Book Synopsis First Trilogy about Sylow Theory in Locally Finite Groups by : Felix F. Flemisch
Download or read book First Trilogy about Sylow Theory in Locally Finite Groups written by Felix F. Flemisch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 (ISBN 978-3-7568-0801-4) of the Trilogy is based on the BoD-Book "Characterising locally finite groups satisfying the strong Sylow Theorem for the prime p - Revised edition" (see ISBN 978-3-7562-3416-5). The First edition of Part 1 (see ISBN 978-3-7543-6087-3) removes the highlights in light green of the Revised edition, adds 14 pages to the AGTA paper and 10 pages to the Revised edition. It includes Reference [11] resp. [10] as Appendix 1 resp. Appendix 2 and calls to mind Professor Otto H. Kegel's contribution to the conference Ischia Group Theory 2016. The Second edition introduces a uniform page numbering, adds page numbers to the appendices, improves 19 pages, adds Pages 109 to 112 and a Table of Contents. Part 2 (ISBN 978-3-7543-3642-8) of the Trilogy is based on the author's research paper "About the Strong Sylow Theorem for the Prime p in Simple Locally Finite Groups". We first give an overview of simple locally finite groups and reduce their Sylow theory for the prime p to a conjecture of Prof. Otto H. Kegel about the rank-unbounded ones of the 19 known families of finite simple groups. Part 2 introduces a new scheme to describe the 19 families, the family T of types, defines the rank of each type, and emphasises the rôle of Kegel covers. This part presents a unified picture of known results and is the reason why our title starts with "About". We then apply new ideas to prove the conjecture for the alternating groups (see Page ii). Thereupon we remember Kegel covers and *-sequences. Finally we suggest a plan how to prove the conjecture step-by-step which leads to further conjectures thereby unifying Sylow theory in locally finite simple groups with Sylow theory in locally finite and p-soluble groups. In Part 3 (ISBN 978-3-7578-6001-1) of the Trilogy we continue the program begun in [10] to optimise along the way 1) its Theorem about the first type "An" of infinite families of finite simple groups step-by-step to further types by proving it for the second type "A = PSLn". We start with proving the Conjecture 2 of [10] about the General Linear Groups by using new ideas (see Page ii), and then break down this insight to the Special Linear and the PSL Groups. We close with suggestions for future research regarding the remaining rank-unbounded types (the "Classical Groups") and the way 2), the (locally) finite and p-soluble groups, and Augustin-Louis Cauchy's and Évariste Galois' contributions to Sylow theory in finite groups.

Book Synopsis 3-Manifold Groups Are Virtually Residually $p$ by : Matthias Aschenbrenner
Download or read book 3-Manifold Groups Are Virtually Residually $p$ written by Matthias Aschenbrenner and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a prime , a group is called residually if the intersection of its -power index normal subgroups is trivial. A group is called virtually residually if it has a finite index subgroup which is residually . It is well-known that finitely generated linear groups over fields of characteristic zero are virtually residually for all but finitely many . In particular, fundamental groups of hyperbolic -manifolds are virtually residually . It is also well-known that fundamental groups of -manifolds are residually finite. In this paper the authors prove a common generalization of these results: every -manifold group is virtually residually for all but finitely many . This gives evidence for the conjecture (Thurston) that fundamental groups of -manifolds are linear groups.
Book Synopsis Self-Similar Groups by : Volodymyr Nekrashevych
Download or read book Self-Similar Groups written by Volodymyr Nekrashevych and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-similar groups (groups generated by automata) appeared initially as examples of groups that are easy to define but that enjoy exotic properties like nontrivial torsion, intermediate growth, etc. The book studies the self-similarity phenomenon in group theory and shows its intimate relation with dynamical systems and more classical self-similar structures, such as fractals, Julia sets, and self-affine tilings. The relation is established through the notions of the iterated monodromy group and the limit space, which are the central topics of the book. A wide variety of examples and different applications of self-similar groups to dynamical systems and vice versa are discussed. It is shown in particular how Julia sets can be reconstructed from the respective iterated monodromy groups and that groups with exotic properties appear now not just as isolated examples but as naturally defined iterated monodromy groups of rational functions. The book is intended to be accessible to a wide mathematical readership, including graduate students interested in group theory and dynamical systems.

Book Synopsis Character Theory and the McKay Conjecture by : Gabriel Navarro
Download or read book Character Theory and the McKay Conjecture written by Gabriel Navarro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McKay conjecture is the origin of the counting conjectures in the representation theory of finite groups. This book gives a comprehensive introduction to these conjectures, while assuming minimal background knowledge. Character theory is explored in detail along the way, from the very basics to the state of the art. This includes not only older theorems, but some brand new ones too. New, elegant proofs bring the reader up to date on progress in the field, leading to the final proof that if all finite simple groups satisfy the inductive McKay condition, then the McKay conjecture is true. Open questions are presented throughout the book, and each chapter ends with a list of problems, with varying degrees of difficulty.

Book Synopsis Groups - St Andrews 1981 by : C. M. Campbell
Download or read book Groups - St Andrews 1981 written by C. M. Campbell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-10-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers from the international conference 'Groups - St Andrews 1981', which was held at the University of St Andrews in July/August 1981. Its contents reflect the main topics of the conference: combinatorial group theory; infinite groups; general groups, finite or infinite; computational group theory. Four courses, each providing a five-lecture survey, given by J. Neubuser (Aachen), D. J. S. Robinson (Illinois), S. J. Tobin (Galway) and J. Wiengold (Cardiff), have been expanded into articles, forming the first part of the book. The second part consists of surveys and research articles written by other conference participants. More than two-thirds of the book is composed of survey articles providing a remarkably clear and up-to-date picture of those areas of group theory. The articles which comprise this book, together with their extensive bibliographies, will prove an invaluable tool to researchers in group theory, and, in addition, their detailed expositions make them very suitable for relevant postgraduate courses.
Book Synopsis Groups and Topological Dynamics by : Volodymyr Nekrashevych
Download or read book Groups and Topological Dynamics written by Volodymyr Nekrashevych and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to group-theoretic aspects of topological dynamics such as studying groups using their actions on topological spaces, using group theory to study symbolic dynamics, and other connections between group theory and dynamical systems. One of the main applications of this approach to group theory is the study of asymptotic properties of groups such as growth and amenability. The book presents recently developed techniques of studying groups of dynamical origin using the structure of their orbits and associated groupoids of germs, applications of the iterated monodromy groups to hyperbolic dynamical systems, topological full groups and their properties, amenable groups, groups of intermediate growth, and other topics. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in group theory, transformations defined by automata, topological and holomorphic dynamics, and theory of topological groupoids. Each chapter is supplemented by exercises of various levels of complexity.
