Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report of the Bank Commissioners: January, 1851 By the summary contained in this report, it will be seen that this practice has been resumed or adopted by many of the banks, whenever the state of the money market enabled them to do so. The comparative ease of the money market, at the time of the preparation of this report, is such, that the amount of ex change now taken by the banks, whether city or country, is very much diminished from the amount charged a few months since. The uctuations in the currency are so frequent, that it is not unreasonable to anticipate the return of that state of things, when the banks, instead of being tempted to borrow money and to pay interest to induce deposits, as some of them now do, to facilitate their business and sustain their loan, may find it a difficult task to loan their money to a sufficient amount, and at a rate of interest, to enable them to pay the taxes to which they are subjected, and also to afford dividends, except of very small amount, to their stockholders. Revulsions in trade, in commerce, and manufactures, are to be expected and banks, of course, cannot remain unaffected.
