Meanwhile, better air quality and light levels improve productivity. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has us focused more than ever on indoor air quality, Healthy Buildings shows how much we have to gain from human-centered design.

Book excerpt: Filtration of aerosols is omnipresent in our daily lives, in areas as diverse as health, the protection of people and the environment, and air treatment inside buildings. However, the collection of particles within a filter media is not, contrary to popular belief, linked to a simple screen effect. The phenomena involved are much more complex and require the consideration of aerosol interactions, filter media and process conditions to select the best fiber filter for a given application. Aerosol Filtration, book for students, hygiene or process engineers, fibrous media manufacturers, designers, and filtration system suppliers or users addresses the filtration of aerosols in six chapters. These chapters cover physics and aerosol characterization, the fibrous media, and efficiency and filter clogging by solid or liquid aerosols, with special attention to the filtration of the nanoparticles. Analyses the behavior of fibrous media against solid and liquid aerosols Presents models of efficiency and pressure drop Introduces computing elements for estimating the lifetime of filters Provides guidance for designing filters and predicting their behavior over time

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granular Filtration of Aerosols and Hydrosols is concerned with the fundamental aspects of granular filtration of both liquid and gas suspensions. This book takes a unifying approach to the treatment of granular aerosol and hydrosol filtration. The text begins with the introduction of the process of granular filtration and its various applications. Subsequent chapters discuss the aspects of filtration, such as, the macroscopic description of fixed-bed granular filtration; the methods for making representations based on various porous media models for both clean and clogged filter media; the mechanisms of particle deposition; and the trajectory analysis of particle deposition. The final chapter presents and discusses case studies which deal with predicting and calculating the dynamic behavior of granular filtration of hydrosols and aerosols. Researchers in granular filtration and graduate students dealing with separation technology will find the book highly useful.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) impacts of filters in residential HVAC systems is a strong function of many HVAC system- and building-specific parameters. Furthermore, the energy consequences of filters can be important, and the magnitude and the sign of these energy impacts are system-specific as well. These system- and building-specific parameters can vary not only over different residential buildings, but also over the lifetime of a filter in a given building. A primary building-specific parameter that varies greatly over time is outdoor ventilation air change rate (ACR). ACR is not only an important particle removal mechanism, and a source of variations in filter IEQ performance, but it also is an important contributor to energy use in buildings. This work first critically reviews the existing literature on filtration and then presents an integrated evaluation of the overall IEQ and energy performance of higher efficiency residential filters. It also further develops the understanding of how ACR varies over time and how it influences filtration performance in residences. Yearlong measurement results from particle removal performance analysis of four different high efficiency filters placed in 21 residences in Toronto, Ontario showed that there was more variation in filter performance between the same filter in different homes than there was between different filters in the same home. In addition, increasing system runtime (ontime fraction) could also lead to higher particle removal impacts of filters. Study of energy consequences of the same filters in the same homes showed that fan energy consequences of high efficiency filters are negligible and because HVAC runtimes were generally low (median = 9.6%) in this sample of homes, the difference between energy consumption of different types of motor fans at typical runtimes was small (less than 10 kWh per month). Yearlong ACR measurements showed that ACR is a temporally dynamic parameter with timescales of minutes that varies considerably over long-term periods (e.g., geometric mean = 0.47/h, geometric standard deviation = 3.44 in one of the residences studied). Overall, this dissertation provides new methods and data for assessing the ventilation performance and impacts of filtration on IEQ and energy use of residential buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings are highly structured, geometric objects, primarily used in the finer study of the groups that act upon them. In Buildings and Classical Groups, the author develops the basic theory of buildings and BN-pairs, with a focus on the results needed to apply it to the representation theory of p-adic groups. In particular, he addresses spherical and affine buildings, and the "spherical building at infinity" attached to an affine building. He also covers in detail many otherwise apocryphal results. Classical matrix groups play a prominent role in this study, not only as vehicles to illustrate general results but as primary objects of interest. The author introduces and completely develops terminology and results relevant to classical groups. He also emphasizes the importance of the reflection, or Coxeter groups and develops from scratch everything about reflection groups needed for this study of buildings. In addressing the more elementary spherical constructions, the background pertaining to classical groups includes basic results about quadratic forms, alternating forms, and hermitian forms on vector spaces, plus a description of parabolic subgroups as stabilizers of flags of subspaces. The text then moves on to a detailed study of the subtler, less commonly treated affine case, where the background concerns p-adic numbers, more general discrete valuation rings, and lattices in vector spaces over ultrametric fields. Buildings and Classical Groups provides essential background material for specialists in several fields, particularly mathematicians interested in automorphic forms, representation theory, p-adic groups, number theory, algebraic groups, and Lie theory. No other available source provides such a complete and detailed treatment.
