Book excerpt: A newly developed spectral compressible linear stability code (SPECLS) (staggered pressure mesh) is presented for analysis of shear flow stability, and applied to high speed boundary layers and free shear flows. The formulation utilizes the first application of a staggered mesh for a compressible flow analysis by a spectral technique. An order of magnitude less number of points is needed for equivalent accuracy of growth rates compared to those calculated by a finite difference formulation. Supersonic disturbances which are found to have oscillatory structures were resolved by a spectral multi-domain discretization, which requires a factor of three fewer points than the single domain spectral stability code. It is indicated, as expected, that stability of mixing layers is enhanced by viscosity and increasing Mach number. The mean flow involves a jet being injected into a quiescent gas. Higher temperatures of the injected gas is also found to enhance stability characteristics of the free shear layer. Macaraeg, Michele G. and Streett, Craig L. and Hussaini, M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations is based on a summer school held in Oxford in August-September 1961. The book is organized into four parts. The first three cover the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, integral equations, and partial differential equations of quasi-linear form. Most of the techniques are evaluated from the standpoints of accuracy, convergence, and stability (in the various senses of these terms) as well as ease of coding and convenience of machine computation. The last part, on practical problems, uses and develops the techniques for the treatment of problems of the greatest difficulty and complexity, which tax not only the best machines but also the best brains. This book was written for scientists who have problems to solve, and who want to know what methods exist, why and in what circumstances some are better than others, and how to adapt and develop techniques for new problems. The budding numerical analyst should also benefit from this book, and should find some topics for valuable research. The first three parts, in fact, could be used not only by practical men but also by students, though a preliminary elementary course would assist the reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its first centennial, aerospace has matured from a pioneering activity to an indispensable enabler of our daily life activities. In the next twenty to thirty years, aerospace will face a tremendous challenge - the development of flying objects that do not depend on fossil fuels. The twenty-three chapters in this book capture some of the new technologies and methods that are currently being developed to enable sustainable air transport and space flight. It clearly illustrates the multi-disciplinary character of aerospace engineering, and the fact that the challenges of air transportation and space missions continue to call for the most innovative solutions and daring concepts.

Book excerpt: This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

Book excerpt: This volume comprises the carefully revised papers of the 9th IUTAM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, held at the Imperial College, London, UK, in September 2019. The papers focus on the leading research in understanding transition to turbulence, which is a challenging topic of fluid mechanics and arises in many modern technologies as well as in nature. The proceedings are of interest for researchers in fluid mechanics and industry who have to handle these types of problems, such as in the aeronautical sector.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic stability is of fundamental importance in the mechanics of fluids and is mainly concerned with the problem of the transition to turbulence. This book is devoted to publication of original research papers, research-expository and survey articles with an emphasis on unsolved problems and open questions in the mathematical modeling and computational aspects of hydrodynamic stability. Review chapters on the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation aspects of hydrodynamic stability, the physical background, and the limitations of the modeling and simulation procedures, due to particular mathematical or computational methods used, are included. This book will be appropriate for use in research and in research-related courses on the subject. It includes chapters on bifurcations in fluid systems, flow patterns, channel flows, non-parallel shear flows, thin-film flows, strong viscous shear flows, Gortler vortices, bifurcations in convection, wavy film flows and boundary layers.
