Book Synopsis Sustainable Finance and Financial Crime by : Michel Dion
Download or read book Sustainable Finance and Financial Crime written by Michel Dion and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable finance is a holistic approach to the sustainability development goals (SDG), so that the interdependence between environmental, social, and governance issues is unveiled. Sustainable finance takes into account the various challenges following from social change and sustainability, the evolution of capital markets, and the development of efficient risk management practices. Governance issues are an integral part of sustainable finance. However, academic literature has generally neglected to consider strategies to prevent and fight financial crimes as a crucial component of sustainable finance. The aim of this book is to focus on the interconnectedness between sustainable finance and preventing/fighting financial crime, not only as a crucial governance issue, but also as a deep challenge for social and even environmental issues. There is no really sustainable finance without developing strong and efficient means to fight financial crimes.

Download or read book Crime School: Money Laundering written by Chris Mathers and published by Mouland Media. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Chris Mathers has had one of those lives most of us cannot fathom. He is a well-known international authority on money laundering whose work has seen him operating phony businesses and laundering money for drug lords and the Mob while working undercover with the RCMP, DEA, FBI and other foreign agencies worldwide. In this updated edition Mathers proves again that he has seen it all. Humorous at times, deadly serious at others, he describes how organized criminals operate domestically and internationally, how they are able to corrupt bankers and subvert economies, and how in fact money laundering is the nexus between organized crime and terrorism. Appealing to true crime fans and those in the business/finance sector, Crime School takes us through the history of money laundering, from ancient times through the South Florida cocaine craze of the 1970s, to today's beyond sophisticated techniques employed by terrorists and organized crime, techniques that have achieved such success that the face of our world has changed dramatically. Brisk, hard hitting, entertaining and sometimes shocking and frightening, Chris Mathers takes readers on a journey that is always fascinating, and it is an underworld few have ever experienced. Truly amazing.

Book excerpt: American businessman THOMAS WILLIAM LAWSON (1857-1925) was notorious for his stock manipulations, but that was nothing to the infamy he achieved when he turned against his partners, Henry H. Rogers and William Rockefeller, in the Amalgamated Copper Mining Company. In this 1906 work-a forgotten classic of muckraking by an insider to the crimes uncovered-Lawson told all about the ruthless practices deployed to create this trust, making no bones abut his own involvement. Pulling no punches, Lawson discusses: [ "juggling with millions of the people's money" [ "bribing a legislature" [ "the magic world of finance" [ "how Wall Street's manipulations affect the country" [ and much more. As the globe reels from 21st-century financial crimes, this is a stunning reminder of lessons of old that went unheeded.

Book Synopsis Investigating White-collar Crime by : Howard E. Williams
Download or read book Investigating White-collar Crime written by Howard E. Williams and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11 chapters of this book are intended to assist police investigators in obtaining the evidence required to prove the distinctive criminal elements of embezzlement and fraud. The first chapter defines "white-collar crime" and describes types of white-collar crime under the categories of crimes by individuals, crimes in the furtherance of legitimate business, and criminal activity disguised as legitimate business. The international scope of white-collar crime and the enforcement of white-collar crime are then discussed. The second chapter focuses on the white-collar crime of embezzlement, which occurs when a person fraudulently appropriates to his/her own benefit money or property entrusted to him/her by another without the effective consent of the owner. Fraud is the subject of the third chapter. Fraud occurs when a person obtains the property of another by deception. The deception involves making representations that are knowingly false by the design of the offender, and these representations are made with the intent to defraud a targeted victim. Relying on these false representations, the victim is induced to voluntarily give his/her property to the offender. The fourth chapter, a new chapter in this second edition, addresses identity theft, its incidence and costs, and the laws that it violates. The remaining chapters focus on the practical aspects of investigating embezzlement, fraud, and identity theft. Separate chapters cover accounting theory for investigators; auditing theory for investigators; financial interviewing and interrogation; public information, subpoenas, and search warrants; evidence and documentation; proving illicit transactions; and case preparation and the investigative report. Seven appendixes pertain to the numerical system of the American Bankers Association, the affidavit of financial information, area assignments of Social Security numbers, a guide to sources for financial information, consent to search, customer consent and authorization for access to financial records, and statement of rights.
