Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential guide to tackling what students, families, and educators can do now to cut through stress and performance pressure, and find a path to purpose. Today’s college-bound kids are stressed, anxious, and navigating demands in their lives unimaginable to a previous generation. They’re performance machines, hitting the benchmarks they’re “supposed” to in order to reach the next tier of a relentless ladder. Then, their mental and physical exhaustion carries over right into first jobs. What have traditionally been considered the best years of life have become the beaten-down years of life. Belle Liang and Timothy Klein devote their careers both to counseling individual students and to cutting through the daily pressures to show a better way, a framework, and set of questions to find kids’ “true north”: what really turns them on in life, and how to harness the core qualities that reveal, allowing them to choose a course of study, a college, and a career. Even the gentlest parents and teachers tend to play into pervasive societal pressure for students to PERFORM. And when we take the foot off the gas, we beg the kids to just figure out what their PASSION is. Neither is a recipe for mental or physical health, or, ironically, for performance or passion. How to Navigate Life shows that successful human beings instead tap into their PURPOSE—the why behind the what and how. Best of all, purpose is a completely translatable quality to every aspect of life, from first jobs to last jobs and everything in between.

Book excerpt: In The Ultimate Comeback Tommy Tenney showed us how we can find restoration and healing after even the most egregious errors and from the most hopeless situations. In Tenny's new book, the pilgrimage of Ruth and Naomi to Bethlehem is the springboard for Tenney's message which teaches that many of the things that go wrong in our lives can be resolved or even avoided by adopting some very basic principles. We desperately need to downsize, reprioritize, and sometimes even sacrifice less important things in order to simplify our lives. In doing so, we become unfettered enough to see more clearly where our priorities should lie. We have the tendency to seek temporary satisfaction through a more convenient or more accommodating value system. We settle on whatever gives us permission to do what we want and to acquire what we desire. Ruth possessed the virtues of wisdom, faith, and trust; and employing these while enduring personal crisis, she realized that the very things she needed for inner strength and support were her family traditions. What we find on this journey is that these foundational tenets lead us down a path to a place of peace and contentment, to the Things that Really Matter.

Book excerpt: I don't know why nobody ever wanted me.For real, I mean. My parents died when I was eight, and I spent the next ten years hopping between foster homes. Let's just say, they barely did me any favors. Now I'm done with school, degree in hand, and... I've got nothing. No job lined up. No apartment, once the lease runs out. Nowhere to be and no one to be there with. Except... well... I do have DNA test results from a genealogy website. With close family matches. It's probably a stupid idea. A total long shot, really. ...I'm going to go and find them. This is just about loose ends.I quit calling Bennett Wood home years ago. It was more like a... home base. Living the life of a long haul trucker didn't lend itself to much settling down in one spot. And for a long time, it worked. Always on the go, looking ahead to the next shipment, the next truck stop. But honestly? I'm getting too old for this. I want to set down roots. Find a partner, someone to share lazy Saturday mornings with. I've got a plan - sell the house I inherited. Move to a larger city. Find a lover. But that was before he showed up, looking for his kin. He's too young for me, of course. It's just a fling. Just two people passing through, taking some comfort from one another. Isn't it?Finding His Way Home is the first book in the new, contemporary Benson Brothers series. Set in the small town of Bennett Wood, North Carolina, you won't want to miss out on these sweet and steamy love stories! This book, and all the books in the series, can be read as a standalone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we filter out what is irrelevant so we can focus on what we need to know. We are surrounded by a world rich with visual information, but we pay attention to very little of it, filtering out what is irrelevant so we can focus on what we think we need to know. Advertisers, web designers, and other “attention architects” try hard to get our attention, promoting products with videos on huge outdoor screens, adding flashing banners to websites, and developing computer programs with blinking icons that tempt us to click. Often they succeed in distracting us from what we are supposed to be doing. In How Attention Works, Stefan Van der Stigchel explains the process of attention and what the implications are for our everyday lives. The visual attention system is efficient, Van der Stigchel writes, because it doesn't waste energy processing every scrap of visual data it receives; it gathers only relevant information. We focus on one snippet of information and assume that everything else is stable and consistent with past experience; that's why most people miss even the most glaring continuity errors in films. If an object doesn't meet our expectations, chances are we won't see it. Van der Stigchel makes his case with examples from real life, explaining, among other things, the limitations of color perception (and why fire trucks shouldn't be red); the importance of location (security guards and radiologists, for example, have to know where to look); the attention-getting properties of faces and spiders; what we can learn from someone else's eye movements; why we see what we expect to see (magicians take advantage of this); and visual neglect and unattended information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those considering seminary, those in seminary, and those preparing to graduate from seminary need help. They need help discerning their call, moving into the bewildering world of theological study, and balancing the competing claims of school, work, and family. This book proposes to offer that help, and more, because the seminary eperience is evolving more rapidly than at any time in its history. This book is an ideal textbook for introductory seminary or spiritual formation courses that the majority of seminaries now require of first-year students. The three sections of this book provide information and guidance to those who are discerning a call to ministry and considering theological education; introduces new seminarians to thinking theologically, forming supportive relationships, integrating what they are learning in school with their spiritual lives, and practical guidance on such matters is serving a local congregation while one is in seminary; and offers advice on negotiating the ordination process in different denominational traditions and making the transition from study to full-time ministry.

Book excerpt: Start With Why has led millions of readers to rethink everything they do – in their personal lives, their careers and their organizations. Now Find Your Why picks up where Start With Why left off. It shows you how to apply Simon Sinek’s powerful insights so that you can find more inspiration at work -- and in turn inspire those around you. I believe fulfillment is a right and not a privilege. We are all entitled to wake up in the morning inspired to go to work, feel safe when we’re there and return home fulfilled at the end of the day. Achieving that fulfillment starts with understanding exactly WHY we do what we do. As Start With Why has spread around the world, countless readers have asked me the same question: How can I apply Start With Why to my career, team, company or nonprofit? Along with two of my colleagues, Peter Docker and David Mead, I created this hands-on, step-by-step guide to help you find your WHY. With detailed exercises, illustrations, and action steps for every stage of the process, Find Your Why can help you address many important concerns, including: * What if my WHY sounds just like my competitor’s? * Can I have more than one WHY? * If my work doesn’t match my WHY, what should I do? * What if my team can’t agree on our WHY? Whether you've just started your first job, are leading a team, or are CEO of your own company, the exercises in this book will help guide you on a path to long-term success and fulfillment, for both you and your colleagues. Thank you for joining us as we work together to build a world in which more people start with WHY. Inspire on! -- Simon

Conflicts are inevitable, often hard to navigate, and can quickly multiply and become unmanageable. And resolving conflict requires self-reflection, understanding, and vulnerability. But knowing how to tackle difficult conversations will strengthen relationships, create a more equitable community, and improve the impact educators have on the young children they work with. The first of its kind, Finding Your Way Through Conflict specifically focuses on conflict in early childhood education settings and gives concrete steps and strategies to help manage and resolve it productively. Authors Chris Amirault, Ph.D., and Christine M. Snyder, M.A., have decades of experience in early childhood education programs and conflict resolution. Built on their expertise and their own experiences, the book’s conflict scenarios are engaging and authentic, empowering educators to get in and out of conflict in a variety of personal, organization, and cultural contexts. Some of these scenarios include: The Discombobulated Team: The children’s artwork you posted in the classroom yesterday is gone. Who took it down—and why? The Intent/Impact Disagreement: You were only trying to help! So why is that parent offended? The Unexpected Disaster: Your team planned every aspect of that difficult parent meeting for days. So why was it such a catastrophe? A free PLC/Book Study Guide is available at freespirit.com/plc.
