Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, a comprehensive book on land conservation financing for community and regional conservation leaders. A Field Guide to Conservation Finance provides essential advice on how to tackle the universal obstacle to protecting private land in America: lack of money. Story Clark dispels the myths that conservationists can access only private funds controlled by individuals or that only large conservation organizations have clout with big capital markets. She shows how small land conservation organizations can achieve conservation goals using both traditional and cutting-edge financial strategies. Clark outlines essential tools for raising money, borrowing money, and reducing the cost of transactions. She covers a range of subjects including transfer fees, voluntary surcharges, seller financing, revolving funds, and Project Related Investment programs (PRIs). A clear, well-written overview of the basics of conservation finance with useful insights and real stories combine to create a book that is an invaluable and accessible guide for land trusts seeking to protect more land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new research on innovative financial instruments and approaches available to implement nature-based solutions (NBS) at various scales and in different contexts. Despite knowledge of the multiple benefits NBS provide, a key barrier to their wide-spread adoption is a lack of knowledge over their financing, in particular, who should pay for an NBS and how it can be financed. The book explores a variety of public, private, and blended finance models and their applicability in developing NBS across terrestrial and marine ecosystems, involving multiple stakeholders, and in jurisdictions of varying climates and income levels. Furthermore, the book provides case studies of the innovative financing of NBS with best practices identified. This book is of interest to environmental planners, resource conservation managers, policymakers, international companies and organizations, environmental NGOs, researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students interested in NBS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of significant advances in conservation and environmental protection reflects ebbs and flows of activity. Over the past 150 years, the United States has seen opportunities arise to create landmark change in conservation and environmental policy and practice every 30 to 40 years. Now, as evidence of global warming becomes ever more undeniable, the entire international community seems poised to take meaningful action to achieve economic, social, and environmental security. In January 2009, more than 100 conservationists and policy makers assembled for a four-day conference on "Conservation Capital in the Americas." Attendees included senior executives of global conservation groups that had completed deals protecting hundreds of thousands of hectares, as well as first-year college students. The focus of their conversations is the heart of this book: How do we find the financial capital-as well as the human, social, and natural capital-to steward the earth's resources for this and future generations? Where do we find the money, the talent, and the political will to do the jobs necessary to address complex threats to ecosystems that provide a spectrum of essential services that sustain life? The answers to these questions are neither simple nor uniform. Carefully crafted solutions will need to fit a dizzying array of local land ownership patterns, political contexts, and economic conditions. New approaches to conservation finance, from the art of conservation deal-making to the practice of sustainable development, are being invented and implemented around the world every day. The case analyses that form the basis of this book are organized in pairs, with a case from North America and Latin America for each of the seven topics. This book is published by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in collaboration with Island Press, the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School, and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University.

Both public and private financing is needed to ensure provision of the private and public goods and services which protected areas provide. A step-by-step process is given which protected area managers can use to create business and financial plans tailored to the needs and strengths of their protected area. Mechanisms are discussed for generating revenue flows from both public and private sources and an overview of potential grant-based sources of financing is given. It concludes with case studies demonstrating how protected area managers worldwide have developed cohesive funding strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industries that drive economic growth and support our comfortable modern lifestyles have exploited natural resources to do so. But now there's growing understanding that business can benefit from a better relationship with the environment. Leading corporations have begun to leverage nature-based remediation, restoration, and enhanced lands management to meet a variety of business needs, such as increasing employee engagement and establishing key performance indicators for reporting and disclosures. Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning offers fresh insights for corporations and environmental groups looking to create mutually beneficial partnerships that use conservation action to address business challenges and realize meaningful environmental outcomes. Recognizing the long history of mistrust between corporate action and environmental effort, Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning begins by explaining how to identify priorities that will yield a beneficial relationship between a company and nonprofit. Next, O'Gorman offers steps for creating ecologically-focused projects that address key business needs. Chapters highlight existing projects with different scales of engagement, emphasizing that headline-generating, multimillion dollar commitments are not necessarily the most effective approach. Myriad case studies featuring programs from habitat restoration to environmental educational initiatives at companies like Bridgestone USA, General Motors, and CRH Americas are included to help spark new ideas. With limited government funding available for conservation and increasing competition for grant support, corporate efforts can fill a growing need for environmental stewardship while also providing business benefits. Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning presents a comprehensive approach for effective engagement between the public and private sector, encouraging pragmatic partnerships that benefit us all.

In the absence of innovation in the field of conservation finance, a daunting funding gap faces conservationists aiming to protect America's system of landscapes that provide sustainable resources, water, wildlife habitat, and recreational amenities. Experts estimate that the average annual funding gap will be between US$1.9 billion and US$7.7 billion over the next forty years. This book brings together the experience of more than a dozen pioneering conservation finance practitioners to address this crucial issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1996 and 2002, the Trust for Public Land helped communities design and pass ballot measures that raised more than $28 billion to fund parks and open space across the country. With growth and sprawl rapidly overtaking their open lands, communities are voting in record numbers to put money aside for conservation. Voters are coming to recognize the interrelationship between conserved land, a safe environment, a strong economy, and a livable community. Well-designed finance measures that reflect the unique conservation needs and funding capacities of their communities have a much better chance of passing. Writer Kim Hopper and the Trust for Public Land's team of conservation finance experts have put together a soup-to-nuts handbook on park and conservation funding. Designed for community leaders and involved citizens, local government officials and conservation professionals, this how-to guide explains the complex process of securing federal, state, and private conservation funds and--most importantly--researching, designing, and passing a local, voter-approved conservation finance measure. This book covers a range of campaign issues, from fundraising to field organizing to legal considerations.

Book excerpt: It has become clear during recent global deliberations on biodiversity conservation that achieving Protected Area (PA) financial sustainability will require major changes in the way that PA funding is conceptualized, captured and used. With many, if not most, PAs facing funding crises, both in terms of the amount of funds available and how those are used, there is an urgent need to expand and diversify PA financial portfolios, and to ensure that funding reaches the groups and activities essential for biodiversity conservation. A range of innovative financing mechanisms have been developed and implemented to increase funding for PAs. This document aims to review and assess the status of a variety of these mechanisms, the major obstacles and opportunities for their implementation, and the potential for improvement.
