Book excerpt: Finn has never been on a cruise ship before, much less stowed away on one. He's never impersonated a fairy tale character, sought lost treasure or gotten to know his real dad. Annual visits to family in Germany are normally highlighted by skateboarding, playing soccer with cousins, and getting spoiled by his grandparents. But all that is about to change when a mysterious foreigner hands Finn his father's diary. He and best friend Burrito embark on the pursuit of his previously unknown inheritance -- a fortune in Nazi Gold. About the author Serena Schreiber's writing career began with a vanity press publication in Brooklyn, New York (1973) of first grade student prose and poetry. Since then she has owned a web design firm, a boat charter company, and taught in a school computer lab, writing blogs and web content for each. She is a member of Florida Writers' Association. Book excerpt: Everything in which the hunter held dear is now forfeit, but his tale continues nonetheless, continuing with the role of a hunter whose sole purpose in life is to find a semblance of hope amidst the cruel world of 1797. Over the course of a year, the towns of the Fray have now grown rampant with civil unrest, inequality, crime, and mental afflictions, which have become more prominent and prevalent in the mind of the weary hunter, and of course, the white plague, which he continues to suffer from every day. On his journey, he comes across a vast array of characters, some that strengthens his resolve and others that threaten his life. Albeit, the hunter has always been a survivor, who is now fueled by a purpose that has reverted back to vengeance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late-arriving immigrants during the Great Migration, Finns were, comparatively speaking, a relatively small immigrant group, with about 350,000 immigrants arriving prior to World War II. Nevertheless, because of their geographic concentration in the Upper Midwest in particular, their impact was pronounced. They differed from many other new immigrant groups in a number of ways, including the fact that theirs is not an Indo-European language, and many old-country cultural and social features reflect their geographic location in Europe, at the juncture of East and West. A fresh and up-to-date analysis of Finnish Americans, this insightful volume lays the groundwork for exploring this unique culture through a historical context, followed by an overview of the overall composition and settlement patterns of these newcomers. The authors investigate the vivid ethnic organizations Finns created, as well as the cultural life they sought to preserve and enhance while fitting into their new homeland. Also explored are the complex dimensions of Finnish-American political and religious life, as well as the exodus of many radical leftists to Soviet Karelia in the 1930s. Through the lens of multiculturalism, transnationalism, and whiteness studies, the authors of this volume present a rich portrait of this distinctive group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Csenge Virag Zalka, a Hungarian storyteller, has collected 55 folktales from around the world about supernatural abilities like superhuman strength, invulnerability, flying, heightened senses, speed, invisibility, healing, agility, precognition, telepathy, fire manipulation, teleportation, water powers, and shifting. These tales represent powers that people have dreamed of, conjured up and strived for through the ages. Many of the powers are present in popular culture, making the superheroes who wield them the direct descendants of characters such as the princess who could see through walls or the invulnerable Isfandiyar. Zalka excluded stories about magic or about gods with divine powers, and focused on less well-known stories. She included information on similar heroes, the ability in the story, sources of the powers, the origin of the story, teachings in it, the recommended age group, sources, variants, and comments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timos done them all! To the Gemfields from the building sites, hes had some epic journeys filled with adventures that tested his strength, courage, and determination through the trials, tribulations, triumphs, and tragedies. They include a five-year sail around the world with his wife and daughter on their yacht Iceberg. In 1999, he was the first man to paddle an outrigger sea kayak from Fraser Island to Cape York Peninsula. It was a four-and-a-half month journey, pitting him against some of the worst weather conditions, not to mention the man eating sharks and saltwater crocodiles, and he survived by collecting rainwater and hunting for his food with his throwing spear. Then in 2003, he walked one-thousand-plus kilometers, pulling a trolley loaded with his supplies, from Mareeba to Cape York, the most northern point of Australia. A few years later, in 2006, he rode a pushbike 2,300 kilometers from the Gold Coast to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. With a combination of memories and daily journal entries, he captures the spirit of Australia in a very unique way. Like his Viking ancestors, Timo not only survived, but beat the odds.
