Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Miscellaneous Subjects: By the Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Senior Preachers of the Ohio and North Ohio Conferences A few days, and a circular was issued to those brethren of the Ohio and North Ohio conferences who had been, for many years, in the traveling connection, requesting them to furnish each a sermon for the preposed volume. In the course of a few months, favorable responses were received from a suflicient number of brethren to insure an adequate supply of discourses. The project was, in due time, submitted to the conferences concerned, and it received their hearty approval. As every good undertaking in this wonderful planet of ours meets with Opposition, so did this. Some said, You will give offense to the younger members of the conferences whom you must pass by. Moreover, you may injure feelings, and excite opposition by the necessary rejection of some discourses which may be written for the volume. Others said, The book will not sell; the sermons of our illustrious men are rarely called for. If the logic of Wesley, the eloquence of Watson, and the learning of Clarke, cannot attract the attention of our people, can we, preachers of the wilderness, hope to compose a volume that will command a rapid sale? A third class thought that such a work as was pro posed, would, if generally circulated, do more harm than good. Our itinerant preachers, said they, at quarterly meetings, would, after returning to their lodgings, gather around the fireside, call for the Sermons, and, reading one written by a presiding elder, or sta tioned preacher of their acquaintance, subject it to the ordeal of a severe criticism, and retire to rest with no enviable feelings. The spirit of censorious criticism would pass from traveling to local preachers, from local preachers to exhorters, and from exhorters to the people, much to the prejudice of Zion. But there was an objection more formidable than this: some said, Our theology is too crude. We are not prepared to write for the instruction of those who have a literature as rich as ours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Sermons on Consecration and Kindred Themes, for the Closet, the Fireside, and the Lecture-Room That these are not elaborate-sermons, but simply suggestions toward discourses bearing some relation to the great theme of anyone can discover at a glance. That they are adapted to The Closet, for the inspiration of devotion, and to The Fireside, for family reading, because brief, pointed, and of salu tary influence, Will, I trust, also be manifest. And as they were originally, in the main, prayer-meeting talks, they Will I hope, furnish some hints for The lecture-room, at least to my junior brethren in the ministry, which will be to them, and to many others through them, of great practical advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life at Three-Score: A Sermon Delivered in the First Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, November 28, 1858 Any young man has a right to ask a man of sixty, How life seems to him now? How has the reality been as compared with the antici pation? How does the world appear now, as contrasted with the vision which rose before the mind of the boy when he sat by his father's fireside and formed in imagination his plans for future years; or when from College Halls he looked out on the world on which he was soon to enter; or when he left the place Where he had performed the duties of a clerk or appren tice to go out, cheerful or sad, to make his way in the world? Has the world been what it promised? Or are those visions all illusory and vain? What is there, as seen by a man of sixty, which is worth living for? What should be sought by those entering on the jour ney? What Should be avoided? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Well over half of young adults raised in the Church have dropped out with many having a strong anti-Church stance, many even believing the Church does more harm than good.Fr. Josh Johnson was one of these people. In Broken and Blessed he tackles the harsh realities facing the Church in the 21st century. With charity and courage he speaks to his own generation of Catholic “Millennials,” who often feel their needs and concerns are not being addressed by the Church, or who simply do not believe the Catholic Faith has any relevance to their lives. Using his own experiences, both as a former struggling young Catholic and as a priest, Fr. Josh offers an inspiring witness of how he came to know God, rather than just knowing about him—and presents practical ways for us to truly know God as well. Broken and Blessed: Addresses head-on Millennials’ most pressing issues with the Catholic Faith Presents powerful and inspiring stories from Fr. Josh’s own faith journey Shows how one can truly encounter Jesus in a personal way Offers practical insights on how to overcome habitual sins Discusses the nature of prayer, as well as the challenges to prayer and how to overcome them

Book excerpt: Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyreerupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the world's most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work "of great genius." Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontë's masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day. Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the world's most beloved novels.
