The decisive crisis response effectively stabilized the banking system, but the challenge now is to devise a credible exit strategy. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has a broad resolution toolkit, which was put to use during the crisis to resolve the intervened banks. The Nigerian authorities set up the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to purchase nonperforming loans of banks.

The exercise included macroeconomic scenario analysis and its transmission into a range of single- and multifactor shocks. The tests covered the entire Nigerian banking system and looked at the short-term horizon, in part because of data constraints. Sensitivity stress tests estimated the impact of changes in individual variables on banks’ portfolios.

This approach allows different policy options to be considered systematically in a baseline forecasting exercise. The development and calibration of this model are ongoing. The consolidation of the banking system has transformed Nigeria's financial system and created opportunities for financial institutions and market participants; but, it also poses challenges for financial stability. Efforts must therefore be stepped up to strengthen supervision and regulatory interventions.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines the role of lower oil prices in the recent deterioration in Nigeria’s macroeconomic indicators, the impact on corporate and financial sector performance. and the forward-looking aspects of promoting job-intensive growth and strengthening state and local government finances. Although the slump in oil prices contributed to sluggish growth, the lack of foreign exchange weakened corporate performance, setting the stage for nonperforming loans. Structural reforms to improve the business environment can have a positive impact on growth, while fiscal reforms would help strengthen finances of subnational governments.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 4.60, course: Banking and Finance, language: English, abstract: The objectives of this study includes to examine the effects of banking sector reforms on bank performance, savings, investments, developments of the Nigerian Banking System and Economic Growth. The banking sector is without no doubt a very essential part of the economy of a nation and any reforms carried out in it extend to other parts of the economy representing a transformational moment for the economy and its people. So it remains a nationwide challenge that the Nigerian banking sector and it's reforms haven't been able to significantly support the long-term financial needs of the real sector or facilitate the growth of the Nigerian economy The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) Test and The Phillip-Perron Test were used to test for stationarity of the variables, while the Johansen co-integration test was employed to indicate the existence of a long-run relationship among Gross Domestic Product-which acted as the Economic Growth proxy, Commercial Bank's Capital, Commercial Bank's Credit, and Number of Commercial Bank Branches which acted as the other variables. Secondary data was sourced from Commercial Bank Statistics, Central Bank Of Nigeria Bulletins, Nigeria Bureau Of Statistics, Statistical Bulletins for the period of 1998-2017. Conclusively, there was a positive and significant relationship betweenEconomic Growth and Banking Sector Reforms in the long run, but a negative relationship between Economic Growth and Financial Sector Reforms in the short-run. It was recommended that the government should ensure political and macroeconomic stability as the activities in all other sectors are affected by them, and that people are enlightened on the benefits of banking sector reforms so that they don't take opposing actions against the goal of reforms.

The purpose of the reviews is to go beyond the traditional surveillance focus on banking system soundness and solvency by analyzing in more depth the interplay between financial development, macroeconomic and financial stability, and effectiveness of macroeconomic policies in low-income countries. Senegal is a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union; a number of key macroeconomic and financial policies are designed and implemented at the union level. This study focuses on Senegal-specific issues. Another pilot study, to be prepared in the context of the next annual consultation on regional policies in early 2013, will focus on union-wide issues.

The rise of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) stands as a testament to this paradigm shift, offering the promise of efficiency, transparency, and financial inclusion. However, amidst the burgeoning interest in CBDCs, a pressing problem emerges: the lack of comprehensive understanding and insight into their development on a global scale. Recognizing this critical gap, Global Developments in Central Bank Digital Currency emerges as a guide for clarity in the complex landscape of monetary evolution. By synthesizing insights from diverse regions and jurisdictions, this book offers a holistic view of CBDC initiatives, unraveling the intricate web of motivations, challenges, and implications. From Africa to Asia, from Europe to Oceania, the book delves into country-specific developments, shedding light on the role of politics, culture, and informal institutions in shaping CBDC adoption.

Book excerpt: Pan-African banks are expanding rapidly across the continent, creating cross-border networks, and having a systemic presence in the banking sectors of many Sub-Saharan African countries. These banking groups are fostering financial development and economic integration, stimulating competition and efficiency, introducing product innovation and modern management and information systems, and bringing higher skills and expertise to host countries. At the same time, the rise of pan-African banks presents new challenges for regulators and supervisors. As networks expand, new channels for transmission of macro-financial risks and spillovers across home and host countries may emerge. To ensure that the gains from cross border banking are sustained and avoid raising financial stability risks, enhanced cross-border cooperation on regulatory and supervisory oversight is needed, in particular to support effective supervision on a consolidated basis. This paper takes stock of the development of pan-African banking groups; identifies regulatory, supervisory and resolution gaps; and suggests how the IMF can help the authorities address the related challenges.
