Book Synopsis Acute and Chronic Finger Injuries in Ball Sports by : Grégoire Chick
Download or read book Acute and Chronic Finger Injuries in Ball Sports written by Grégoire Chick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected finger injuries may lead to chronic lesions that often have detrimental consequences for the practice of a ball sport, whether at a recreational level or at the top athlete level. The initial injury management is crucial. Depending on the type and the severity of the lesions, different people may get involved: the players themselves or their entourage, physiotherapists, club doctors, emergency physicians, family doctors, sports doctors or hand surgeons. Treatment is usually conservative: the long fingers require rapid mobilization to prevent stiffness and contrary to that, the thumb requires stability. Surgery may be necessary to reach these goals especially for athletes, because of the demands of their sport. Chronic lesions are also in part related to repeated trauma, requiring specialized long-term multidisciplinary treatment. They can often lead to the end of a sporting career, but also may limit the functionality of the fingers at the time of conversion. Dr Chick is Consultant Hand Surgeon in Hôpital de la Tour (Geneva) and Clinique de Genolier, Switzerland, and Visiting Surgeon in Aspetar, Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, Doha, Qatar.

Book Synopsis Authoritarian Laughter by : Neringa Klumbytė
Download or read book Authoritarian Laughter written by Neringa Klumbytė and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritarian Laughter explores the political history of the satire and humor magazine Broom published in Soviet Lithuania. Artists, writers, and journalists were required to create state-sponsored Soviet humor and serve the Communist Party after Lithuania was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940. Neringa Klumbytė investigates official attempts to shape citizens into Soviet subjects and engage them through a culture of popular humor. Broom was multidirectional—it both facilitated Communist Party agendas and expressed opposition toward the Soviet regime. Official satire and humor in Soviet Lithuania increasingly created dystopian visions of Soviet modernity and were a forum for critical ideas and nationalist sentiments that were mobilized in anti-Soviet revolutionary laughter in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Authoritarian Laughter illustrates that Soviet Western peripheries were unstable and their governance was limited. While authoritarian states engage in a statecraft of the everyday and seek to engineer intimate lives, authoritarianism is defied not only in revolutions, but in the many stories people tell each other about themselves in jokes, cartoons, and satires.

When a mysterious piece of stone comes into his possession, he and his wife believe their prayers have been answered; the stone may be a holy fragment of Jerusalem's Wailing Wall. This relic, no larger than a brick, proves to transfigure the couple's lives. They make Turk Place their home and three generations of Turk Place residents share the legacy of the Brick.
