the problems of feminism, the feminine mystique and the whole controversy concerning the place of women in society, and will be of interest to students of literature, gender studies, anthropology and psychology.

Book excerpt: Scott Hahn has the rare ability to explain the essential teachings of Catholicism in a totally accessible manner. Rather than burdening the reader with difficult or arcane references and arguments, he writes of familiar feelings and situations and allows the theology to unfold naturally. In First Comes Love, Hahn turns his attention to the search for a sense of belonging, revealing the intimate connection between the families men and women create on earth and the divine family, the Holy Trinity. Delving into the Gospels, Hahn shows that family terminology--words like brother, sister, mother, father, and home--dominates Jesus' speech and the writings of His first followers, and that these very words illuminate Christianity's central ideas. As he explores the fatherhood of God, the marriage of the Church to Christ, and the all-enveloping role of the Holy Spirit, Hahn deepens readers' understanding of the sacraments, teaches them how to create a family life in the image of the Trinity, and demonstrates the ways in which the analogy of the family applies to every aspect of Catholicism and its practices--from the role of "father" embodied by the ancient patriarchs and contemporary parish priests, to the comfort and guidance offered by the brothers and sisters who comprise the Communion of Saints, to the nurturing embrace of Mary, the mother of all Christians. Through real-life examples (both humorous and compassionate) and quotations drawn from the Scriptures, Hahn makes it clear that no matter what sort of family readers come from--no matter what sort of "dysfunction" they have experienced--they can find a family in the Church. Reaching out to newcomers and to lifelong Christians alike, First Comes Love is an invitation to discover a true home in the divine.
