Sometimes, not al ways, she can make comments that lend light and feeling. Often, but not always, she can help by reading aloud. Sometimes, where necessary, she can ask questions to provoke thought and bring out the meaning. Some times she should simply tell the meaning. Always her function is to stimulate, suggest, guide, but not to obstruct the sunlight of the poet's genius; There should be much reading aloud by the pupils. Remembering that, being poetry, it is rhythmic utter-i ance, they should read it so; not singsong fashion, nor yet in the bald and unrhythmic fashion of prose. The arrangement of these selections is intended to be elastic, changing from easier to harder pieces, and back again. It is also meant to be suggestive of the likeness or the difference between one poem and another, so as to quicken thought and feeling. Let us hope that every child in our Primary and Grammar classes will find something here to please him, and that the teachers will encourage the children, first, to read only what is suited to them, and, next, to commit what they read to memory, as the best means of exercising that faculty and kindling the whole intelligence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years With the Poets; A Text-Book of Poetry: To Be Memorized by Children During the First Years in School IN recognition of the fact that there are already in existence various excellent collections of poetry for children, and that still another would therefore seem to be quite unnecessary, it is perhaps fitting that this little book should present itself with due apo logy for its existence. It might be better, however, to acknowledge frankly that this present volume does not claim to be a collection at all, in the ordinary sense of the word. Rather is it a text-book of poetry, limited in its scope by the needs and interests of the first school years, and aiming only to be an introduction to the real anthologies for children, the larger and more complete collections. It is hoped that it may serve as the first study book which a little child should be asked to use, and that as such it may correlate to advantage with the reading-books, and with the oral lessons in botany or history or geography of the lower primary grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded Poetry Reader: First and Second Years The selections for the lowest grades are addressed primarily to the feeling for verbal beauty, the recog nition of which in the mind of the child is funda mental to the plan of this work. The editors have felt that the inclusion of critical notes in these little books intended for elementary school children would be not only superfluous, but, in the degree in which critical comment drew the child's attention from the text, subversive of the desired result. N or are there any notes on methods. The best way to teach chil dren to love a poem is to read it inspiringly to them. The French say The ear is the pathway to the heart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Children's Poet To make a success of the study of Longfellow a teacher can not be too familiar with his poems. She must read and re read the simpler poems, make them so thoroughly a part of herself, that she will be a living inspiration to her pupils. If we compel pupils to learn certain facts about an author, it will not have the desired effect. We must teach them to love those of whom they are studying and it certainly is an easy matter to make them love such a character as our Longfellow. The very fact of his having loved the children so dearly, and written so extensively about them insures their interest. Let us first take them on a little imaginary trip to the city of Portland, Maine. Tell something of the city of Portland, near the sea. Do the children know what the sea is? If not, tell them. Show them the picture of Longfellow's home at Portland. Tell them of a dear, little, blue-eyed, auburn haired baby that once came to live in that home; how he grew and grew, just as babies always do; how he listened to the songs of the birds and the song of the sea, and the beautiful thoughts they whispered to him. Tell of his surroundings; the old Deering woods through which he used to wander; the old fort on the hill near his borne, from which a gun was fired every morning at sunrise. Tell of his school life; his later college life, especially emphasizing his boyish experiences and games. Teach the children to love him as a child, and later as a man and poet. Occurrences take place almost daily, which show that time with us is very uncertain the young as well as old are visited by death, and called to their everlasting home. An endless eternity is before us, into which we must all go, sooner or later. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems for Reading and Memorizing First and Second Grades: Prescribed by the New York State Education Department in the Elementary Syllabus in Langauge and Literature, 1919 Frank Dempster Sherman Daisies At evening when I go to bed I see the stars shine overhead; They are the little daisies white That dot the meadow of the Night. And often while I'm dreaming so, Across the sky the Moon will go; It is a lady, sweet and fair, Who comes to gather daisies there. For, when at morning I arise, There's not a star left in the skies; She's picked them all and dropped them down Into the meadows of the town. Flying Kite I often sit and wish that I Could be a kite up in the sky, And ride upon the breeze, and go Whatever way it chanced to blow. Then I could look beyond the town, And see the river winding down, And follow all the ships that sail Like me before the merry gale, Until at last with them I came To some place with a foreign name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature in Verse: A Poetry Reader for Children The need of a nature-poetry reader for the lower school grades has long been felt, and it was to meet this obvious want that the present volume has been compiled. It is intended to cover the first four years of school work, and the selections have been carefully graded with a view to adapting them to the varying ages and needs of those who will use the book. A division has been made into Songs of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, and under each head will be found a wide range of selections, from the simple rhymes suited to the younger readers, to more elaborate poems such as older pupils can easily read and comprehend. Rote songs, voice drills, piano accompaniments and all explanatory matter pertaining to teaching obviously belong to a teacher's book. The pupil's book is thus left not only free from matter confusing to him, but also with much more space available for his benefit. Adequacy of material for both teacher and pupil is thus secured to the greatest degree. The requirements deduced from the discussion Vocal Music in the Elementary Schools, pp. Vii to xiii, form the basis of the New Educational Music Course. In the present volume, pp. I to 58 contain rote songs and voice drills; pp. 62 to 215, all material of the First Music Reader, together with suggestions to teachers, pp. 217 to 262, an Appendix, - a collection of songs from the great composers, arranged and adapted for children. All one-part songs throughout the book have piano accompaniments. Credit is due Mr. W. C. Hoff, Director of Music in the public schools of Yonkers, New York, for the' material incorporated in the discussion of the child-voice and its development.
