The objective is to provide appropriate features to prevent internal hazards and mitigate their effects to ensure that safety is not compromised. This Safety Guide provides recommendations to regulatory bodies, nuclear power plant designers and licensees on hazard assessment (including for combinations of hazards) and design concepts for protection against internal hazards in nuclear power plants, in order to meet the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR 2/1 (Rev. 1), Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Design. The following internal hazards are reviewed in this Safety Guide: fires, explosions, missiles, pipe breaks, flooding, collapse of structures and falling objects with a focus on heavy load drop, electromagnetic interference and release of hazardous substances originating from within the site boundary.

The requirements for fire safety are established in Safety Standards Series No. NS-R-2, Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Operation (2000). The present publication is intended for plant managers, operators, safety assessors and regulators. Recommendations are made concerning: organization and responsibilities; periodic updating of the fire hazard analysis; modifications relating to fire safety; inspection, maintenance and testing of fire safety features; records and documentation; adoption of a formal policy for fire safety; and specific responsibilities and authorities for staff in relation to fire safety.
Book Synopsis Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems by : John C. Lee
Download or read book Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems written by John C. Lee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has been developed in conjunction with NERS 462, a course offered every year to seniors and graduate students in the University of Michigan NERS program. The first half of the book covers the principles of risk analysis, the techniques used to develop and update a reliability data base, the reliability of multi-component systems, Markov methods used to analyze the unavailability of systems with repairs, fault trees and event trees used in probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), and failure modes of systems. All of this material is general enough that it could be used in non-nuclear applications, although there is an emphasis placed on the analysis of nuclear systems. The second half of the book covers the safety analysis of nuclear energy systems, an analysis of major accidents and incidents that occurred in commercial nuclear plants, applications of PRA techniques to the safety analysis of nuclear power plants (focusing on a major PRA study for five nuclear power plants), practical PRA examples, and emerging techniques in the structure of dynamic event trees and fault trees that can provide a more realistic representation of complex sequences of events. The book concludes with a discussion on passive safety features of advanced nuclear energy systems under development and approaches taken for risk-informed regulations for nuclear plants.

Download or read book Nuclear Safety written by Mark Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a 1975 fire at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama threatened the unit¿s ability to shut down safely, the Nuclear Regulatory Comm. (NRC) issued prescriptive fire safety rules for commercial nuclear units. However, nuclear units with different designs and different ages have had difficulty meeting these rules and have sought exemptions to them. In 2004, NRC began to encourage the nation¿s 104 nuclear units to transition to a less prescriptive, risk-informed approach that will analyze the fire risks of individual nuclear units. This report examines: (1) the number and causes of fire incidents at nuclear units since 1995; (2) compliance with NRC fire safety regulations; and (3) the transition to the new approach. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.

This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides specific recommendations on protection against internal and external hazards in the operation of nuclear power plants. It provides new or updated recommendations derived from enhanced understanding of operational aspects of hazards and combinations of hazards. Operating experience gained from incidents and accidents in nuclear power plants around the world has demonstrated that fire can be an important risk contributor in many Member States. However, there are other internal and external hazards that have also to be considered in the design and operation of nuclear power plants. This Safety Guide supersedes and expands the scope of lAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS- G-2. 1, Fire Safety in the Operation of Nuclear Power Plants, to include recommendations on these other hazards.
